bmw hawaii Q&A Review

What screams "I'm pretending to be upper class"?

I had a classmate who must have married a rich guy. I didn’t even try to keep in touch with her after high school. But we ended up friends on Facebook. That was the time I just accepted every friend request from everybody I’d ever met in life. After a while, she started to get on my nerves. She constantly complained about her upper class problems. I don’t think I have time to get the cabin ready for summer. All the linens I ordered haven’t come in yet. I want to kids to sleep on new sheets, not last year’s garbage. Paris was great, but now we don’t have enough time to get the boat ready for the lake. I just hope the new furniture arrives at the cabin on time. The painters came on the wrong day. They were supposed to come before the new carpet, and before the furniture arrived. So we had to put our new living room furniture in the theater room. It’s so inconvenient. Can somebody teach me how to use the navigation system in my new Mercedes S Class? I miss my BMW 740i. I just can’t learn a new navigation system every year like this. Just got back from Hawaii for Christmas. Now I have to supervise these caterers for the New Year party. I later found out that they had a second mortgage on the house, credit card debt, and they were a month away from foreclosure. That didn’t make me happy, but it explained why she was always complaining about her problems. She was trying to make people that she hadn’t seen in a decade think that she was doing fine.

As a police officer, what is the most inappropriate thing someone ever did to get out of a ticket?

I pulled over a speeder in a Convertible BMW. As I approached the vehicle, a female driver seemed to be squirming in her seat. When I got to her driver side window, I realized that she had removed her underwear and was sitting there with her skirt pulled all the way up exposing herself. I retreated to my car and requested a cover car and waited to approach again until I had a cover unit. At that time, she threw her underwear at me and asked if she could do anything for us to get out of the ticket. (Nudity in Hawaii is not a criminal charge if only the officers see it-and cannot be the “offended party”). I informed her that she needed to produce her documentation and I issued the summons after running her for warrants. She was not happy about the 3 citations she received but paid the tickets and I never had to appear in court to explain her actions to the judge.

Why are there so many abandoned cars in Maui?

Some more reasons why vehicles are frequently abandoned on Maui: Repair Costs- everything costs more in Hawaii Nei, including auto repairs. Stolen- chances are fairly good that an abandoned vehicle is stolen. The expense and hassle of going to DMV to lawfully scrap your undriveable vehicle. Scrap metal isn’t worth nearly as much as it used to be. The County of Maui had a program to assist Maui residents in disposing of their unwanted vehicles and I think it’s still in effect but not after Mayor Arakawa leaves office this year. My friend’s neighbor’s tenant abandoned a nice BMW when he was evicted. He did it just to spite the landlady by creating more hassles for her to deal with. It’s extremely difficult to locate and purchase replacement repair parts for vehicles. I once needed a new rear axle for my Nissan truck. It sat for 4 months in my driveway until I heard from a friend that his friend’s friend’s auto body shop had just taken in a salvageable truck and I better call quick if I wanted that axle.

How much annual salary would you have to make to be considered well-off in Silicon Valley?

Don’t confuse annual salary with total compensation. The companies I worked for kept the “base pay” relatively low. In the lean years (and there are always lean years), living on the base pay was a challenge. In the good years, bonus, stock options, RSUs, etc., easily doubled, tripled or more the base pay. Once in a great while is the outstanding year (wildly appreciating stock and or stock options) that would change your life forever. How much is needed really depends on you. If you want to live in a single family home near Stanford in Palo Alto $$$$ or Los Altos $$$$, or in one of the upscale bedroom neighborhoods of Silicon Valley such as Saratoga or Los Gatos (both $$$$), housing is ridiculous. Then again, the schools in those towns are all superb. Suppose you could find a liveable house in one of those four places for $2 million (a laughably low amount for those towns), California property tax is fixed as a percentage of purchase price, roughly 1.2%—figure $24,000 a year on a $2M purchase. The good news is the tax bill cannot increase more than 2 or 3 percent per year after you purchase the property. (The history of California’s property tax is fascinating, and driven by a speculative run-up in home prices in the 70s that drove retirees out of their homes because they could not pay the ever increasing property tax. It lead to a taxpayer revolt.) Assuming you have $400K to put down on your $2M home, that means your annual payments on a 30 year fixed would be (7,700 x 12) $92,400. Throw in insurance and the tax bill and you are looking at $130K per year for housing without maintenance—and there is always maintenance. The old rule of thumb is the housing cost (mortgage, insurance, tax) should not exceed 40% of your annual income. That puts your annual income at $325K for a home you probably don’t want to buy. And, although we all pay the same Federal tax, California’s tax rate at the top end is around 10% so figure as much as 30% (perhaps more) for your net tax bill. If you have followed this so far, you realize 40% went to housing, 30% to income taxes leaving you with 30% of your $325K to live on. So, you say, I can live on $97,500 a year, no problem…hold on…you asked, “Well off” My wife and I were at a very nice wine bar but certainly not Michelin rated. We had three glasses of wine between us and two “tasting” sized appetizers. Total bill before tip? $99.00. Why? Because the shops and restaurants have to cover their rent. And the rents in Silicon Valley for prime commercial real estate are out of this world. Rumor has it the three star Michelin restaurants in the Bay area (French Laundry, Manresa) are now running over $1,000 for a dinner for two on their prix fix menu with the wine pairing. You did say, “Well off”. Add to cost of commuting (there is no effective public transportation) with a car, insurance, maintenance and gas (the country’s most expensive, by the way). Of course, “well off” as you posed in your question would mean you are driving BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Tesla…you get the idea. And, of course, “well off” would do at least two vacations a year—Hawaii and Europe. I had one board member tell me that the pressures of my job were such I should plan on a 4 or 5 day weekend each quarter plus take two vacations for at least a week each year. He suggested Hawaii for the 4 day weekends and the long vacations should be in Europe, Australia, Bora Bora, or take cruise trips—on Silversea or Seaborn. I hope you are getting the idea. Your discretionary $97,500 out of $325K disappeared a long time ago. Can you live for less? Of course! There are apartments, condos, townhouses and even homes in communities that have solid (but not superb) schools that go for a lot less than $2M. But your question was qualified by the term “Well off”.

Why do the Japanese love Hawaii?

Because that is the closest “Western World” location to them, and those Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci handbags they love so much are about 40% cheaper (to them) in the Western world. And considering that those are $5 - 10K (and up…WAY up) items, it's well worth the price of two tickets to paradise. That “trick” also applies to cars. That Mercedes or BMW that is $150K in Japan would be more like $80 - 100K in the West...more than worth the $ to ship it to Japan and retrofit it to Japanese specs. What was America's largest mall (Ala Moana) before the Mall of America came along is in Honolulu - and it is stuffed to the bursting point with those high-end designer boutiques and goods, which the Japanese buy by the carload…at full retail. The resulting flood of sales tax revenue is one of the reasons Hawaii has by fàr the best state park system (and such a large % of preserved public lands) in America. So everyone is happy. If I weren't on my phone, I would tell you a funny story about the last time I was there. Let's just say that - BION - Americans are NOT the most shamelessly materialistic folks on Earth, despite what everyone thinks.

What is the brutal truth about owning a Rolls Royce car?

I actually owned a 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow for several years, and found much of the ownership to be brutal. It was taken as a trade for some work I completed on someone's home, and in hindsight I should have just taken cash. I was not cut out to be a “Rolls Royce Owner” I guess, and while I could appreciate the craftsmanship that went into building it, it certainly was not designed for Hawaii's climate. The previous owner didn't keep up the maintenance or the cosmetics very well due to cost I'm sure, so after a few years here in the islands, the cancer started to spread all over the body. I did find out while doing some of the work on it, a little known fact if you aren't particular about keeping it original. I was able to order a complete shop manual so I could do some of the repairs on it, but I also found a book that listed all of the parts that could be substituted for GM equivalent parts and still work. Stuff like a fuel pump or a tail light that could save you some money if you happen to have one that is just a driver and not really for show. Unlike most other Rolls Royce owners, I was not afraid to get my hands in there and do work on it, as I do all of my own mechanical repairs on my vehicles. I actually liked the fact that everything was so well engineered, and was always amazed when I would take something apart and could see the way it worked. Most things on it were able to be serviced, and made to work properly again if you understand them and put the time into cleaning and fixing them. I prefer to work on old cars for that exact reason, stuff was built to be serviceable, rather than today's disposable mentality and planned obsolescence. The features that came built into that car in 1969 are still not standard features in most cars today, and I always thought it was so far ahead of its time with the options included, since all of the classic cars I had worked on before were muscle cars. The electrical systems were a nightmare however, and one of my biggest reasons for eventually ditching it. After several years I simply had enough, and ended up selling it to a young kid who had a “less than legal” stream of disposable income, and wanted to “pimp it out”. If he actually dropped the $20,000 into it that I suggested he should to make it a real head turner again, I would be surprised. Since I haven’t seen it in the past 5 years on this small island, its more likely sitting in someone's back yard, rotting into the ground, and will be a beautiful piece of automotive history lost to the four letter plague called rust. I think its also worth noting that for this age, there are many available for sale at a decent price, and most are in really fantastic condition(much better than this one for sure). They don't seem to hold value unless they are really old, and if you wanted a nice driver, it would cost a fraction of a brand new Mercedes or BMW. You would have plenty left over to pay for the maintenance. It takes a certain type of person though I suppose. I should mention that I did not paint it this hideous color, this was what it looked like on the day I got it. It was a daily driver for the previous owner, albeit an ugly one. I always intended to repaint it back to something more respectable of course, and restore it back to its former glory, but having children changed that plan for me. This was a chapter of my life that the timing unfortunately just didn't work out for this classic. Similar to most boat owners, the two best days in my ownership of this Rolls Royce were the day I got it, and the day I sold it. This is what I envisioned when I got it- And this is probably what the kid I sold it to was thinking- But in reality, it probably ended up like this- I suppose to answer the original question, the real brutal truth for me about a Rolls Royce car, is that I really just needed to get rid of it and pick up something more my style… :) Straight 6, big tires, and can go anywhere. There are only about ten wires in the whole thing, and it looks perfectly acceptable with rust. Much better suited for Hawaii's brutal climate, and shitty roads. This beast still turned plenty of heads though, just different folks.

What screams "I'm upper class" in Toronto?

Here are some simple everyday things that you can do to join the ranks of the privileged. 1. Drink only Starbucks. Never be caught dead at the other popular coffee chain that sounds like Jimmy's. 2. Shop for groceries only at Whole Foods. Don't look at the price- you'll lose your appetite. 3. Drive a Porsche/ BMW or any ecologically friendly alternative like a Tesla vs a regular Japanese or Korean brand. 4. Holiday at Jamaica, Hawaii or Mexico never ever Cuba. 5. Drink Henessey/ Cognac or sing...

What would it be like to sail to Hawaii?

If you were to drive a Formula 1 car from LA to NYC it would be a very uncomfortable trip. Do the same thing in a BMW and it's cruising all the way. Sailboats are the same--many are designed to be boy racer craft, and are pretty uncomfortable in the open ocean. Others are more like the BMW and can give a nice smooth ride. Mostly passagemaking is boring boring boring or downright terrifying, depending on the weather.
