The 2019 Proton Saga facelift is our national carmaker’s most important model launch after the much-hyped Proton X70.

It is the most affordable Proton model sold at a price point that most hardworking Malaysians can afford. With the facelift, Proton has elevated its entry-level car to be a desirable product.

Proton engineers did not only set out to make the Saga look good but also focused on making it feel good. The latter although quite abstract, can be clearly felt at every important touchpoint.

From the new fabric seats, fluid 7.0-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, retuned hydraulic power steering and even the grab handles (which are now soft damped), leaves a good and lasting impression that you’re in a much more expensive car than the retail price of RM 39,800 (OTR without insurance) suggests.

More importantly, the Saga now drives better thanks to the new Hyundai-sourced 4-speed automatic transmission which replaces the old CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) auto.

It brings a newfound sense of urgency and competency to the 1.3-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder VVT petrol engine despite pulling the same output figures of 95 PS and 120 Nm.

At under RM 40,000, there is no better option than Proton Saga facelift. Mind you, spec for spec, the 2020 Perodua Bezza 1.3 facelift is RM 4,000 to RM 10,000 more expensive than the Saga. You simply can’t argue against the dollar.
