The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has arrested five tow truck drivers after a fight broke out on who gets to tow away three vehicles involved in an accident along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu highway in Penang.
According to a report by Harian Metro, the accident involved a lorry carrying mosaic tiles and two other cars at around 2 pm on 26-January-2022.
Northeast district police chief, ACP Soffian Santong, told the media that officers of the Northeast police district team who were on site tried to stop the fight to no avail.
Only after calling in backup from the mobile patrol vehicles (MPV) unit and the motorcycle patrol unit (URB) did the fight finally disperse. However, most of the 20 men involved in the fight managed to flee the scene. PDRM is still on the hunt for the remaining men.
The five suspects the police have arrested are locals aged between 26 to 50 years old. PDRM has also confiscated all weapons such as motorcycle fork locks and helmets that were used in the fight.
New Straits Times reports early investigations revealed that the fight started over a misunderstanding over towing rights of the vehicles involved in the accident between 20 men, all of whom are tow truck drivers. The case will be investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code.
