Truck driver who sideswiped another car gets rewarded with free plane tickets for honesty

They say “honesty is the best policy” and it couldn’t be truer when it comes to this incident in Singapore where a truck driver was rewarded for owing up to side-swiping another person’s car. Not only was he rewarded with plane tickets to bring his family over, but many other chain brands also joined in with dishing out rewards.

According to AsiaOne, the truck driver is believed to be of Chinese nationality and was still new to the country. The car that he side-swiped belongs to Kiss92 radio DJ Maddy Barber.

Barber told The Straits Times that she had initially decided not to press charges and absorb the cost of repairing the broken wing mirror as she was moved by the honesty and sincerity of the truck driver, Wang Yao Wen.

Instead, she launched a month-long trade-up project to exchange her broken wing mirror for prizes of increasingly higher value to reward Wang for his honesty.

The trade-up project was inspired by One Red Paperclip project, where a Canadian blogger, Kyle MacDonald, bartered his way through items of increasing value. He first started out with a paperclip and ended the project with a house as his final trade.

Barber first traded her broken wing mirror for a handmade teakwood desk set worth over $450 before more trades like a mattress worth over $1,400 to 4 luxury gaming chairs trickled in before a listener upped the ante by offering to pay for plane tickets to bring Wang’s family over to Singapore.

According to the listener, Thomas Chia, a caterer, felt that the traded items did not look like Wang would be able to put to good use. Hence why he decided to pay for the air-fair to bring Wang’s family over to Singapore for a visit instead.

But that’s not all that Wang would be receiving. Restaurant chain Putien - it’s also available here in Malaysia - if you’re wondering, have offered to treat Wang and his family to a free meal while Parkroyal Collection Pickering has offered to put up the family for a 4D3N stay for free.

The event had also caught the attention of BMW Singapore as they offered to repair Barber’s car for free.

Now, who said you won’t get rewarded for being honest? This trade-up project begs to differ.
