It would seem like Toyota/Subaru are finally giving the people what they’ve been asking for – a turbocharged engine for the 86/BRZ twin.
But don’t get too excited just yet, the photos you see here were taken during the testing phase of the biomass-derived synthetic fuel used for development and racing purposes.
Earlier this year, Toyota announced three differently fueled vehicles to enter the ENEOS Super Taikyu Series 2022 as an effort to find new options to achieve carbon neutrality. The cars are the hydrogen engine-equipped Corolla, a regular petrol-powered Toyota GR86, and this – a GR86 that runs on carbon-neutral fuel.
Under the bonnet of the carbon-neutral fuelled Toyota GR86, it’s a 1.4-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine derived from the GR Yaris’ 1.6-litre mill. No further details about the powertrain were divulged.
Carbon-neutral fuel has been attracting attention as a means of achieving carbon neutrality. The reason for this is that while carbon dioxide is emitted during combustion, the fuel itself uses carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere which results in plus/minus zero emissions.
Could this be the future of performance cars instead of the fully electrified one that we’ve been picturing? We certainly hope so, because there’s no substitute for the raw emotions a combustion engine induces.
