BMW ended the first half of 2022 with 1,016,228 units delivered worldwide, excluding BMW Motorrad motorcycles, MINI and Rolls-Royce.

The figure however, is down 13.7 percent from the same 6-month period last year due to shortage in semiconductor parts and additional supply chain disruptions caused by the Ukraine-Russia war, as well as China’s zero Covid policy lockdowns.

The company now has 20 models on sale, including 4 fully electric i Series models.

The following is a list of BMW’s best-selling models for the first half of 2022. However, BMW groups derivative models like the 4 Series together with their equivalent core models like the 3 Series, so a more granular insight is not possible, assuming you only want to refer to BMW’s financial report as the source.

As expected, BMW is a company that is still very much centred around the 3 Series. The company might have big ambitions for its electric i Series and demand for its X Series SUVs are growing, but the 3 Series are still the company’s bread and butter.

BMW didn’t share the sales of 3 Series but when grouped together with the 4 Series and i4, these compact premium segment models contribute 22.5 percent of the company’s sales. However, it is safe to say that the 4 Series and i4 are only minor contributors to this group, and that most of the sales are coming from the 3 Series.

Following behind the 3 is not the 5 Series, but the X3 and X4 grouping, coming in at 19.6 percent.

X Series model, including the derivative models like the iX3 but not the standalone iX, now contribute nearly half of BMW’s total sales worldwide, at 46.7 percent.

BMW says 5.7 percent of its sales are contributed by fully electric models, while plug-in hybrids contribute 10 percent. 

Curiously, the i8 was still included even though production had stopped in 2020. Presumably, these are either unsold cars or unfulfilled orders carried forward due to the parts supply shortage.
