Move aside MG ZS EV, there’s a new MG electric vehicle (EV) in town and it’s called the MG Mulan. Yes, exactly after the legendary female warrioress Mulan! The electric hatchback is set to launch not just in China but in Europe and Australia as well.
Though MG unveiled its looks, other than revealing an acceleration time of under four seconds, there is still very little technical information about the car. In fact, the information that is circulating on the internet is info from homologation data from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

According to documents from Chinese MIIT, the Mulan is built on the SAIC Nebula electric platform. Measuring 4,287 x 1,836 x 1,516 mm in length, width, and height with a wheelbase of 2,705 mm, the Mulan only looks large.

In comparison, the electric hatchback is shorter than the Honda City Hatchback that is on sale in Malaysia. Most likely due to the EV’s width and height that made the Mulan look more like a crossover than a hatchback.

Other than that, documents from Chinese MIIT also revealed that the Mulan will be rear-wheel drive with a single motor that produces 204 PS. However, Chinese media believes that this will just be the power output at launch and a more powerful motor will be introduced later down the line.

Back to official information that MG has revealed, thanks to the Nebula platform the EV is built on, the Mulan scored a full 5-star rating at the Euro NCAP awards.

MG also revealed that the EV has a very low centre of gravity of 490 mm. The company also claims the Mulan has a 50:50 weight distribution ratio.

But the item that MG is most proud of is the thin battery. MG revealed that the size of the battery pack for the lowest battery capacity only measures 110 mm thick while the bigger capacity battery measures 137 mm and 140 mm.

As for width and length, the battery measures 1,300 mm and 1,690 mm. According to MG, the reason the batteries are so compact is thanks to LSB technology that arranges the cells horizontally so they’re lying flat in the battery pack.

The MG Mulan will get two battery options, a 51 kWh and a bigger 64 kWh option. The EV will have three range options: 400 km, 500 km, and 600 km.

MG China revealed that the Mulan won’t be priced higher than RMB 200,000 (~RM 131,000). This would mean that the Mulan won’t be more expensive than a Volkswagen ID.3.
