We hold the F30 BMW 3 Series in high regard for its well-roundedness, which we have covered extensively in previous used car guides. But if you prefer an SUV instead, an obvious alternative would be a used F25 BMW X3.

What do I need to know about the F25 BMW X3?

Let’s start with a brief history on its official introduction in Malaysia. The F25 BMW X3 was launched in Malaysia back in 2011 with a sole fully-imported (CBU) variant, the xDrive20d.

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });

As its nomenclature suggests, it’s powered by an N47 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel with 184 PS/380 Nm, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It was the first BMW model in Malaysia to be equipped with auto stop/start system.

A year later, the petrol xDrive20i variant arrived with an N20 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 184 PS/270 Nm that is also mated to an 8-speed automatic. Both the diesel and petrol variants are all-wheel drive (AWD).

Local assembly (CKD) began in early 2013 with similar equipment level to the CBU model, such as an 8.8-inch infotainment system, automatic dual-zone air-conditioning, and 205-watt 12-speaker audio system just to name a few.

A visual differentiation factor would be the 18-inch wheels on the CKD model compared to the 17-inch items on the CBU model.

In 2014, the facelifted F25 BMW X3 LCI arrived with two CKD variants as before, the petrol xDrive20i and diesel xDrive20d. Powertrain in the xDrive20i is carried over from before but the xDrive20d received a new B47 2.0-litre turbodiesel with a bump in output to 190 PS/400 Nm.

Apart from the new front fascia, equipment levels were tweaked slightly. The xDrive20i gained keyless entry and powered handsfree tailgate, which were equipped in the pre-facelift xDrive20d.

But the xDrive20d was still the better equipped variant with a reverse camera and panoramic sunroof.

Which variant to pick?

We’d favour the diesel xDrive20d but unfortunately, it’s few and far between due to buyer sentiments toward diesel engines. It’s a shame because the N47/B47 engines have proven to be quite robust.

It also suits the behaviour of an SUV, which is to cruise along with minimal effort from the oodles of torque.

But if you share the same sentiment with most buyers, then the xDrive20i will be the one. Choosing between the pre-facelift and facelift is entirely down to budget.

How much is a used F25 BMW X3 going for now?

At time of publishing, early units of the petrol xDrive20i from 2012 to 2013 are averaging around RM 60k to RM 70k, while the diesel xDrive20d – if found listed – command a slightly higher price of around RM 80k.

LCI models are still at least around RM 100k, depending on year, with some over RM 130k.

Any common problems I should look out for?

We spoke to Jason from JW Performance, who told us that the diesel is most reliable variant he’s ever worked on. Examples that have clocked over 300,000 km with minimal repairs are not unheard of.

The N20 petrol engines, however, are more susceptible to oil leaks and timing chain failures. But we were told that it’s more of a reflection of driving habits as it’s more common in aggressively driven cars, and not every N20 engine face this issue.

JW Performance calls this the "Oil Leak Project"

If there are leaks, common places to check would be the engine oil filter housing and engine oil cooler.

Coolant leakage is also a common issue, which can be caused by water pump failure or various connecting hoses.

For examples with more than 100,000 km clocked (which, considering its age, is likely), the xDrive AWD system may start acting up and cause jerkiness when accelerating or strange noises when the steering wheel is at full lock.

Anything else I should know?

As always, beware of units with tampered mileage, have been tuned/remapped, been in a flood or an accident. A full service history will reveal if the mileage has been tampered and would another plus point.

For those who share our admiration of the F30 BMW 3 Series but prefers an SUV, the F25 BMW X3 fits that role perfectly. With prices in the used car market as attractive as they are now, it’s might be worth considering now that you know what to look out for.
