Both the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V easily dominated sales in the compact SUV/crossover category in Thailand with a combined total of 6,722 units sold in January and February 2022 according to data compiled by Autolife Thailand.
That equates to a combined market share of 56.8 percent and based on monthly sales, it’s clearly a fight to the top between the two crossovers. It was the HR-V that took the crown in January with 1,993 units sold while in February, the Corolla Cross snatched the top spot with 1,559 units.
However, in terms of overall sales so far, the Honda HR-V is the Kingdom’s best-selling compact SUV. Clearly, Thai buyers are more accepting of hybrid vehicles seeing that the HR-V is only available there with a hybrid powerplant.
Elsewhere in the sales chart, the MG ZS takes third with 1,825 units sold in the first two months and is followed by the Mazda CX-30 with 934 units sold.
Despite the major success of the Haval H6 in the larger C-segment SUV category, its smaller brother, the Haval Jolion is only the 6th best-selling B-SUV for the first couple of months of 2022.
Only 823 units were sold but this isn’t a major loss for the brand as it outsold the Nissan Kicks, Toyota C-HR, and Subaru XV. The latter only saw 17 units sold so far in 2022.
Meanwhile in Malaysia, the Corolla Cross has been quite a popular model for Toyota to the point that it is the brand’s third best-selling model, overtaking the Yaris.
Honda Malaysia has hinted at the introduction of the all-new HR-V later this year and it could be offered with the e:HEV hybrid technology as well as a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo and/or naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre i-VTEC that were recently debuted in Indonesia.
In spite of being an ageing model, the outgoing HR-V is still gaining traction among buyers. With its successor coming soon, the crossover fight will only be more intense especially with other incoming (mostly Chinese) brands also vying to get a piece of the pie including the Haval Jolion (which will be badged as the H2 here) and the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.
