bmw m5 bumper Q&A Review

In cars, what is a "sports model"?

‘Sports’ can be called a trim level. They mostly tune a ECU which gives it some horsepower buff and changes the gearing ratio and helps inject more fuel into the engine. ,This overall makes the car more snappier. Manufactures sometimes also give it some better brakes and a stiffer suspension. Some better exhaust or intake. If not anything, they give it some cosmetic upgrades like a spoiler or some beefier bumpers or some different set of wheels ,(kudos if they paint the wheels and badges black). These are all just Racing Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. Which doesn’t necessarily change any driving dynamics. ,But if designed properly they can improve the car’s air intake and some well designed spoilers can help the car maintain stability under high speeds. Well it all differs manufacturer to manufacturer and also on the price you pay for the ‘sports trim level’ Some Examples… BMW 5 Series and BMW M5 BMW 5 series BMW M5 Both are based on the same car but M5 is complete overhaul to the 5 series. M5 has a V8 compared to a Inline 4 in the 5 series. Different exhaust. Almost different everything! Basically it’s a supercar killer. It’s even unfair to compares these two. The M5 costs more than twice the top level 5 series and it’s worth it! Here the cosmetic upgrades aren’t just for show. They are all purposefully made. Skoda Octavia vs Skoda Octavia vRS Skoda Octavia Skoda Octavia vRS ‘vRS’, is sports trim of Skoda they get a different set of wheels and some sportier bumpers and brakes. It also gets a ECU tune which bumps up it horsepower number and torque. The vRS gets 230 HP and 350 Nm of torque and the normal Octavia gets 180 HP and 250 Nm of torque. The vRS costs about $8000 more than the Octavia. Swift vs Swift RS Swift Swift RS Swift RS has no mechanical upgrades. It’s all cosmetic. This ‘RS’ package costs around $400 more than the normal swift. In this case cosmetic upgrades are worthless and add unnecessary weight to the vehicle. Instead get the normal Swift. Sports model is all about making the vehicle more driver focused, adding to the driving aesthetics of the vehicle. Thanks for reading.

What three things should a person avoid once they are past 70 years old?

My top 3. And I’m north of the 10th anniversary of my 50th birthday. Somewhere, I’m just not sure. First, acting old. Most people hit 70 and suddenly start acting old. They eat early bird dinners. They don’t drive at night. They can’t go for a long walk. They’re retired but can’t return phone calls. And pretty soon they start looking old and walking old. Instead, forget about your age. Do everything you should have been doing at 40 to stay in good health. Then keep doing all the things that you used to enjoy and slowly gave up. And most of all stop acting and looking old. Seriously, it’s not a good look. Second, thinking old. Most people hit 70 and mentally give up. They retire so they can do, well, nothing. They spend hours watching mindless TV and then can’t remember what was even on. As well as what they walked to the bedroom to get. Instead, keep your mind active. If you have a job you like keep working. If you retire then recreate your life into something meaningful. Oh, and turn off the TV. Believe me, you won’t miss anything. And you just might start remembering stuff like what was in the bedroom. Third, speaking old. Most people hit 70 and start talking old. They’re always saying, “Oh, I’m too old for that.” Or constantly telling you about their aches and pains and how old they feel. And you know what, as they constantly remind themselves they start believing it. Instead, never utter the words, “I’m old.” I don’t care how old you are. And purposely forget when you were born so you can’t remember your age. Then do the things you like and never speak of age again. You’ll surprise yourself and frankly shock others. It’s fun. A friend of mine, who is a bit older than me, has a bumper sticker on his BMW M5 which says, “Growing old is mandatory, acting old is optional.” My philosophy of life even if sometimes I do forget what I went to the bedroom for. You’ll age successfully but only as you purposefully forget your age.

Should I buy BMW M5 or Audi R8?

Automobiles are primarily a medium of transportation. They take you from Point A to Point B. We all have different purposes of using automobiles ranging from our office commute to the daily grocery shopping. Buy it, use it and maintain it is the normal routine which most people would tend to follow with automobiles. However, there are some automobiles which people buy for reasons that transcend the mundane. These are aspirational automobiles. These vehicles are bought by enthusiasts, who always find a reason to drive them. They describe these vehicles as an extension of their own personality. A certain premium car manufacturer called BMW makes cars for these enthusiasts under the “M” tag. The M, which denotes Motorsports, is the performance version of the normal production models. In our review of the latest generation 2012 BMW M5, we find out more on the nemesis offering from BMW and if it still holds the laurels earned by its predecessor. Exterior I am sure If Mercedes Benz designers were asked about their favorite music, it would have been something by Ludovico Einaudi or Mozart but BMW designers would have chosen Metallica or perhaps Marilyn Manson. The anger and aggression on the BMW models have become very synonymous with the brand. It is very natural on why the young hot blood chooses the Bayerische cars over anything else. The all new BMW M5 is not a beautiful car at all, instead it boasts of robust lines on its body. It looks as if it has not been designed but carved from a block. Though it is based on the 5 series, the styling of the M5 speaks volumes about the performance of this sedan. A normal road can transform into a race track, with the notorious cues on the car. Front face is a chunky mass of metal with carvings to help the air flow. BMW designers decided to keep only the elements which are needed on a high performance car so you won’t find fog lamps on the front bumpers instead you will find three massive air intakes to swallow as much air as possible to cool the monster V8 engine as well as for other requirements. Also to add to this are the solid contours on the bonnet which meet the iconic kidney grille. The side profile would remind you of the regular 5 series but won’t make you confusedly mistake for it. This is cause of the 20-inch M light alloy double spoke alloy wheels. There is barely any rubber on those wheels. It looks insanely awesome. The long stretched wheelbase, lower suspension arrangement and the low slung styling make it look very sporty especially with the side skirts and wheel flares on the body. The M gills on the front panel tastefully finish the side styling. M rear spoiler on the boot lip shall make the one following you understand about this sedan’s potential along with the M5 badge on the right. Still, if he manages to miss it, the under fit quad shot gun exhaust pipes will assure him of the M5’s prowess. Unlike the 5 series, the M5 has got reflectors on the top line of the bumper. The 2012 BMW M5 looks like a proper illegal street racing car. It is very notorious and mischievous. Even in standstill, the car screams about its performance statistics. One can’t possibly look wrong in a M5. Even with a wrong maneuver can make you look “cool” in this car. Interior Extremely aggressive exteriors are a total treat. However the interiors miss the wow factor. It is heavily borrowed from the 5 series, which has its highs and lows. The Highs are the interiors of the M5 are not very dramatic so even the matured buyer can opt for it. The lows are since the interiors are very reminiscent of the 5; there is nothing refreshing about it. M5 badged scuff plates welcome you inside the cabin. The Merino leather upholstery is just fine and is extremely comfortable. Even though the M5 is a performance sedan, the seats are still very comfortable unlike the 2012 BMW 328i, which has extra bolstered seats. Legroom is comfortable for the front row and decent for the rear. Perhaps guys at BMW knew that a M5 customer will not be spending too much time at the rear seat, which is so true. The M badge affixed and custom stitched Nappa leather steering wheel has two M mode options M1 and M2 on it which can be manually configured for performance and comfort settings respectively. Instrumental cluster is simple and stylish. I have a small complaint with the 2012 328i and now this one too which is the digits on the speedometer and tachometer, this is perhaps I want the car to be as sporty and aggressive in the interiors as well. Aluminum finished paddle shifts, right for up and left for down are just behind the steering wheel. They provide proper grip and also help to give a performance sedan feel to the driver. The heads up display is a standard arrangement on the M5. Around the staunch M auto shift stick, there are 3 custom engine performance options Effeciency, Sport and Sport Plus, which tweak the ride according to the desired condition. These modes are highly active and one can notice it as soon as it is activated. For example, as soon as it is shifted in the sports mode there is a noticeable rise in the engine rpm. The front door pockets can hold a 1L bottle easily. Also there are many intermittent storage options on the central console and also on the rear row of passengers. The boot space of the 2012 BMW M5 is a generous 520 litres. This is a lot of boot space for a sedan like this. Performance Under that long never ending hood lies a monster heart. The 2012 BMW M5 has a all new V90 styled 8 cylinder 4395 cc engine. It is equipped with an M TwinPower Turbo charger. This mammoth produces a power of 560bhp at 6,000 – 7,000 rpm and a torque of 680 Newton metres between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. BMW has given a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic to whip this monster. Though what we didn’t try but can still vouch for is the 0 – 100 km/h timing which is 4.4 seconds. It is perhaps the same time you would take to smile from a frown face. The 2012 BMW M5 apart from the awe struck performance figures is easy on the pockets too. It burns 30 percent less fuel than the earlier generation and also has 2 cylinders less than the same. The number of cylinders has been decreased but the fun factor has not as the new M5 delivers 10 percent more power and 30 percent more torque. These figures are very impressive on paper but the real fun begins when you push her on the road. As BMW rightly puts it, the 2012 BMW M5 is a wolf under a sheep. Push the start button and the petrol mill starts singing a growly note. I doubt BMW guys have hidden a hard metal band inside the exhaust note as when you push her, a high grungy metal note starts screaming at its peak. The best note however comes when you twist the throttle to the max with the Quad shot gun pipes shooting to glory. However, with so much of insane amounts of power one still feels in control of the 2012 BMW M5. This makes it a bit better than the E63 AMG which feels all over the place when twisted. Boasting of a 16 speaker Harman Kardon sound system, the new 2012 BMW M5 promises to be a business jet with high performance. With a car like the M5, I don’t mind if BMW forgets giving me the music system as I am too much lovestruck by the exhaust note of the vehicle. Travelling in this is like travelling in an envelope of technology. The new M5 offers three different gear changing styles in the S mode S1, S2 and S3. While the S1 is more of a comfort shift, the S2 inclines to a smart crisp shift. While, the best is the S3, which makes the M5 more mentally insane as it activates the Launch Control also it switches off the stability control. This brings out all the dynamics of the car and ensures one gets maximum acceleration on the rear wheel. The M5 is equipped with a six piston caliper brakes with a fixed at front and a floating at rear arrangement. The inner-vented and perforated brake discs have a diameter of 400 mm at the front and 396 mm at the rear. Since it’s a performance sedan, the M5 takes some bruising on our normal roads especially with some tall speed bumps on toll nakas. Maneuvering the M5 is not at all difficult even with such dimensions as the hydraulic steering arrangement is very precise. The only issue that we faced were with the brakes acting little lazy in stopping the sedan which was perhaps an outcome of some enthusiastic driving of the earlier auto journos. On the highways, the 2012 BMW M5 brings an evil smile on your face as it gives you the confidence to overtake anything possible on road. If you are cruising around lazily and suddenly feel the need for speed, crank up the music and shift the stick to sports more along with the S3 gear shift option. With all the necessary sports settings, the M5 tears the streets with ease and has a razor sharp handling to compliment it further. The suspensions happily gulped whatever surface was thrown at it. BMW cars have always been a great handler with amazing and stiff suspensions. A 4.4L petrol guzzler Performance sedan is not the obvious choice of someone who cares a lot about fuel efficiency. We got a worst fuel mileage of 3 kmpl and a best of 9 kmpl which is commendable. We however could not complete our review drive as the low profile tyres of the M5 could not take the streets anymore and went flat as we were nearing the vehicle drop location. This gave us an opportunity to review the BMW Roadside assistance. After enquiring all the necessary details about the vehicle, finally a flat bed truck was sent to the rescue. It was not a great site to see our Monte Carlo Blue BMW M5 belted and then taken away on the truck from the scene. There is no issue with low profile tyres but there are many issues with the Indian roads which show its true color in monsoon. Conclusion The all new BMW M5 is by far the raciest sedan I have ever driven. The 2012 BMW M5 scores more than the for me as the latter has got amazing tons of power but then the M5 seems to know on how to control it. With an increased power and torque output along with reduced fuel consumption, the latest generation BMW M5 promises to be an enthusiast’s favorite for long. It is priced at Rs. 98,90,000 which is in line with its rival models. Sports themed exteriors could have done with equally awesome interiors too but then it’s difficult to maintain the balance between sporty and comfort at the same time. “M” for me is mentally insane as the 2012 BMW M5 is insanely powerful. The pull you get after acceleration (with the Launch Control) is totally worth it. If you have recently transformed from a very-adorable-good-boy to a carefree-brash-rebel, the 2012 BMW M5 is the perfect ride for you. Although, if you manage to get one you would be banned from the neighborhood cause of the Quad pipe exhaust notes.

Have you had an experience that was so blatantly racist, that you were just dumbstruck?

I started a new job back in 2010. I was one of 3 new engineers. My parents are Pakistani. One guy was black and the last one was English. We had to go round and introduce ourselves to each other. I was the last to introduce myself. as soon as I said my name,(my name consists of 4 letters) the English guy said ‘errrrrrr, what kinda name is that. I can’t pronounce that…. Can I call you something else?’ I was taken aback. As was new boss and my colleague. I responded ‘just call me Ash’. As the days went by, his racism became more and more noticeable. ‘Why don’t you go back to Pakistan and work?’ ‘Why did your parents come to the Uk’. ‘Where did you get the money to buy such an expensive car, drugs’? Etc etc. I ignored him best as I could. But was difficult as we worked in the same team. I remember it being Ramadan and he made it his mission to come sit by me and eat and drink. And CONSTANTLY ask why we fast. Anyway, one day we had to travel to another location. I had a pretty expensive BMW M5 and he had a banged up 4x4 with bull bars. I was driving in front as I had sat nav and he was following. While manoeuvring a roundabout I was hit from behind. By the sound the crash made, the damage was expensive. I pulled up and got out to have a look. Colleague got out from his car and was apologising. He said he misjudged. He truly was apologetic. He said to let him know how much. I said it doesn’t matter. Just give insurance details. And it’s sorted. As a cash job will be expensive. He was adamant he wanted to pay cash. I went to BMW and they simply said they wouldn’t fix the bumper, will just get a new one. Cost of £3,500. I gave him the quote. And also knew he couldn’t afford it. Now came the rest of his story. He didn’t have insurance. As he was waiting to be paid to buy insurance. He had kids and had hadn’t worked in some time hence was short of money. He had kids and his Mrs didn’t work. I went to my local body repair guy and got a quote for £200. Told my colleague to just pay me that and we’ll call it even. We are best of friends today. He’s never missed my sons birthday. Drives over 200miles to attend. And I always do the same. Shame it took so long for him to realise that colour, religion means fuck all. Humanity is what matters.

What are the most reliable Mercedes Benz cars between 2000 - 2005?

The long time ever dependable Mercedes Benz where models in the E series E-240-E-320 that where manufactured between 2002 Germany International models year up to 2006. These where the best Engines dual spark plug and the best ZF 722.6 Transmission ever made that reached 1,000,000 Kilometers / 620,000 miles quite easily. The same ZF 722.6 transmission was used by a dozen other car manufacturers including some military service vehicle. In the USA -North America 2003–2006 models only the 6 cylinder E320 was available, reegardless it was a dual spark plug model that exceeded pollution standards of most similar models. Models Covered: Third generation E-class saloons and estates- 2002 to date: (E200K, E240, E320, E220CDi, E270CDi, E320CDi] History Upon launch in June 2002, the Mercedes E Class range consisted solely of saloon models, customers having to wait another year for estate models to materialise. Two petrol V6s were available, the 175bhp E240 and the 221bhp E320. There was also a range-topping 5.0-litre V8 that powered the 302bhp E500 and two torquey common rail turbodiesel units. The 148bhp E220CDi opened proceedings with the 175bhp E270CDi providing even more in the way of overtaking muscle. Soon to follow was the 204bhp E320CDi that is probably the finest car Mercedes make bar none. Those looking for ultimate power should look no further than the 476bhp (but in reality closer to 500bhp) E55 AMG, a car that instantly made the BMW M5, the Jaguar S-TYPE R and the Audi RS6 look a little gutless. It even managed to outmuscle Porsche's factory upgrade to the 911 Turbo. That's serious. An entry-level 163bhp E200K supercharged model was also slotted in to broaden appeal. In the Winter of 2004, the 3.2-litre E320 models were replaced by the E350 and its 3.5-litre V6 engine. Mercedes took extensive measures to improve the quality of this E-Class in the summer of 2006, introducing more advanced technology across a number of its systems but it's wasn't immediately apparent that the new models were such heavily revised vehicles. True Merc anoraks may spot the front bumper, v-shaped grille and revised headlights but that's about it externally. Inside, it's more of the same with a revised steering wheel and climate control panel being about the size of it. Under the skin, it's a different story. Handling and steering were improved as were the engines and the adaptive braking system was borrowed from the S-Class. In the engine bay, the E200K was boosted to 184bhp and the E500 got an all new 388bhp V8 lifted from the S-Class. An E65 AMG model was introduced at the top of the range while some of the diesels also received power enhancements. Notably, the big selling E220 CDI was increased to 170bhp. Aluminium body panels are used to keep weight down. The bonnet, front wings, boot lid and some strengthening gussets are all made from aluminium and contribute to a significant weight loss. This has been helped by using varying thicknesses in many of the body panels without sacrificing torsional rigidity, which has also been increased. Despite appearances, this E-Class is larger than its predecessor, the width upped by 23mm and the height by 12mm. Although the length has remained the same, interior packaging has been helped by an increased wheelbase. The interior styling is redolent of the S-Class. The fascia bulges outwards as if pumped to 100psi, the E320 test car featuring over 70 assorted knobs, buttons, switches and dials. Open the glove box to access the instruction manual if you want to know what does what or alternatively use it to defend your vehicle against would-be carjackers. How does one overcome fear of getting older?

I’m north of the 10th anniversary of my 50th birthday. Somewhere, I’ve just forgotten where. A friend had a bumper sticker on his BMW M5 that read, “Getting old is mandatory. Acting old is optional.” He’s a bit older than me and I thought, “Yeah! That’s how I want to be when I grow up.” A friend on Facebook recently posted about buying a used adult tricycle. She excitedly stated, “I may be old but I’m not dead.” She’s younger than me and I thought, “What the hell?” Another friend, who’s a bit older than me, just traded in his Porsche 911 on a brand new one. I asked, “So why did you get it?” He responded, “I wore the other one out. I figured it was time to buy a new one and wear it out too.” I laughed and responded, “Fabulous, wear it out and get another.” Another friend, who is about his age, tells me all she can’t do because, “You know, I’m old.” And I think, “I’ve never once allowed those words to leave my mouth and they never will.” A friend I grew up with sold his home and moved to a retirement center recently. He said, “I want us to be in a place so my wife is secure as I fade away.” I thought, “How depressing.” My wife and I just bought a second home in Carmel, our piece of paradise. We’ve gone there for weekend escapes since we first married. And took our kids there for summer vacations. Our daughter, son-in-law and grandson live a few houses away. And our son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter love to visit. We took out a 30 year mortgage because I didn’t want to disturb our other investments. I told our kids, “And I’m paying off the damn thing so you’re stuck with me for a long time.” They laughed or else they’re nervous. In every case age wasn’t the key. Attitude was. And my friend’s bumper sticker is now a life motto. “Getting old is mandatory. Acting old is optional.” You overcome the fear of growing old only when you intentionally forget how old you are.

Have you ever been treated differently because of the car you were driving?

My entire adult life I’ve driven sports cars as a daily driver, BMW M5, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi Eclipse, etc. In 2005 I purchased a Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, drove the car every day for 12 years, stopped by police at least once a month, the record was three times in one afternoon. I’ve been stopped for, 28 MPH in a 25 MPH zone, following too close in bumper to bumper traffic, driving too slow, car modifications, (the car was stock from the dealer), talking on my cellphone when I left my phone on my kitchen table, and twice for armed robbery, the whole guns were drawn lay on the ground, cuffed, fingerprinted, interrogated for hours deal. The funny thing is the Evolution was the SLOWEST car from the list of three above, My M5 put out close to 900 HP, it was downright scary, and in 5 years of ownership, I was never stopped once. I read news stories about racial profiling by police, as a white guy, I believe EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. The day I was stopped three times by police, I was driving a neighbor to pick up his car at the dealer, he happened to be a doctor and African American. What should have been a 20-minute trip, took over an hour and a half.

What do car engine designers think of their own design when mechanics slate it for been a very poor design and prone to failure. Are they embarrassed for making an engine pretty much guaranteed to fail (BMW M5 V10) without a rebuild at 60,000 miles?

I have been in maintenance just about all of my work life, much of it as a maintenance consultant to organizations trying to improve their reliability. In one job, I was engaged to provide the maintenance management system for a company building two large natural gas treating plants, as their contract with the owners of the plants required them to do this. So I got to spend a lot of time with the engineers who were the designers of the plants. And this is where the problem lies. Designers, as a general rule, have absolutely no idea what is required to carry out maintenance. They are tasked with creating the cheapest possible design that will fulfil the design brief. In this particular case, I was able to show them how they could reduce the cost of their design and also reduce the cost of ongoing maintenance. They were great people, and readily incorporated my suggestions, but without a maintenance person involved, the design would not have been as good, nor as easy to maintain. I suspect car design is exactly the same. I owned one car where you had to take the bumper bar off and remove the radiator to replace the alternator. Now you have to ask, what simple minded idiot does a design like that. I owned another where you had to remove an engine mount to replace the serpentine belt. Another priceless piece of stupidity by a designer. And finally, a big hiss to all the stupid European cars where you have to remove the timing belt to replace the thermostat. A job that takes 20 minutes in most other cars can take several hours in one of these car. It should be compulsory for all designers to spend time maintaining their designs. That might at least improve them somewhat.
