Yes if you think modifications are only gonna impress you because it has a lot of mods like the different types of grills, different mods of exhausts. If not you can go for other cars like skoda kodiaq, Bmw X1, Audi Q3, Mini Cooper Countryman, Volvo S60, Jaguar XE, Volvo XC40, Mercedes A Class etc ..
Vehicle: 2014 BMW X1 xDrive28i, premium package, fully loaded, 36 month lease. Dealership: Weatherford BMW, Berkeley, CA. Purchasing experience: Pretty good, but similar sales tactics in the F&I office. But most of those things they sold in there were worth it (wear and tear coverage, wheel and tire coverage, etc). Obviously this can vary by dealer. Service experience: Does not match the perception. BMW dealership service departments, at least where I lived, were booked weeks or even a month out, so it required advanced planning. Even with the onboard ‘request service appointment’ feature in iDrive. Technology: Somewhat matches the perception and marketing. iDrive has come a long way, and it is very nice to be able to remote-start or lock/unlock the vehicle by app if you forgot your keys in it, or you forgot where you parked and need that GPS location. The app was very clunky and reminded me of very early iOS apps from the days of the iPhone 3GS. Traffic-aware GPS was very useful. The “ultimate driving machine” - yes and no. Handling and responsiveness are certainly class-leading. However, ergonomics and driver comfort were way below even what is available in an economy car costing 1/4 the price. Long drives were tortuous and excruciating. It is not a good vehicle for people who have anything less than a perfect back/shoulder/neck condition, or who are sensitive to any kind of comfort issues. This was escalated all the way up to BMW corporate, who would not allow any recourse, and who even said that any modifications to the vehicle would void the entire warranty, due to issues with the wiring harness and airbag system connected to the seats, and that if service noticed anything that wasn’t stock in that area I would be held in violation of the lease AND lose all warranty coverage and have to buy out the vehicle. So, as far as ‘customer satisfaction’ and customer service with the product in North America - horrific. Cost a fortune to get out of the lease early and get into something else. This was after turning back in the original vehicle (base model X1 xdrive28i) and getting one with the ‘premium package’ with supposedly better seats and lumbar support….which had to have cost the dealer something, but also cost me an additional $6k on top of the original cost. I should have just gone all the way up to a 4- or 5-series, or a 3-series estate, as their ergonomics are far better. This is a problem not unique to BMW, because it is impossible to tell if a vehicle will be comfortable on long drives without actually taking it for a long drive (an hour or more), which most modern dealers won’t let you do. Performance: “EfficientDynamics” were kind of a misnomer. For a vehicle rated at 26MPG combined / 33 highway it ended up getting only 12–16mpg city - with a 4cyl 2.0 engine. Highway fuel economy was decent, but nothing to write home about and certainly nowhere near the EPA rating. Off-road: Very good for a crossover. Snow/ice performance: xDrive is useless on ice and snow due to horrific Bridgestone stock “all season” performance runflat tires. If you do ever need to lease a vehicle in an area that gets ice and snow, get the additional BMW wheel and tire package as an accessory and roll it into your lease. Would I repeat? Maybe. For a lease, I would have to demo the vehicle at least for an afternoon to make sure it fits my needs, or no deal, and lease all the accessories with the car. Or would have to do a purchase (possibly CPO) so I could do any aftermarket mods I wanted to do.
