A report out of Indonesia has mentioned that the next-generation Toyota Agya and Daihatsu Ayla (twins to our Perodua Axia) will make a global debut as soon as March 2023.

According to a post by OtoDriver, an unnamed source told the publication, “Next year, the model change will appear, possibly in March 2023.”

Interestingly, the next-generation Toyota Agya and Daihatsu Ayla are said to receive powertrains from the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize (Perodua Ativa to us), including the turbocharged 1.0-litre 3-pot engine. If true, the next-gen Ayla and Agya would be the first of Indonesia’s Low Cost Green Car (LCGC, Indonesia’s affordable car initiative) to get a forced-induction engine.

Apart from the forced-fed mill, the other engine that could be fitted to the next-gen Ayla and Agya is the naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine.

For the Indonesian market, both engines are said to be mated to a 5-speed manual or the tried-and-tested Dual-mode CVT (D-CVT).

As with most recent Toyota and Daihatsu models, the next-gen Ayla and Agya are said to ride on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA).

What about Malaysia?

Recall that our Perodua Axia is closely related to Indonesia’s Ayla and Agya duo, so this new update could hint that the next-generation Axia is just around the corner.

Codenamed D74A, development work for the next-generation Perodua Axia is currently underway and should make a local debut around the same time, if not slightly after its Indonesian cousins.
