Works Minister: 5 more highways to implement open payment system including MEX and LDP by Sept 2023 01

The monopoly of Touch ‘n Go (TnG) on Malaysian toll payments is about to reach an end as the Works Ministry announced that 5 more highways in the country will be implementing an open payment system.

In other words, highway users will be allowed to pay their tolls via other payment methods besides TnG which include debit cards, credit cards, and perhaps e-Wallet. The 5 additional highways that will be implementing the open payment system are:

  • Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP)
  • SPRINT
  • Shah Alam Highway (KESAS)
  • SMART Tunnel
  • KL-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX)

This brings the total number of tolled highways that will be utilising the open payment system to 11. The 6 that were announced previously were:

  • Sungai Besi Expressway (SBE)
  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)
  • New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
  • Penang Bridge
  • Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE)

The open payment system is planned to begin operations in mid-September 2023 and will be implemented on one lane at the toll plaza. The minister also added that this system would eventually pave the way for a multi-lane fast flow (MLFF) toll system.

Could these be a common sight on Malaysian highways?

Furthermore, Nanta also revealed that the Sungai Besi Expressway has been selected as the location for the Proof of Concept (POC) of the MLFF system. This POC is planned to be implemented by end of October 2023. A second location of the POC will be announced by the minister in the near future.

The MLFF toll system is planned to be rolled out nationwide in phases by the third quarter of 2024.
