It’s no secret that Honda is in the midst of electrifying their ever-growing line-up. The most recent model to get the electrification treatment is the 2022 Honda Civic e:HEV, which made its global debut in Thailand recently.
For Thailand, Honda is offering two variants of the Civic e:HEV: e:HEV EL+ and e:HEV RS. The latter replaces the turbocharged Civic RS in the Kingdom.
Prices of the electrified Civic e:HEV start from THB 1,129,000 (~RM 140k) for the EL+ variant and tops out at THB 1,259,000 (~RM 156k) for the RS variant.
The Civic e:HEV in Thailand is backed by a 3-year/100,000 km warranty, while there’s an additiona;l 10-year warranty for the battery and 5-year unlimited mileage warranty for the hybrid system.
Unlike its smaller electrified i-MMD siblings like the City, City Hatchback, and HR-V and their 1.5-litre engine, the Civic gets a larger 2.0-litre unit. This Atkinson cycle engine is capable out outputting 141 PS and 182 Nm and is hooked up to two electric motors.
Combined system output of the Honda Civic e:HEV is 184 PS and 315 Nm, making it more powerful than the turbocharged Civic. The Malaysian-spec Civic does 182 PS and 240 Nm.
And thanks to its two-motor i-MMD powertrain, the Civic e:HEV is extremely fuel efficient. Although the specific test cycle was not mentioned, Honda Thailand claimed that the Civic e:HEV returns an impressive 4.0-litre/100 km (25 km/litre), whilst carbon dioxide emissions is just 96 g/km.
Combined with its smaller 40-litre fuel tank (non-hybrid variants offer a larger 47-litre tank), the Civic e:HEV can theoretically travel up to 1,000 km before needing to refuel!
Inside, the electrified Civic also gets features not found on the turbocharged siblings. One such example is the energy flower meter in the infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster. The EL+ gets a 7.0-inch semi-digital instrument cluster, while the RS gets a full-digital 10-inch unit.
Also unique to the Civic e:HEV is the inclusion of rear air-conditioning vents. A feature curiously missing on Thailand’s turbocharged Civic line-up. Thankfully this feature is available on the Pegoh-manufactured Civics.
In terms of safety kit, the 2022 Honda Civic e:HEV includes the full Honda Sensing ADAS suite, including Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow (ACC with LSF), Road Departure Mitigation System with Lane Departure Warning (RDM with LDW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Auto High-beam System (AHS), and Lead Car Departure Notification System (LCDN).
Being a hybrid, the Civic e:HEV variants also add Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System that emits a noise to notify people outside of the car when it is moving at a close distance while in EV Drive Mode.
What about Malaysia?
There are plans for Honda Malaysia to locally-assemble (CKD) the Civic e:HEV in Malaysia, which is set to be the first electrified Civic to be assembled at Honda’s Pegoh facility.
Before the Civic e:HEV makes its debut here however, Honda Malaysia will be launching the new-generation 2022 Honda HR-V first. Bookings are now opened for the refreshed B-segment crossover.
