UMW nets 22k unit sales for Sept 2021, up 2.3x as Toyota and Perodua chases SST deadline

Both UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and UMW’s associate company, Perodua will be ramping-up production in a bid to hasten the delivery of outstanding orders and cash in on SST discounts, which will expire by 31-Dec 2021.
As businesses operations normalised, both Toyota and Perodua pulled off a stellar recovery in September 2021 clocking sales of 8,033 units and 14,160 units respectively. The UMW Group’s automotive sales totalled 22,193 units in September 2021 compared with 9,512 units sold in August.
Toyota sales more than tripled to 8,033 units in September 2021, from the 2,524 units registered in August 2021.
This brings its year-to-date September 2021 sales to 46,118 units, 23.5 percent higher than the 37,339 units registered in the corresponding period of 2020.
The Toyota Vios continues to be the marque’s best-selling model for September 2021, followed by Hilux and Yaris.
Perodua registered sales of 14,160 units in September 2021, more than doubled the 6,988 units sold in August 2021. With the gradual resumption of the automotive supply chain, Perodua will continue its efforts to ramp up production to meet its customers’ demand.
For the first nine months of the year, Perodua delivered a total of 119,093 units, 17.9 percent lower than the 145,012 units registered in the corresponding period of 2020, mainly due to FMCO and partly the semiconductor chips shortage.
Perodua Myvi production was affected by semiconductor chip shortages.
Perodua has since managed to secure sufficient semiconductor chips to ensure uninterrupted production for the remainder of the year.
UMW Holdings Berhad’s President and Group CEO, Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said, “The demand for both UMWT and Perodua products and services remains strong, as evident from the healthy level of outstanding orders. The Group expects the automotive sales momentum to peak in the last quarter of the year, supported by the year-end promotions and the sales tax exemption,”
He added, “We are also hopeful that the sales tax exemption will be extended beyond 31 December 2021 to hasten the recovery of the automotive industry. We are thankful to our customers for their continuous support of our products and services, despite the challenges.”
