Base cars of the 2021 Perodua Ativa - the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize - are reportedly getting facelifts for the Japanese market come November 2021. With that, the Rocky is set to add a hybrid model to its line-up called the Rocky e:smart, according to these leaks.

New hybrid powertrain

The e:smart powertrain mates a newly-developed 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine (codenamed WA-VEX) to an electric motor. Descriptions point to it being a full-hybrid system, which means it can accelerate from standstill via electric power alone.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

Judging by the engine code, the base engine could be plucked from the Indonesian-spec Rocky. It's called the WA-VE there, and it makes 88 PS and 107 Nm of torque.

As far as this e:smart hybrid powertrain goes, there's still no word on power and fuel economy figures. However, Daihatsu says it can achieve 40% thermal efficiency.

One pedal system, EPB, improved ADAS

Meanwhile, it seems that the hybrid Rocky will gain a one-pedal system, similar to Nissan's e-Pedal. Called 'Smart Pedal' here, this allows drivers to accelerate, decelerate, and stop using just the accelerator pedal.

Higher-end variants of the facelifted Rocky also stands to gain an electric parking brake (EPB) with auto-hold function, and improvements to its ADAS suite which also extends to its adaptive cruise control (ACC) system.

Better sound insulation

Beyond those, it appears that the Rocky e:smart will be a quieter drive, thanks to better sound insulation on six points of the car: hood, engine undercarriage cover, the firewall (between dashboard and engine bay), the floor, as well as on the front and rear fenders.

Minor exterior differences

Rounding off the changes are very minor changes to its exterior.

Looking at the teaser photos, it seems that the Rocky e:smart will get a honeycomb grille design, extra badging along the sides, and blue-tinged logos.

Prices and availability

Provisional prices for the Rocky e:smart starts from JPY 2,116,000 (~RM 79,242) to JPY 2,350,000 (~RM 88,006). Of course, these are yet to be confirmed, and we'll have a better idea once the car is launched in November 2021.

While you're here...

The bit about the upcoming Rocky getting quieter might remind some of you about the issue we faced in our very own Perodua Ativa. It was a bit rattly at the back, but we're happy to report that Perodua has fixed the issue permanently for us. Watch the video above to know more!
