This 20 kg EV motor produces as much power as VW Golf R, 300 PS

British electrification specialist Equipmake has launched a 3D-printed electric motor that weighs just 20 kgs and produces approximately 300 PS, or about as much as the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder found in the Volkswagen Golf R.
Dubbed the Ampere-220 e-axle – this compact electric motor is one of the most advanced 3D-printed electric motors in the world with all power electronics, including the company’s own silicon carbide inverter, and an integrated transmission system in a compact unit that directly powers the vehicle's axle.

Extremely lightweight yet efficient and cost-effective, Ampere has a peak power of 220 kW (hence the name) and a maximum motor speed of 30,000 rpm. Weighing just under 20kg, it offers power density of 11 kW per kg – more than twice that of today’s conventional electric motors.
But that isn’t the best part, the Ampere-220 can be paired with a second motor to create a twin-motor setup that delivers 600 PS on a single axle (weighing just 85 kgs in total), or theoretically up 1,200 PS for a four-motor AWD setup.

Equipmake has designed the Ampere-220 motor as an ‘off the shelf’ motor for premium EV sportscars and draws its design and technology from the company’s EV solutions in everything from EV buses to Formula 1 cars.
