Thailand has begun sales of the updated Neta V, which brings with it a newer, bigger battery, and a new colour, at the same THB 549,000 (~RM 71k) price point.

The hatchback is now fitted with a newer 40.7 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery, bringing a larger capacity than the previous 38.5 kWh lithium-ion-type nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery.

Range, however, remains the same – rated 384 km on the NEDC. WLTP figures aren't available yet.

Neta Thailand's site still lists the older specs, which reads an 8-hour charging time (0% - 100% SOC) using conventional Type 2 AC charging, while DC quick charging (CCS) takes about 30 minutes to get from 30% to 80%. Though the newer battery is slightly larger in capacity, charge times aren't likely to differ too much.

Specific charging output weren't released by Neta, though we'll update this article when there's new data.

NMC vs LFP batteries

Pertinently, the switch to LFP from NMC is bound to have benefits of their own. For one is safety – LFP batteries are said to not release oxygen if its punctured/overheating, thereby hindering from catching fire. At least that is the theory.

As LFP batteries are constructed by easier-to-source materials like iron and phosphates, this also translates to lower cost of production. Studies have shown it's more stable too, which results in it having a longer lifespan than conventional batteries.

As to why the range is unchanged despite the larger capacity? It's the double-edged sword of not having nickel; without it, energy density is lower, and they need to be bigger to net the same range.
