Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric EQ line-up showcases the German marque’s future in EVs. That expansion will also see an electric version of its boxy SUV classic, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class which is expected to be launched in 2024.
The Gelandewagen is built like a tank (except in Australia’s desert) and those armoured crawlers aren’t known for being environmentally friendly or friendly even. For Mercedes-Benz though, turning the G-Class into an electric SUV ensures that the classic remains while being future-proof.
In the latest video shown during Mercedes-Benz’s “Economics of Desire” presentation, the three-pointed star included a short clip of the electric G-Class, likely to be called EQG, doing a tank turn which it calls a “G” turn.
It doesn’t spell out the letter G unlike a U-turn but it’s still impressive for the SUV tank to do it on all 4 wheels. In a LinkedIn post by Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, this is made possible by having an electric motor attached to each wheel.
He added that the EQG can perform a 180-degree turn or more in one spot and without leaving the ground. Granted, this is only for off-road use only so no making that quick spin back to your penthouse if you left one of your Birkins.
Technical details on the electric G-Class are still under wraps but it is revealed that it will feature an independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle specially developed for EVs.
Besides that, the all-electric 4-wheeled tank will also feature innovative battery technology. Herr Källenius has stated that Mercedes-Benz is collaborating with Sila Nanotechnologies Inc to develop batteries that can provide more power in a smaller package.
Mercedes-Benz is targeting this battery could provide more than 800 watt-hours per litre on a cell level, which is up to 40% more than the current market standard for comparable cell formats.
The Concept EQG was previewed in 2021 and was accompanied by the most entertaining video to come out of Mercedes-Benz since announcing its collaboration with The Weeknd. Based on the latest video, the boxy looks will be retained but what do you think of this hulking but silent tank?
