Thailand updates 2021 Toyota Yaris and Yaris Ativ (Vios to us) with 'throttle booster' 01

Toyota Motors Thailand has introduced updated 2021 versions of its popular Toyota Yaris hatchback and Toyota Yaris Ativ (Vios to us).

The main difference besides the Thai-spec Yaris Ativ and locally sold Toyota Vios is the engine. The Yaris Ativ features a smaller 1.2-litre engine instead of a 1.5-litre to meet the country's Ecocar regulations.

In addition to aesthetic updates on the exterior and interior for both models, the 2021 model range now offers additional accessory packages which include the X-Urban package, specifically for the Yaris.

Available on both models also is the optional ‘Flash II Package’ which adds additional aesthetic bits, subtle sticker graphics and an “Active Speed” electronic control box which is claimed to increase throttle response. The package costs THB 15,700 (RM 1.9k) and THB 17,400 (RM 2.2k) for the Yaris Ativ and Yaris respectively.

The powertrain remains unchanged from the model first introduced in 2017, featuring the (3NR-FE) 1.2-litre four-cylinder with variable valve timing that delivers 92 PS and 109 Nm at 4,400rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels through a CVT-type automatic transmission.

The Yaris and Yaris Ativ are offered in three main variant choices – Entry, Sport, and Sport Premium.

Entry THB 549k (~RM 69k) THB 539k (~RM 68k)
Sport  THB 609k (~RM 76k) THB 599k (~RM 75k)
Sport Premium THB 679k (~RM 85k) THB 674k (~RM 85k)

In terms of aesthetics, the 2021 version introduces an updated gloss black front grille, redesigned fog lamp garnish, and 15-inch wheels on the Sport and Sport Premium variants.

In the case of the Yaris Ativ, the Sport and Sport Premium variants also add side and rear skirts; the Yaris on the other hand misses out on the side skirts but gets a rear spoiler instead.

On the inside, the main highlight in the Sport and Sport Premium variants is the addition revised steering wheel with soft-touch leather.

The Urban X package retails for an additional THB 44,600 (~RM 5.6k) and is designed to give the Yaris crossover-inspired looks courtesy of larger 16-inch alloy wheels, rugged body cladding, and high springs and shock absorbers for an additional ride height of 30 mm.

Toyota Thailand had previously offered a similar package on the 2017 model, dubbed the “Yaris Cross”.

What’s new, however, is the Urban X package now decks out the interior with a two-tone red/black seat upholstery and steering wheel.

Elsewhere, the armrest on the door panel and storage box in the center console are highlighted with grey stitching.

Besides the accessory packages, the facelift models also introduce optional dual-tone colours (with a black roof). The Yaris Ativ receives four new colours inclusive of a Platinum White Pearl, whereas the Yaris receives a new Gray Metallic shade.
