bmw isetta 300 Q&A Review

You can have any vehicle ever made for production, fully restored to show-room condition. Which car/truck do you choose?

BMW Isetta 300 series in the classic and iconic red/white paint scheme. It's not a fast car, it's not an expensive car, it's barely even a car with a small motorcycle engine in it. But it's special looking and I'm sure you'd feel happy everytime you went somewhere in it.

What is the smallest car ever made that they can carry two people?

The Cutest Little Microcars Of The 20th Century BMW Isetta 300

Do I need to pass my motorcycle driving school in order to buy Corbin Sparrow or a BMW Isetta microcar?

The Corbin is three wheels, so I’d guess in California, that class “CM1” might well be required. The BMW Isetta was my first car and actually has four wheels! So the regular class “C” should suffice (in California). BTW: If you know where a nice Isetta 300 is available, please let me know. I would be in the market for such a little jewel. Ted

Why do we think certain car models are cool? Is it socio-cultural conditioning, or do cool car models tap into something deeper?

For me, it just depends on your personality. I like cute quirky stuff but I also love beauty and class, especially if it’s vintage. That’s why I have this ‘64 Continental which covers the beautiful, vintage, and class. And that’s why my next project car will likely be a BMW Isetta 300 and/or 600 because of it’s cute quirkyness. But I also appreciate modern beauty like this 2013 Koenigsegg Agera R

What was your first BMW model? What do you drive now?

My first BMW was a 1958 Isetta 300. BMW produced around 160,000 of these tiny cars between 1956 and 1962. Isettas were very basic cars and with a 1-cylinder engine, they struggled to keep up with even city driving. However, their rolling egg design has a “cute-factor” that was over the top. Originally they sold for around $1000 each. Today a nicely restored Isetta 300 can bring over $40,000 at auction! Today I drive a long-range, dual motor, Tesla Model 3.

What was the first car you bought with your own money?

At 1965, Lansing, Michigan. 1957 BMW Isetta 300. For fifty dollars USD. Running condition, but a bit tired in low places. (My Age 14). Took it ,totally, to bits, rebuilt it and drove it for four years, off and on road. Great and exquisitely fun car on the trails and lanes through the woods by the Red Cedar River. Even went quite well in the snow! Sold it for $350 in 1969 and bought a really nice Honda 305 Scrambler moto with the proceeds.

Who influenced your choice of the car that you drive?

Interesting question. My very first car? The one(s) I drive now? I.) At age ‘prox, 14, I was salivating about my driver license coming up in about two years. I had, via bicycle, discovered a Packard Clipper at the local wrecking yard. Love at first sight. (Now recalling a price of $100.00 for it). Dad, the architect, agreed to look it over with me. He said “Christ, you’d need a crane just to get the motor and gear box out of that thing to rebuild it”. Thence, “I know a superintendent at the school district who has a BMW Isetta 300 for sale. He wants $50.00 for it. You wanna go look at it?” It started, ran and drove ok. The whole thing weighed about 900 pounds. The rest was history. I’m no good at some minor body work it needed, but with Dad’s guidance and development, I took that thing completely to bits and restored it mechanically to perfection! What a thrill. Drove that thing through acres of wood land and adjoining nursery property ‘till I got my license at 16. II.) Nowadays, I drive a Porsche 911S, 1974 model. Daily. Prior to that, I was in a ‘77 Carerra 3.0 for twenty two years. Daily. Back story to that: When I met a high school girl friend’s (no benefits) father, who had just purchased a new 1970 Porsche 911T , color fly yellow, Ray Olson offered me a ride. The rest is history. Thanks for reading.

What's an unusual car you would love to own?

Boy, there are a few, but I’ll keep it down to the ones off the top of my head. The first would have to be a 1950s BMW Isetta, either the standard or the 300 The standard had a 250cc single cylinder engine with about 12 horsepower and the 300 model had a 300cc version with about 13 horsepower. I’ve heard that these little cars got about 75 miles per gallon. I love them because I like miniature style things like realistic doll house furniture, especially if it was functional. The second is another 1950s Isetta but this time, it’s the 600 model. This one added another row for two additional mini people and was a “two door”. It also got a larger, 600cc 2-cylinder engine. The last car that I can think of right now is a 1980s Consulier GTP. It’s a crazy designed supercar from the 80s and is very quirky. It has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and is extremely light. I fell in love at first sight and just can’t help but want one.
