![Toyota Yaris Cross design patent registered in Indonesia but is it Indo bound? 01]()
Recently, our colleagues from our sister site, AutoFun Indonesia had discovered design patents for the Toyota Yaris Cross in the country’s Intellectual and Property Database (PDKI). However, though the design has been patented in the archipelago, it doesn’t quite mean that the crossover will enter the Indo market.

According to our esteemed Indonesian colleagues, the patent was registered in September 2020 under the Directorate of Copyright and Industrial Design. That directorate is under the purview of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.

Looking into the patent’s report in detail, it was registered by Toyota Motor Corporation themselves under its Japanese name, Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki Kaisha. Also listed on the patent were the designers of the Yaris Cross.

However, as mentioned at the beginning of the article, it is likely that the Toyota Yaris Cross might not be launched in Indonesia. Instead, these patents would only remain in black and white and could be used by Toyota to prevent other companies from using the same name in the country.

Sometimes designs and names that are patented or trademarked in the country’s respective IPO offices are not necessarily confirmation for their entry into the market. These patented names might also turn out to be a red herring in some cases to throw people off guard.

Despite the Yaris name, the Yaris Cross is based on the TNGA-B Yaris that is not available in Malaysia. The B-segment crossover made its ASEAN debut in Singapore early this year with Vietnam to follow suit.

If the Yaris Cross is indeed launched in Indonesia, it will be facing some stiff competition against the likes of the Kia Sonet and the Renault Kiger among others. Ever since the Yaris Cross was launched in April 2020, it has become a sales success with high demand in Europe and Japan.
