Malaysia ranked number 24 in the global car production chart. Just above Hungary (498,158 vehicles) but behind South Africa (631,983 vehicles).
There are a total of 11 car production plants in Malaysia. Of the total number of vehicles produced, 37,517 units are made up of commercial vehicles while the number of passenger cars produced makes up 534,115 units.
Meanwhile, the country leading the charts is China. The country produced a total of 25 million vehicles - passenger cars alone makes up more than 21 million. But although the number is huge, it is actually 7.5 percent less than the previous year.
Coming in second is the United States, producing 10 million cars in the year 2019. Surprisingly, the country well-known for producing reliable cars, Japan, trails the USA with 9.6 million cars produced in the same year.
But then again, Japanese brands like Honda, Toyota, and Nissan do have production plants in nearly every major car market.
Germany is fourth on the list. The country trails Japan’s numbers by miles having only produced 4.6 million cars in 2019. This puts them just a little ahead of India that produced 4.5 million cars last year.
Another surprising fact, Mexico actually produces more vehicles than South Korea, allowing them to peep Korea by around 30,000 vehicles.
Our neighbours Thailand and Indonesia rank 10 and 16 on the list producing 2 million and 1.2 million vehicles collectively in 2019.
Interestingly, although Indonesia produced more passenger cars (1 million) than Thailand (795,254), the land of smiles managed to rank higher thanks to the larger number of commercial vehicles (pick-up trucks) the country produced.
We estimate that the numbers would fall further in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
