Taxis and e-hailing vehicles allowed to cross states and districts, but only for Peninsular 01

The Transport Ministry (MOT) has clarified that taxis and e-hailing vehicles in Peninsular Malaysia are permitted to cross districts and states during the Full Movement Control Order (FMCO). This is subject to the approval of the passengers to do so.

In the statement, MOT also added that taxis and e-hailing are classified as essential services hence they are allowed to operate inter-district or interstate.

Even so, MOT requires taxi and e-hailing drivers to obtain approval letters to operate. Taxi drivers may obtain theirs from the ministry’s SMILE (Sistem Maklumat Industri Logistik) System while e-hailing drivers are issued the letter via the respective e-hailing operators.

However, this rule only applies to taxi and e-hailing drivers in Peninsular Malaysia. For drivers in Sabah and Sarawak, they will have to adhere to a different set of standard operating procedures (SOP) set by their respective governments.

This is because the government has allowed the Director-General for the states of Sabah and Sarawak to determine the best SOPs on the prevention of the Covid-19 virus spread.

The MOT notes that Sabah Covid-19 Disaster Management Committee has clarified that registered e-hailing vehicles and taxis with the requisite approvals based on the National Security Council’s (MKN) SOPs are allowed to operate in 3 districts.

The districts in question include Kota Kinabalu, Putatan, and Penampang. They are not required to apply for travel permits from the police from 23-June-2021 onwards.

This latest round of clarification came after an e-hailing driver was issued a compound for travelling across 2 district borders when transporting an essential worker.
