If Takumi Fujiwara from Initial D uses a particular brand of motor oil, would it be a Takumi brand? We can sense a bit groaning from those reading the first line but Takumi isn’t some special one-off brand of motor oils named after the fictional tofu delivery driver of Gunma.

Takumi is a popular male name in Japan and it also means craftsman in Japan, so perhaps that latter might be why the name was selected. Anyway, the Takumi motor oil is celebrating its 10th anniversary so it collaborated with Initial D’s creator, Shuichi Shigeno to produce a special line of motor oils.

The Legends Legacy series of motor oils consists of three types of viscosities – 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40 – each with its own distinct design featuring Fujiwara and his black-and-white AE86 on the can.

Breaking down the types available, the 5W-30 is compatible with most modern cars for urban driving while the 5W-40 is for those who prefer a more spirited driving (i.e. Ulu Yamming). Meanwhile, the 10W-40 blend is recommended for turbo cars with a displacement of 2.0-litre or more.

There are two sizes available for each viscosity, 4L or 20L, with prices that range from JPY 4,900 to 5,300 (RM 180 – 200) for the smaller size and JPY 16,900 to 18,300 (RM 630 – 690) for the larger can.

For now, these motor oils are only available in Japan but they do make a great addition to any Initial D fan. It’s just that putting one into your Toyota Yaris won’t turn you nor it into some touge master around the mountains.
