There is always a risk when renting out personal belongings to strangers, as the items might get damaged or stolen. It doesn’t help when companies are careless about the security measures they put in. Palm oil trader Nor Azam Budin learned this the hard way when his Toyota Alphard he placed on the popular car-sharing app Trevo was stolen.

According to The Vibes, Nor Azam listed his Toyota Alphard on Trevo as an opportunity to earn additional income.

However, on 30-June-2022, a renter appointment went awry when the renter decided to return the car personally instead of handing it over to a representative of the app, which is Trevo’s protocol.

Nor Azam told the news website that the renter had asked for an extension because he had passed the Alphard to a friend who drove it to Banting. Later, he promised to pay for an additional half day’s rent and claimed he was going to pick up the car from said friend.

Not long after, the renter ghosted Nor Azam leaving the realisation that his Toyota Alphard has been stolen.

You would think that there are security measures such as ID verification that require one to upload his MyKad number, driver’s licence, and a selfie photo of the renter in place.

However, when Nor Azam was making a police report, he discovered that the thief was wearing a pair of sunglasses in his verification photo making it difficult to identify the renter. Nor Azam also claims that the man doesn’t even look like the person on the MyKad he was holding.

Nor Azam was understandably distraught with Trevo’s poor security measures. When The Vibes contacted Trevo about the incident, Trevo representative cited that the company was shocked and disappointed as the ‘guest’ had made several prior bookings without incident.

The representative further told the news portal that the team at Trevo will work closely with the authorities and will also be conducting its own internal investigation to retrieve the vehicle.

According to the representative, the company has procedures in place to recover costs, expenses, and losses that will protect the interests of the car owner. Meanwhile, her only comment about the verification selfie was that the team is constantly working to improve its system security.

The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
