Global sales of electric vehicles (EVs) had for the first time, exceeded the 3 million mark. From January to September 2021, cumulative sales of EVs reached 3.01 million units, according to data compiled by the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATI).
China is still the clear leader, with 1.76 million units of battery electric vehicle models sold in the first 9 months of this year. China’s lead in EVs is so big that you can add up the next 10 biggest EV selling cars and they still won’t match China.
The Chinese EV market is boosted by government subsidies while sales of combustion engine cars in major cities are capped by a monthly quota, using a lottery-based vehicle registration procedure.
Customers who failed to ‘win’ a chance to register their combustion engine car will have to try again in the following month. EVs and plug-in hybrids are exempted from this rule. Today, nearly 1 in every 10 new car sold in China is fully electric.
Following far behind in second place is USA, with 272,554 units.
Rounding up the top 5 positions are Germany (243,892 units), Britain (131,832 units), and France (114,836 units).
Ranking outside the top-5 are Norway (84,428 units) and Korea (71,006 units).
KATI’s data also puts Korea’s market share of EVs at 5.5 percent, which is still behind China’s 9.4 percent but higher than USA’s 2.3 percent.
