First launched in 2007, the first-generation Proton Persona (CM) marked a return to form for Proton in delivering a value-for-money family sedan for the masses that was robust, comfortable and practical too.
Billed as the car Proton built for customers after listening to what they wanted, and not what 'management' thought was right – a case in point was the lacklustre Gen 2 – the CM Persona was the direct replacement to the popular Proton Wira but made better in every way.
However, despite its popularity when new, used units of the CM Persona are commonly overlooked on the sceond-hand car market, which nonetheless, is a great option for first-time car buyers, especially those with young families. So let’s get into what you need to know before purchasing and where to find the best CM Personas on the market.
The CM Proton Persona range sold in Malaysia
The first-generation CM Persona was officially introduced in 2007. At the outset, the CM Persona was made available in three main variants, the B-, M- and H-Line, which were further subdivided into manual or automatic options with varying solid/metallic paint finishes, giving a buyer up to 7 different variant choices.
The Persona SV even featured a suspension brace for imporved handling
Despite the variety of trim options, power was derived from the sole 111 PS / 148 Nm 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated Campro four-cylinder engine, mated to either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual.
2007 – 2010 production year models of the CM Persona featured the Campro S4PH 1.6-litre. In 2010 however, Proton introduced a range of updates for the facelift model. Commonly referred to as the Persona Elegance, the facelift crucially featured a new 32-bit Continental ECU.

The updated Campro IAFM engine as it was called, however, delivered the same power but offered improved fuel economy and throttle response. The Persona Elegance continued to be offered with a 4-speed auto or 5-speed manual
Besides the powertrains, the Persona Elegance also received a redesigned front bumper, sleek new taillights, improved soundproofing and a revised rear seat backrest which is less upright for more comfort.
Even some B-Segment Japanese sedans did not feature rear disc brakes in 2013
In 2013, Proton launched the Persona SV (Super Value) which became the new entry-level variant at just under RM 45k. The Persona SV offered 2-airbags, all-wheel disc brakes and ABS with EBD fitted as standard, but at a much lower cost than before.
The CM Persona remained a popular seller for Proton throughout its lifespan, regularly topping the company’s sales charts with over 40,000 units sold annually.
The CM Persona finally bowed out in 2016 after being replaced by the current ‘BH’ Proton Persona, which shares its platform and powertrain with the Proton Iriz.
The CM Persona you should buy
Used examples of the CM Persona start at just above RM 10k and rise to RM 25k depending on age and condition, and fitted transmission. Manuals are generally cheaper.
With that said, we would advise prospective buyers to look out for post-2011 or newer Campro IAFM or post-2013 Persona SV variants.
These variants offered more comfort and much-improved efficiency over the Campro S4PH units, not to mention, higher levels of refinement on the road. Aim for the 'Mid' or 'High' variant lists which have more creature comforts if your budget allows.
