What's better, a BMW M8 or a Mercedes-AMG S 63?
Beware that Mercedes-Benz S-AMG. I have a $175,000 M-B G63 AMG and it is the most problematic car I have ever owned. Transmission failed at only 30,000 miles. ABS and EPS were declared “Defective.” Designo leather upholstery failed. Custom Alien Green paint job had to be buffed out, and M-B spec’d the wrong color for touchup. Distronic, navigation, and sensors fail repeatedly. And I have filed 3 formal complaints about the car with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration … so far … with other complaints pending. Besides, the S-Class I have driven are far too low slung to even survive the highway potholes in New Jersey. I can’t comment on the quality of the BMW, but the M-B not worth the money and a pile of problems.
What are the mechanisms used in steering system and describe them?
Part of car steering mechanism: tie rod, steering arm, king pin axis (using ball joints). Steering, is the collection of components, linkages, etc. which allow a vessel (ship, boat) or vehicle (car, motorcycle, bicycle) to follow the desired course. An exception is the case of rail transport by which rail tracks combined together with railroad switches (and also known as 'points') provide the steering function. The most conventional steering arrangement is to turn the front wheels using a hand–operated steering wheel which is positioned in front of the driver, via the steering column, which may contain universal joints (which may also be part of the collapsible steering column design), to allow it to deviate somewhat from a straight line. Other arrangements are sometimes found on different types of vehicles, for example, a tilleror rear–wheel steering. Tracked vehicles such as bulldozers and tanks usually employ,differential steering, — that is, the tracks are made to move at different speeds or even in opposite directions, using clutches andbrakes, to bring about a change of course or direction. To alleviate this auto makers have developed power steeringsystems: or more correctly power-assisted steering—on road going vehicles there has to be a mechanical linkage as a fail safe. There are two types of power steering systems; hydraulic and electric/electronic. A hydraulic-electric hybrid system is also possible. A hydraulic power steering (HPS) uses hydraulic pressure supplied by an engine-driven pump to assist the motion of turning the steering wheel. Electric power steering(EPS) is more efficient than the hydraulic power steering, since the electric power steering motor only needs to provide assistance when the steering wheel is turned, whereas the hydraulic pump must run constantly. In EPS, the amount of assistance is easily tunable to the vehicle type, road speed, and even driver preference. An added benefit is the elimination of environmental hazard posed by leakage and disposal of hydraulic power steering fluid. It boosts the driver’s steering power hydraulically. Before power steering, parking a car was an involuntary workout. Only with the advent of the power steering system could larger and heavier vehicles be offered to a greater pool of customers, notes Koch. Servotronic:, The next development in hydraulic power steering was Servotronic, which makes it possible to adjust the amount of steering assistance to suit the speed of the vehicle, explains Koch. Which car is more reliable, MB or BMW?
You decide. I have a $175,000 Mercedes Benz G63 with multiple recalls, a transmission that needed replacing after only 30,000 miles, ABS and EPS that labeled themselves “Defective” not merely “Need Service,” custom upholstery that failed, Distronic and sensor failures, finish that needed scratches buffed out, touch up painting that did not match, and I have already filed two safety complaints with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration … with others pending. In one recent 12 week period it spent 7 of those weeks in the repair shop. The dealer has declined to even make an offer on buying it back. I haven’t driven a Beamer in years but wish I had.
Are there any examples where a company creates such high quality products that they drag the rest of the industry up to compete with them?
I’m no expert, but you gave two classic examples yourself. Another classic case is the past few decades of the automotive industry. the technology, safety features and materials used have been around for years before the mid level manufacturers implemented them, such things as Alloy rims, EPS, Airbags to name just a few have become standard mainly because of the need to keep up with the competitors. Another example from the automotive industry is manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes and other high level manufacturers that came out with small and affordable (or less expensive) vehicles that were prices close to mid level manufacturer prices while still maintaining the high quality expected from such brands.
Are BMWs a good purchase for a used car? And if so, then which year and models make the best used BMWs to buy?
Current BMW owner here. I agree with most of the answers on here about the problems of high mileage BMWs and them being money pits. However, BMWs are good at one thing, the DRIVING experience. If you are one who likes to drive and experience the road beneath; the vehicle communicating in a language measured through steering, braking and handling. You’ve gotta love them. The current BMWs all have EPS and thus an artificial experience if you ask me, plus, too many gadgets ruin the experience. My pick: one of the E39 or E46 era manuals, only because they’re available aplenty. Heck, even the base 2.5L inline six can be fun when you wring the throttle, hit the apex and brake late on a winding B road. P.S.: I couldn’t find one for myself and settled with an E60 but still loving every minute of it.
Why do modern BMWs feel so numb?
Referring to steering feel, it probably has a lot to do with the fact that they are using EPS (Electric Power Steering) instead of Hydraulic. I can’t find definitive info on WHEN they switched, but I know my 07 328i had Hydraulic, and my current E46 DEFINITELY has Hydraulic. If you are looking for a good handling BMW, most of the community has settled on the E90 as the best “modern” 3 series now that E46 is getting kinda old (Mine is 15 years old already!!) While the 1 series is viewed as the closest sibling to the E46 in size and handling characteristics. Personally, I am drawn to the E90 chassis because it is modern, subtly styled, WONDERFUL interior, quiet on the freeway, and economical with 4 doors and a decent sized trunk. I just can’t get behind the look of the 1 series. Of course we each have differing opinions so the rest is up to you! Happy Motoring! -R
