- Wigo gets a more powerful 1.2-litre engine
- Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard
- Axia offers ASA 2.0 and stability control, both not available on the Wigo
This adorable Metallic Orange hatchback you see here is called the Toyota Wigo and it is a distant relative to our Perodua Axia.
The Vietnam-spec Toyota Wigo is imported (CBU) from Indonesia and it went on sale there in mid-2021. Prices start from VND 352 million (~RM 65k) for the manual variant, while the automatic variant is priced from VND 385 million (~RM 71k).

Compared to our Axia, the Wigo gets a larger inverted, pentagon-shaped lower air intake, with Toyota’s emblem sitting atop. While the Wigo also gets projector headlights like our Axia, their design varies, as the Wigo’s headlights are a bit more aggressive looking.

The Wigo’s rear-end design is also fancier than our Axia, with a pair of L-motif tail lights with additional reflectors. The bumper also gets horizontally-placed reflectors, flanked by black surrounds. Unlike our Axia, the Wigo (as well as the Agya and Ayla twins) does not get a tailgate release; to open the tailgate, you’ll need to use your key.

Stepping inside, the Wigo offers support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via its 7-inch touchscreen head unit. The Wigo also offers a digital air-conditioning system that looks similar to our Myvi, albeit with far less buttons.

Powering the Toyota Wigo is a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 87 PS and 108 Nm, delivered to the front wheels either via a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. That’s significantly more than our Axia, which does 68 PS and 91 Nm out of its smaller 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine.

Where our Axia claws back is its safety suite. Never mind the Axia’s ASA 2.0 AEB suite, the Wigo/Agya/Ayla trio lacks features as basic as stability control. Airbag count stands at two for all models.
