I agree with the Honda Civic choice, there are other options out there JDM-wise. This is a bit hard since you specified 4 seats. But still. Any first/second gen Subaru Impreza is around your price range, if you can get one cheap you can MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD which is always super fun. Look for a older BMW. There are some e39s out there (non m5's) and even some M5's (older than the e39 generation). BMW's are super fun especially some of the older ones. Smiles/Gallon > Miles/Gallon.
wwWOW. Two rather different cars. I like both. The 500 HP V10 sounds like what I would prefer. Right now I’m pushing an ’02 Q45 w/ 340 HP. The active dampening struts went out recently, and I replaced all 4 with BC Racing coil overs. I’ve also swapped the diff out, for a 350Z viscous LSD. I totally understand if you didn’t want to put the $$$ and busted knuckles into the M5. It takes a commitment. I would have kept the M though. Happy drives in the drop top. JDM for life!
Oohhh yes. I rubbed my hands with glee when I read this question - I immediately marked it for answering later since I was at work. Now that I'm home, I can properly elucidate my thoughts. This question is very personal to me. So let me start off by trying to explain my thought level with a few subjective words in this question... First up: What is a "supercar"? There is simply no way one can be objective about this: one of the answers simply says "Any Ferrari". To me, any car that goes above 250kmph with relative ease is a "supercar", and the rest of the machine is chosen from my own fancies. My fancies are sometimes big, long cars, and/or ones that have the ,right ,kind of engine. Not necessarily the most powerful, but the kind that I find as "f*cking cool". Objectively one could find arguments against these engines, saying some other one is better according to some technical specification, but as I said, this question is ,personal. ,The next word to be discussed is "best". What do you mean by "best" car? I know a lot of non-car guys who just find the Bugatti Veyron cool because it was the fastest car in the world. But when celebrities and the like can drive it, you understand it's not really ,hard ,to drive one. Best=fastest? You mean acceleration? Top speed? Fastest car around the Nordschleife? Some other track? I'm just going to ignore these questions and present my opinion. Let me start with the list then, here's hoping I can get to 10... I haven't really counted, and I'm typing this as I go along. EDIT: Forgot an engine so incredible I'm going to rank it as 0. Verdict for this one given before the actual description since this one is not up for argument. 0) TVR V12: Verdict: So f*cking cool I don't even know where to start. If you haven't heard of this engine... I don't really blame you. TVR's story, I find, is so incredibly inspiring that all I can do is wonder at the iron resolve of Peter Wheeler, the then-owner of TVR. Allow me to devote some space to an ode for this force of nature, this ,chemical engineer ,that simply got interested in sports cars and learnt how to make and race them. From Wikipedia: ,Evo Magazine,'s former editor Harry Metcalfe said of Wheeler:"Peter Wheeler was one of those larger-than-life characters I thought only existed in novels. He always seemed to excel at anything he turned his hand to, despite not always doing things the easy way. He might have been quietly spoken but he possessed formidable drive and incredible presence (being 6ft 6in tall helped here), qualities that helped him build TVR into what it was in its heyday." Speaking to ,CAR Magazine,, ,Ben Samuelson,, who worked with Wheeler for 12 years, said: "They were exciting, challenging and fantastic times. You never got bored – you didn’t know what was going to happen next! There were no committee meetings, he wasn’t a touchy-feely person, there were no group yoga sessions or anything; he was a proper boss." Another nibble: "His rivals were intrigued, but he kept them at arm's length, once declining an offer from Mercedes-Benz to do a month-long "product swap" of their respective products by saying: "When I need a taxi, I'll ring for one"." (Source: ,Peter Wheeler: Maverick car manufacturer who led TVR for a quarter of,). To the car, then: the TVR Speed 12. I can't even fathom what sort of non-privileged conditions this engine was created in, far away from the billions in cash that the bigger companies had. Yet it came into being, and how: the V12 engine for the car was an absolute monster. With a displacement of 7730cc, it made so much power that it reportedly ,snapped the input shaft ,of a dynamometer rated for 1000BHP. A single bank of cylinders was tested for 480BHP, theoretically thus giving a total output of 960BHP. ,Mad ,might be an understatement for that kind of power. Remember, this sort of power different from a Veyron making the same kind: it is a lot harder to control as the delivery isn't as smooth/controlled as a Veyron (which is a commodity, not a supercar). It wasn't meant to be driven by celebrities, it was meant to be driven by racers. And they did, and when TVR was finally going to put some into road-going production... Peter Wheeler drove the car on public roads and went: "This is way too powerful to produce." And they just didn't. Only one finished example is known to exist, allegedly detuned to "only" about 800BHP or so... I don't think the driver is going full throttle in the video above, but the point is the noise... If you want to know how it accelerates on full blast, I can only offer my experience of driving it in Gran Turismo, a racing simulation game: there's wheelspin in all of 3rd gear (shift up at 180kmph), and a small bit of 4th (till maybe 200 kmph). I came to know Peter Wheeler died in 2009; I had a strong urge to just write a letter to him, saluting him for the crazy stuff that got built under his control, right after I came to know about the Speed 12. Shame... This is magic. 1) BMW S85B50: Specially developed for the E60 M5 (the one which drew a lot of ire, being Chris Bangle's design), someone at BMW's M division was obviously thinking very, ,very ,ambitiously. A V10 engine for a saloon?? And we'll use it ,only ,for three models? (The E60 M5, E61 M5 Touring, and E63/64 M6.) Hell yeah! The gods that are the European engine designers, came up with a glorious answer to AMG. Just listen to this (even the first 30 seconds are enough): Before I fell in love out of sheer awe, I used to feel goosebumps on my nape on hearing this car. Japanese technical car show Best Motoring ran this one against cars like the Gallardo on a test track and it held its own. The gods did make a few mistakes though: the SMG trans can be a bit finicky, and rod bearings are known to fail a little prematurely, causing engine failure unless you read around and get to know beforehand, and get them changed. But if you can do that much, and keep changing the oil... The engine will go for at least 1,50,000km before needing a rebuild (based on what I've read from forums). A 5.0L V10 that revs to 8250RPM, with factory warranty!! To quote Keichii Tsuchiya from BMI: “I can't believe you can just buy this from a showroom.” Verdict: F*cking cool. 2) Toyota 1LR-GUE: Better known by the car it sits in, this engine wasn't even part of the original plan when the car was intended to be produced, when the first concepts were being thought of. Toyota's F1 gurus decided to put their efforts into making a new engine, for a car of which only 500 would be made (in the US, Toyota made owners eventually sign an agreement where dealers would buy back the car at fair market price or sticker price, whichever was lower, if you tried to sell it within first two years of ownership, to prevent owners from capitalising). This, is the Lexus LF-A. With a 4.8L V10 that makes 552BHP and revs to its redline (in neutral, of course) in 0.6s, this engine is as special and ,stark raving mad ,as they come. Cool facts: 1. The engine revs so quickly they couldn't use analog instruments. At 2:10 in the video above, you can see the two modes: the white dial is "sport" mode so the markings are brought closer together. The other one is for more relaxed driving (greater needle movement). 2. Yamaha manufactures the engine. I didn't even know they could pull something off on this scale! I’ve seen a documentary of the LF-A where they reveal (much to my disappointment, I was hoping to see it being made) that the engines come pre-built directly from Yamaha, to be put into the car. Then I found out Yamaha has made F1 engines too, so now I’m not so surprised… 3. Yamaha tweaked the acoustics ,specifically so that you could hear the engine noise in the car. ,How? Why, their musical instrument division, of course. Check this out: ,Yamaha Creates Acoustic Design for Engine of the Lexus LFA Super Sports Car. 4. The car was sold for US$3,75,000, way above even a Ferrari 599 GTB, when it launched. It had been a very expensive project, with changes along the way delaying it, and the creation of an entire engine just for the project adding to it. Toyota made a loss on every LF-A sold. 5. Yes, the redline starts at 9,000 RPM, with fuel cutoff scheduled for 9,500. Verdict: F*cking cool. 3) Mercedes M120 V12: The Mercedes S-Class, especially the older ones, was always a luxury car - I'm talking about the W140 model, when square lights were a thing. Then AMG did their thing and produced a V12; the production class car got a 6.0L V12 that was plenty powerful, making about 400BHP. But obviously that isn't ,cool ,enough for me; it's a fast and long, but not ,that ,exclusive. AMG then built a 7.0L V12 that made 520BHP. These were pretty rare with only 112 made to order (Wikipedia), and ,only in black. ,If you don't get how sinister and ,deadly ,that made this car look, take a look at this: In my imagination, this is the car I'd want to drive when I'm pushing 50 and preparing to let my son/daughter drive the E60 M5. Such a large and powerful engine on a car this big and long isn't ,necessary; ,it is ,desirable,, though. Just when I thought I couldn't want this old car any more than I already do, I found out something else: the 7.0L engine was enlarged to 7.3L and used in the ,Pagani Zonda. ,That's right, a luxo-barge engine was mildly redeveloped and put inside the more conventional idea of a "supercar". The cool bit? A very, very, ,very ,small number of those engines made their way into a few W140 S Class. ,From the factory. ,I don't know what could be more gangsta'. Verdict: F*cking cool. 4) Dodge Viper V10: For the engineer, for the racer, for the hard-core engine enthusiast, the Viper V10 isn't necessarily a favorite. Going by the kind of engineering involved in the above engines, this one is positively agricultural: the engine uses overhead valve technology that many engine designers would deem a decade too old, and despite sizing in at a stupidly large 8.3L, makes only about 550BHP or so (started out with 8.0L and 400BHP). The difference between this and the LF-A, despite the similar power figure, could not be more apparent: this is one ,lazy ,engine. Since it doesn't have all the high-tech materials and electronics used on the others, this one is a ,lot ,cheaper to buy, and I'm assuming to maintain as well. I like to think of this car/engine more as an extremely arrogant muscle car rather than a supercar; the engine is more suited in that sense, to cruising and constant speeds rather than the "why-isn't-it-7000-RPM-already" nature of the more developed/engineered engines in this answer. I like it because it isn't a car that coddles you; ,you ,must function on its terms. (I don't like the newest SRT10 with the "cool" headlights, I'm talking about older Vipers that came with close to no electronics, the pre-2013 ones.) Verdict: F*cking cool. 5) Mazda 787B's rotary: Everyone who opened up this question knows rotary engines. Or they should. Mazda's 787B won a Le Mans for the reason that would have others stumped, especially considering rotarys were considered more maintenance-intensive than more normal engines with pistons: it ,outlasted ,its closest competitors. Rotary engines rev with a freedom only the most advanced reciprocating engines (such as a few entries on this list) can. And oh dear god, the sound. The ,sound. THE SOUND. You only need watch from 5:05 to 5:25. The race pushed its driver back in the day to such limits that he was too exhausted to exit the car. Verdict: F*cking cool. 5) Honda F20C: Back when I was a kid, I used to play a lot of Gran Turismo on my PlayStation with my brother. I never knew why he liked the Honda S2000 so much - it handled nice, and was reasonably fast, but... it didn't have that "thing" I needed to consider a car special. I still don't know why he liked it, but I was amazed when I read up on the engine it had: a 2.0L straight 4 that developed ,246BHP ,(JDM). Here's something about engines: power density matters a lot. If you're producing 550BHP from a 8300cc engine, it isn't terribly efficient, but makes for a relaxed car (66BHP/litre). The F20C? 123.5BHP/litre. I've always found Honda very cool since they were one of the few manufacturers who made cheap cars that could actually be called "quality sportscars". The power density of the F20C engine was beaten only when the Ferrari 458 Italia launched much later: 124.5BHP/litre. Have a listen... From 1:50 onwards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0d/2002-Honda-F20C.ogg It's no supercar, but that doesn't make the engine less special. The fact that this one is actually pretty accessible if you're in a (relatively) First-World country is a bonus. Gotta love that VTEC, yo... Verdict: F*cking cool. 6) Porsche Carrera GT: I'll admit, my knowledge about this engine is pretty limited; it doesn't even come close to satisfying my inner geek like the others do. It is still a V10, and it still sounds the closest to an F1 car without actually sounding like one (I hate how F1 cars, old and new, sound: its just too sharp and they rev too quickly to enjoy properly). Watch any video of the CGT on YouTube and you'll hear for yourself. 5.7L V10 with over 600BHP on tap... Add the fact that it has a tricky transmission (the carbon ceramic clutch has a reputation for making the engine easy to stall) BUT IS A GOOD OL' MANUAL, and I'm sucked right in to the vortex of dreamland again. Want, want, want... Verdict: F*cking cool. 7) Mazda 20B: The RX-7 is well known for featuring blistering rotary engines, but did you know Mazda put a ,three-rotor setup in a luxury coupe? ,The RX-7 got only two for a max displacement of 1308cc. Considering that size nearly matched reciprocating piston engines more than double that size, the 1962cc unit inside the JC Cosmo isn't even meant to be raced. This was one of the last all-out efforts (besides the RX-8) that Mazda put into rotary engines. (In 1974 they nearly went bankrupt because they made a huge gamble on the rotary and it didn't pay off.) Verdict: F*cking cool, (Not all the JC Cosmos in the video are stock though, I think) This is all I have in mind for now. Like I said: these engines are by no means the best ever made (except for number 0 - I will simply ignore any negative comments about that one :P). But they come pretty close. BTW, I'm not a fan for increasing power density through forced induction - if you don't mind that, then certainly I would certainly nominate Koenigsegg's engines. Though I don't like them much, by no means are they anything less than engineering marvels.

Here’s my pick if I’m given the chance to pick one specific car in every country of origin: • USA: ,Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon What other vehicles from the land of the free and home of the brave represents the people’s patriotism to their country? There’s nothing else. It’s only this Jeep. It’s a modern successor to a war companion that have helped the US win against enemies during WW2. In post-war years, it symbolizes the American’s love for adventure and great outdoors. Runners Up: Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Bel Air, Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe, Dodge Charger/Challenger, RAM Trucks • Germany: ,Porsche 911 It doesn’t need further explanation. It’s the quintessential sports car, and is probably the most iconic rear-engine vehicle on the planet. The design may evolve over time, but the basic formula isn’t dying, and it’ll never be. Runners Up: BMW 3/5 Series, BMW M2/M3/M5, BMW 507, Mercedes Benz S-Class, Mercedes-AMG E63S Sedan/Station Wagon, VW Golf/Golf GTI, VW Scirocco • UK: ,MINI Cooper This little car is the best representation of everything British and 1960s pop culture. It’s the car that defies the notion that bigger is always better. Its simple charm makes it attractive to style-conscious drivers. Just like the Porsche 911, the basic formula is and will never die even though the design evolves over time. Huge thanks to BMW’s expertise in developing excellent driver’s cars, modern MINIs are more engaging to drive than ever before. Runners Up: Land Rover Defender/Range Rover, Jaguar F-Type, Triumph Spitfire • Italy: ,Ferrari Portofino I admit, there are way more better Italian cars out there. I just can’t deny the fact that this is one of the nicest grand tourers in the planet. It’s quite possibly one of the most stylish and elegant Ferraris that have ever existed in this world. Runners Up: Too many to mention. • Japan: ,A80 Toyota Supra Before explaining my choice, allow me to apologize to the subgroups of JDM fans who patronize other iconic Japanese cars like the Nissan GT-R, Honda/Acura NSX, Honda Civic Type-R, etc. We know the proven fact that the Toyota Supra (specifically the A80/Mk4 generation) has one of the most iconic engines ever. The 2JZ engine is so much tunable, it’ll even give the high-performance Italian supercars a run for their money., ,You might ask me about my impressions with regards to the A90/Mk5 Supra. Apparently, purists are a little bit skeptical from the fact that it’s a BMW Z4 with a different body. Come on guys! It’s too early to judge. Just give that baby a chance to shine. It depends on what you would consider to be a true “sports car” and how you wish to appropriate the $25k. Also don’t forget your can buy a lot of fun cars under $10k and then drop $15k worth of amazing mods and tuning to make something truly special and unique. Happy Hunting, keep the sportiest of driving on the track!
There’s no particular proper answer to this. Cars will always depreciate in value unless they are taken care of to an extreme extent. The cars that are taken care of are usually 90% perfect compared to how they came out of the factory. People baby these cars. Some good examples are the following… 2006 Ford GT Retail Price: $150,000 Current Resale Value: $400,000 This two door coupe made by Ford had nearly the exact same body as the ‘67 Ford GT. Not only was this car well made, however it was limited for the time and Ford GT’s have ONLY had production model years for 2004–2006, and 2020. Once again, all of the GTS made are in near perfect condition. 2. ,Volkswagen Golf R32 Retail Price: $30,000 Current Resale Price: $15,000-$60,000,+ The Volkswagen Golf R32 with the VR6 Engine was the worlds first production car with a Dual-Clutch Transmission. Currently in Canada, there is only 4 that exist for sale on Auto Trader. And none of them are the 03 model as pictured above. The models in Canada are one 05 model and 3 08 models. The 08 models have over 100,000 KM each and range from $15,000–18,000. The 05 Model has slightly over 30,000 KM and is nearly $60,000. This car is a one of a kind, and my favourite car of all time. Now I know you must be thinking. There’s way better cars out there that have held their value. However, I’m going towards this one because not many people know about this car. However, lower mile R32 Golfs have actually appreciated. 3. ,Nissan Skyline R32 Retail Price: ??? Resale Price: $20,000 - $200,000+ The Nissan Skyline R32 is a JDM legend. I couldn’t find the original retail price, however it’s on nearly every car guys favourites list. Between the RB26 engine, twin-turbo setup, 5-speed manual and the insane modifiability, this car is unbeaten. Some people prefer the R32, some prefer the R34, but the R32 and R34 and two of the best cars that have held their price overtime, and everybody wants one. Some Honourable Mentions These cars are still legendary and have held some great value, and if you have any cars to add, please do in the comments. These are just the first few that came to my head! Bugatti Chiron BMW E39 M5 Toyota Supra
