Those who were holding their breaths for the 2021 Proton Iriz and Proton Persona to get a 4-speed torque converter like the Saga, we've got news for you. The Hyundai-sourced 4-speeder might not see duty on the latest update to both models, the MC2 (Minor Change 2).

According to our friends at Funtasticko, the Punch-sourced CVT transmission will likely soldier on in both models. However, there will be extensive recalibration of the transmission control unit (TCU). This will most likely improve the response and driveablility of the transmission in both cars.

When both cars were launched (Iriz in 2014, Persona in 2016), the Punch CVT was one of the weakest aspects of both these cars, which were otherwise pretty nifty cars. It was noisy, uncouth, and very frustrating to drive.

However, things did improve in 2019 with the MC1 models, which addressed some of its foibles. Tweaks includes a refreshed exterior, a new infotaiment system, and recalibration to the CVT transmission. Owners agreed that the tweaks did make the transmission better, albeit still fundamentally flawed.

All that said, let's hope that the engineers at Proton can further refine the calibration of this transmission. Both models have been spied extensively lately. The MC2 models are set to hit the market in March or early April. 

At present, both the Proton Iriz comes in either 1.3 (94 PS, 120 Nm) or 1.6-litre (107 PS, 150 Nm) VVT engine options. The Persona can only be had with only the 1.6 VVT. Transmission-wise, you can have the manual or the aforementioned CVT. Prices for the Iriz range from RM 36,700 - 50,700, and RM 42,600 - 54,600 for the Persona.
