audi ventilated seats Q&A Review

Is it true that the Tesla interior is inferior to other luxury auto brands like Audi and BMW?

Very much so. First let’s look at the interior of the Tesla Model S. Those seats are essentially made of plastic. The front seats are heated, the rear seats are a single piece bench. This is a similarly priced BMW 7 series. These seats are real leather. They have heated and ventilated seats to keep you cool in the summer by feeding air conditioning through small holes in the seats. This feature is in both the front and rear seats. As you can see there’s screens in the back for the entertainment system on which you can watch television or films. They feature real wood trim and deep carpeting. Here is the Mercedes S Class. It has all of the same features as the BMW above. Lesser European models that cost half of the Tesla still have better interiors. The industry is fast catching up with Tesla’s EV technology. Tesla will have to up their game on quality. Which cars have ventilated seats in India?

Ventilated or cooled seats have fans inside them which recirculates cool air from cabin or air from AC ducts under the seats through them. It's a simple way to take away the heat from your back in leather covered seats which tend to get hot. Fabric seats don't need ventilation as they have numerous air pockets. Ventilated seats need not be always perforated as some people think. The idea is not to eject air out of those perforations. Heat is merely conducted inwards from the surface and removed by fans recirculating cool air from under seat AC vents, through the seats. When to you turn seat ventilation on, within a few seconds, you can feel the leather seat surface becoming cooler. Not all cars in India have ventilated/cooled seats even if they fall into the Luxury category. For example, Merc E-Class, Audi A6, BMW 5 series and their corresponding SUV versions do not have it.Can you imagine not having this feature in a car costing 60 lakh.Ventilated seat feature is reserved only for their flagships like the S-Class, 7 Series and A8 and the Volvo S90, XC 90, and XC 60. All of the Sedans and SUV’s from Lexus sold in India has ventilated seats. Apart from those cars, you can have front ventilated seats in the Skoda Superb,Toyota Camry Hybrid ,the Mahindra Alturas G4 and Jeep Grand Cherokee in the luxury segment. Even though many luxury cars don't have it, ventilated seats are being offered in lower segment cars like Hyundai Elantra, Kona, New Verna, Kia Seltos and the new Sonet. The Carnival has ventilated seat for the driver only . It's NOT yet available in, Venue,Yaris,City,Corolla,Civic and premium cars like Tuscon, Octavia,Karoq,Kodiaq,Tata Harrier, Fortuner, Endeavour, Innova Crysta , CR-V , XUV700 and no car from Maruti Suzuki. And if you think India’s climate isn’t hot enough, heated front seats are provided in Tiguan ,T Roc and the Volvo XC40. The latest cars to provide ventilated front seats are the Jeep Compass facelift, VW Taigun, New Hyundai Creta and Skoda Kushaq.

Is the Tesla Model 3’s interior cheap?

I’ve had a Model 3 for the past 6 months, since November 2018. The standard of comparison for me is German cars. My other car is a 2018 Audi Q5, and before that, other German cars (Audi, BMW, Porsche). I travel a lot and rent a lot of cars, including Land/Range Rover, Mercedes, GM, Ford, Toyota, etc. Audi in particular I believe has the highest quality interiors, which they are known for. The Model 3 has a minimalist, some would say stark, design to the interior. Contrast that to other cars that are a sea of buttons and stalks. The Model 3 interior design, with one big screen in the center, and no other instruments or buttons on the dash, can be jarring at first. I regard it as a bold attempt to reimagine a car’s interior and I really like it. I find that I don’t need to use the screen much at all in daily driving; 95% of the things I need to do are on the steering wheel (or window buttons). So in some ways it’s like comparing apples to oranges, the Model 3 interior design is so different. For direct comparison, overall, the interior materials are not at the level of the better German cars. The carpet is not as plush. The floor mats are not as plush. The visors don’t have as substantial a feel. The stalks on the steering wheel also don’t feel at the same level as my Audi. Same with the window controls. I wouldn’t call the Model 3 cheap here; I’d say this stuff is more on the level of a Toyota. But it’s also true that this stuff is cheaper feeling than the better German cars. The seats are high quality and comfortable. They are covered in a synthetic leather, very high quality. But real leather is not an option. Heated seats are standard but ventilated seats are not an option. I have leather seats on my Audi and have gotten leather seats on my cars for the past decade or more; the Tesla ones are not leather but it’s really no biggie. The materials covering the dash, the center console, armrests, and the doors all are high quality. They are not plasticky like in cheap cars. There is lots of storage in the center console bins and a nice pad for the phone (which I have replaced with an aftermarket wireless charging pad). The steering wheel feels great. It’s also synthetic leather, fits great in the hand. [Correction: I understand it’s real leather. Elon has committed to replacing it with ”vegan” leather.] And you don’t have to worry about it screening out instruments on the dash in front of you — there are none. Which is a little strange at first at night — when you look ahead to the road in the dark, the dash in front of you is dark, no glowing instruments or indicators. Interestingly, the Model 3 doesn’t even have physical vent controls on the sides or center of the dash; the vents are controlled through the screen in quite an innovative way. The screen — which is the centerpiece of the interior — is of exceptional quality. Big, bright, very responsive touch. This is where the Model 3 interior really stands head and shoulders above anything else. The screen makes the screen of every other car I’ve been in seem like last century cheap junk. Or worse. The screens of the rental cars I’ve been in the last year are utter crap in comparison. Similarly, the UX of the electronics (e.g., using the screen) of the Model 3 is exceptional compared to anything else I’ve used. I don’t need to use it much, and it’s a joy to use when I do. Mostly I use the screen to choose a music source (radio station, streaming audio, audio from the phone for Spotify), navigation, and folding the mirrors when I park in a tight spot (I wish there were a button for folding the mirrors but you have to use the screen). In summary, yes the carpet etc is cheaper feeling than the German cars, but the screen (the centerpiece of the interior) and the software behind the screen are of the very highest quality. PS I mostly drive the Model 3 these days and the Audi only when I need an SUV. When I get back in the Audi, my thoughts are: (1) Wow, what a cluttered mess of so many buttons, dials, stalks, switches, and instruments and a screen. It’s bewildering. The small no-touch screen is a joke compared to my Tesla, which is like an iPad. I have to use the Audi buttons and rotary controller and layers and layers of menus to operate the screen UI, versus direct touch of a much flatter and better organized UI on the Model 3. I hate using the nav and instead use Google Maps on my phone with a phone holder. The entertainment system is painful to use in comparison, especially when switching source. Virtually everything about driving the Audi is a worse experience. A win for the Audi: I get AM radio whereas for the Tesla no AM radio but instead I use TuneIn for the AM stations I listen to, mostly sports. (2) Yeah, the interior materials of the Audi are nicer. The leather seats, the carpet and mats, the dash materials, visor, all are nicer than the Model 3. The Tesla though has better storage compartments. But then I go back to (1) and there’s no doubt which is more important to me. I’m actually a little grumpy if I don’t drive the Tesla that day, and if I’m traveling, one of the things I miss about home is driving the Tesla.

What is a sign that you just need to get up and walk out of the car dealership?

Let me tell you a story about the last car I bought. My wife needed a new car. Our current car was over 250,000 miles and while mechanically sound, I didn’t want to have to worry about something happening to the car and her being stuck somewhere. We hit up a few different dealerships and do some test drives and my wife puts together a list of “must have” items for the new car, things like heated/ventilated seats, HID Headlights (she has very mild night vision issues and the HID lights help her ALOT), and a few other items. The first dealership where we found a car that met our needs…suddenly didn’t have one in stock and wanted to raise the price by several thousand to “order one in from the factory”…when that wasn’t acceptable, they tried to shift us over to a used model but, my wife didn’t like that one so we walked out while the sales person was playing the “I gotta talk to my manager“ game. We go across the freeway to the Audi dealership…find a car we really like but, want to go down a block to look at Lexus before we decide (current car was a Lexus so we know how good they are). Go do a test drive at the lexus dealership and while we liked the car…we decided that we like the Audi just a little bit better. We inform the very kind salesman of our decision and as we are leaving he laughs and says, “Well, if you change your mind, we will be here.” I just laughed back and commented “Hey, they haven’t sold it to me yet.” We all went our merry way smiling. We get back to the Audi Dealership (by this time it’s getting to be dinner time), and find our original salesman and tell him that we would like to talk to him about purchasing a car. (Flag #1) he says great, escorts us to an office and then disappears. We wait for a bit figuring he went to grab some paperwork….but time keeps creeping by. My wife is getting hangry now. And just as we are about to stand up and walk out, this random dude walks in with a bunch of paperwork (Flag #2). He says “Hi my name is John (NHRN), and I am the finance manager, sales man says you want to buy X car.”….. Then he proceeds to list off ALL KINDS OF S**T that we are going to want to add to the car and tells us that the $~40k car was suddenly going to cost more than $60k. My wife has this stunned look on her face and I am livid. My wife just stutters out…”But we haven’t even talked about the color”. (Flag #3) The finance manager looks my wife dead in the eyes and says…”It’s an Audi, they look best in black” (a color my wife absolutely dispises). At this point in time I am beyond angry…I look at him and say that we haven’t even negotiated the base price. (Flag #4) The finance manager tells me “We are Audi…we don’t negotiate.” I look at my wife, she looks at me, I look at him and said goodbye. On my way out the door, the salesman chases us down and asks where are we going. I tell him that his finance manager just F**Ked him out of a sale. We were ready to buy and now we are leaving. He begs us to stay, offers to let us take a drive in any car on the lot, just give him a minute to talk to someone…I simply say no thanks…and leave. You should have seen the look on the faces of the Sales People in the Lexus dealership when we walked back in. After I told them the story, they treated us with white gloves…got a car we love, at a price we wanted. TLDR: Tried to buy an Audi and they played games so we left and went down the block and bought a Lexus.

If you don't own a Tesla and can afford it, what's stopping you?

Just a few weeks ago in October, I signed the contract for a 2017 BMW 750. I traded in my old used 2011 Audi A4. The reason, several actually. I don't find it comfortable- ,When I purchased by Audi A4 a few years back, I spent about 25k. For 25k, I was very impressed with the driving abilities of the A4 and I loved the car, but I didn't find it up to date. Don't get me wrong, the Tesla is a great car, but I found it more uncomfortable than my old $25k Audi A4 for 4x the price. The back seats are even worse. I couldn't adjust the Tesla seat with my watch on because the seat was cramped next to the door. There is no luxury-, The Tesla is a car focused on the pure technologically minded individual— the Silicon Valley executives to say the least. In that respect, it’s a great car. But, from my perspective if it's going to cost me 4x more than my old A4, it should at least match the comfort and luxury of my A4. Tesla finally introduced ventilated seats as an option a month or two back. Automatically adjusting seats, massage functions, and other basic features (for cars over $100k) are yet to be offered. The Tesla still offers the standard power seats while in retrospect the Audi A7 which is the same price as the starting Tesla offers if I am not mistaken 18-way seats. The back seat doesn’t even have a center armrest or console. Technology is Old (not autopilot)- ,Now, I am sure there is going to be some backlash on this, but I feel the technology in the Tesla is rather outdated. Previously, I was fond of the Tesla because it had the latest technology but that's not the case anymore. My BMW has surround view. You would think the Tesla would've had that. Perpendicular park assist and parallel park exit? No. To be fair, my BMW doesn't have this but the Mercedes E300 did an excellent job. ,Now to be fair to the Tesla, yes autopilot is amazing. ,But, in my perspective, BMW or Mercedes comparitive systems are not as good compared to Tesla but sufficent nevertheless at least for me personally. The infotainment system also responded faster in both the Mercedes E300 and the BMW 750 than did the Tesla. The Tesla seemed bogged down because it offers so much screen real estate but not a fast enough processor. Lease is overpriced- ,I lease my cars for my business. The Tesla lease was almost 25% more for a car of the same value as my BMW. Tesla relies on the fact that Teslas require almost no maintenance and fuel savings to try and up sell the lease. My BMW warranty covers all maintenance for my 3 year lease term and fuel savings are nonexistent after the lease’s price markup. It’s Electric,- Now, I am not personally against electric cars. I love the concept, but it’s still for the most part not the meta in the United States. There are not that many charging stations especially in suburbs and rural areas. Second, I value my time considerably and I don’t appreciate waiting for a charge even if it’s only 20 minutes. I also don’t want the headache to worry about getting home after a long trip or range anxiety in other words. Tesla looks down on buyers under 21- ,The last part, which affected me personally, was the way Tesla treats potential customers under 21. The store experience and the purchase experience are second to none, don’t get me wrong, but the environment and culture of Tesla’s operations is built against buyers under 21. Just to test drive a Tesla, I had to call customer support three times—each time promised a call back. Customer support had that “another joy-rider calling me” attitude and talked in hypotheticals “if you are a serious buyer”. I was very insulted. On the third call, I finally got a call back from a manager who arranged a test drive in a minute or two. Wasted quite a lot of my time in total. ,When I got to the store, I was forced to make a reservation and shell out $2,500 on the spot to JUST TEST DRIVE THE CAR. ,Now, I get Tesla is trying to weed out the joy riders, but I most definitely did not appreciate that. When I decided to cancel the reservation as I had purchased the BMW, I had to call in to support and chat with a few different agents to process a cancelation. The refund did not come to my credit card for several weeks. I had to even shell out the $2,500 on my monthly statement to avoid the interest despite the statement being issued 2 weeks after my cancellation. I have walked into tons of dealerships and have NEVER faced such an issue before. In all fairness, a 7 day refund on the reservation is great, but I should not have to make a reservation just to test drive the car. Can you imagine walking into Toyota, “Yes, sir. Since you are under 21, to test drive the 2017 Camry, you need to first place an order. We will need a down-payment of $1,000.” Now yes, I find it very cool to buy a car that represents the future in terms of self-driving capability. However, in terms of value, comfort, and practicality it just doesn’t fit. I do hope that electric cars do take up a significant market share in the future to accelerate charging development. **Thanks for all the upvotes :)**

What is your opinion about the Volkswagen Passat?

Volkswagen passat is actually a king segment car ……it is rich in features which mercedes and audi offers…..puddle lamps,4way climate control, heated mirrors, ventilated seats, auto park assist, lumbar seat support, traction control, ESP (ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM ) ,12 SPEAKERS WITH 8inch touch audio and many more……I have been once into the back seat of passat highline variant …felt like sitting in a mercedes e class…….comfort and luxury at its best……no doubt on its hefty build quality…….the only problem is it service which can burn a hole in your wallet and it's spares are extremely pricey. ….

What are the unique features of Audi?

There is no doubt Audi is one of the most popular brands in the world. It is famous for its stylish and comfortable cars. Every year Audi launches its best cars. Audi is always a favorable brand for many people. Unique features: Ventilation seats Dynamic steering Stylish and Dashing look Smart ambient lighting Semi-autonomous driving Active suspension and many more

Which one should I buy, a Kia Seltos or a used luxury car in India? Both are costing Rs. 16-18 lakhs.

Luxury cars like Audi, Mercedes or BMW costs significantly less than the value they were bought so you will always be tempted to buy these cars. But my advice would be to stay away from buying these cars as buying is one thing and maintaining it is a different thing. Maintenance of these cars is very high, just to give perspective a normal service of BMW X1 will cost you around 25k-35k. Now coming back to your question about Seltos, Seltos has every feature and may be more than what you get in these luxury cars like big infotainment screen with internet connectivity and ventilated seats and no matter which variant you choose they are filled to the gills with features. So without a doubt go for Seltos, if you are so inclined towards buying luxury car in the second hand market, you have to be cautious. Check the car from a reputed luxury car mechanic and check with the dealer if they are offering extended warranty some do provide this. German cars are prone to give more issues as they get older also the spare parts would cost 2 to 4 times more than Seltos. So if you are ready to spend that much you can go far it else my advice would be stick with the Seltos you won’t be disappointed.

How do the Tesla Y and the Audi E-Tron compare on all fronts?

All fronts are kind of tough, but the basics: Tesla’s has a much longer range and lower price. About 100 mile more range (low 200’s to low 300’s for the Y), and about $15-20k lower in base price. Audi doesn’t have a competitor for the performance trim of the Y. Tesla gets better reviews on sport handling and acceleration. It has about 20% more storage space in the back, and is a bit roomier in the back seats (1.5 more inches of legroom, 1 inch more headroom). Audi gets… well Audi luxury, quiet, build quality, and comfort. The E-tron is called Audi’s best overall vehicle by a few different reviewers that I’ve seen. That’s no small statement. Audi makes magnificent cars, especially in ride quality. The Audi is the smoother quieter ride, in part because it’s a heavier car (5700lbs vs. 4400 for the Y). Thus the bigger battery for the slower vehicle with less range. Both have different strengths for options, be it lift-gate access, parking assist, seating for 7 option (coming for the Y). The Audi has a lot of options that are standard on the Tesla (adaptive cruise, heated rear seats), but also has options that go above where the Y does (massaging seats, air fragrance system, ventilated seats, more color options). Tesla has their rapid charging infrastructure, Audi uses the existing ones, which tends to be more about urban areas rather than set up for road trips (looking at US/Canada here, unsure in Europe) which Tesla is ahead of the game on as well as consistent high speed chargers. Both have home charging options. The Y does have the quickest possible charging speed though (both charge 80% in about 30 minutes, but that’s 80 more miles of range on the Tesla. Tesla has the better warranty as well. If cost is no concern, and neither is long trip driving the Audi is the better luxury vehicle. But the Tesla wins out in range, performance, price, charging infrastructure and speed, storage space, efficiency, warranty coverage, and tech (by far in the basic trim vs. basic).
