Toyota Yaris controls 73% of the segment, Hilux 56%, bookings for Corolla Cross still open

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has sold over 17,000 units of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia in the first three months of 2021, up 62 percent year-on-year, giving it a 12.1 percent market share.
Commenting on the achievement, President, Ravindran K, said: “During the first quarter of 2020, the market was already declining due to the pandemic. This year, it’s a different story; with the situation easing as well as the support by the government through the PENJANA program that exempts sales tax partially or fully until June 30 this year, new vehicle sales have been consistently high. In fact, for Toyota, our momentum started in December when we launched the Toyota GR Yaris and Vios GR-Sport which excited the market and set a positive note to enter 2021.”
UMWT also said that the new Toyota Vios has been well received, with over 5,600 units (including Vios GR-S) sold since its launch in December 2020.
Regular Vios
The Toyota Yaris sold less (no figures were shared) but while the Toyota Vios played second fiddle to the Honda City, the Yaris controls 73 percent of the non-national hatchback market (Q1 2021), outselling the ageing Honda Jazz by a wide margin.
The Toyota Hilux is also another major contributor to UMWT’s total sales. Again no figures were provided but the company said that the Hilux controls 56 percent of the pick-up truck segment in the first quarter of 2021.
UMWT also added that bookings for the Toyota Corolla Cross, including the entry 1.8G variant remains open, but adds that locally-assembled variants is only available for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year (first batch of 750 units of CBU model have been sold out).
