The popularity of the Perodua Ativa’s donor car in Indonesia has been quite overwhelming, to say the least. Waiting periods for the Daihatsu Rocky and the Toyota Raize are said to go on for months, even as long as 9 months.
Unsurprisingly though, both the Rocky and Raize are attractive SUVs, in price, features, and looks. Prices for the Rocky start from IDR 178.9 million (~RM 52,000) but according to PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM), the most popular variant is also the most expensive.

The top-of-the-line Rocky with A.S.A. is priced from IDR 236.1 million (~RM 68,000) but accounts for around 20% of sales. ADM initially projected this variant to only account for 5% of the Rocky’s total sales.

In a recent virtual press conference held by ADM to the Indonesian media, the company revealed that most buyers of the Rocky aren’t first-time car buyers. Rather, most buyers see the popular SUV as a choice for a second car and aren’t too concerned about the price.
Interestingly, the Indonesian Rocky shares the same ADAS name as used by Perodua instead of the one used in Japan. Daihatsu’s ADAS suite is called Smart Assist in the Land of the Rising Sun.

However, the Indonesian Rocky does come with a few extra features that aren’t available on the Malaysian Ativa like a 9-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. It’s a tad better than Perodua’s SmartLink connectivity which is only available for Android phones.

Both the Indo-spec Rocky and Raize come with a choice of a turbocharged 1.0-litre 1KR-VET (98 PS/140 Nm) that is also found in the Ativa or a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre WA-VE (88 PS/113 Nm).

Both engines are paired to either a CVT automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.
With the Daihatsu Rocky being priced cheaper than its Toyota twin – Raize starts from IDR 202.7 million (~RM 59,000), it’s also unsurprising that the Rocky outsold the Raize.

According to vehicles sales data provided by GAIKINDO, Daihatsu sold 3,741 units of the Rocky in June, while 2,339 units of the Toyota Raize were sold in the same month.
