Dongfeng has just launched the Fearless M50 in China – a re-engineered version of the original Humvee that civilians can buy. Those keen to buy one in China will need to fork out CNY 668,800 (~RM 430k) – putting close to the starting price of a hybrid Lexus RX.
Back in 2003, Dongfeng begun manufacturing licensed versions of the Humvee, resulting in the Dongfeng Fearless (猛士, as seen on the front grille). Over the year, Dongfeng released several variations of the Fearless, including several civilian versions. The EQ2050B pictured above is a military version.
As for the just-launched Fearless M50, it gets the essence of the earlier models, but with a slightly redesigned body. Instead of a five-door body, the Fearless M50 is strictly a two-door model.
Power is derived from a 4.0-litre turbodiesel with 200 PS and 600 Nm. This engine is able to comply with China’s 6B emission regulations. The only option is a manual transmission, though the number of gear ratios were not mentioned.
Now, despite the Fearless M50 being marketed for civilians, it does not mean that it loses its rugged capabilities. Far from it, as Dongfeng said that the Fearless M50 has a water wading limit of 1.2 meters and is able to drive up to 4.5 km above sea level. It can also drive in temperatures at -35-degree Celsius to 41-degree Celsius.
Like the Hummer H1, Dongfeng mentioned that the Fearless M50 is suitable for a wide range of usage, not just military-use.
Moving forward, Dongfeng will introduce a modified Fearless M51, followed by a Fearless M20 – the latter will be a completely new model.
