Phillip T. Clark. He was also one of the main designers behind the Mustang. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Capri
It’s entirely a matter of taste. They were the European Mustang, cheaply made and cheap to buy. Ford built a V6 3-litre version that was good in its day. The vast majority were 1.6 four cylinder models that were neither exciting or charismatic but sported design details suggesting both. They are a blue collar classic, with a small but dedicated following. They have nothing like the almost universal love given to classic Beetles.
in many ways, the Capri was actually intended to be the European version of the Mustang. using the principles applied to the original Mustang (sporty styling, based on family saloon running gear etc to keep the price low) but on a scale better suited to european budgets (fuel costs etc) and road systems (smaller roads and generally more corner orientated). the Capri was, im fairly sure, a good amount lighter than the Mustang. it was also considerably smaller. with the exception of a handful of turbocharged exceptions (factory supplied special editions or ford backed dealer add ons) the most powerful Capris left the factory with 160bhp (2.8 injection versions) and the earlier 3.0, RS2600 and RS3100 had around 150bhp. all of these were V6 engines but you could get engines as small as a 1.3 4 cylinder. so the smaller, lighter Capri also had less power. BUT the biggest difference between it and its Mustang cousin was that, for the era it was designed/built, a Capri would also get around corners. now i have heard the rumours about how tail happy the Capris were, especially with the bigger engines, BUT they were either very early versions with 1960s handling technology OR driven by people who shouldnt have such a car. in fact i was considering purchasing a late 2.8 injection model which was fitted with a factory LSD and despite my best efforts (admittedly on a dry road) i couldnt even provoke the rear to even TWITCH in second gear! the biggest mistake i ever made was NOT buying that car BUT at the time it was too expensive for its condition. so basically, think of the Capri as the European Mustang but with an ability to corner as well as blast down a short straight section of road
Craigslist is your friend. Also try online auction sites such as bringatrailer. These sites have some great cars to choose from. Google and you will find many other auction sites. However, they would have some 'trailer queen' cars which would have astronomical prices. Depends on what kind of a car you are looking for. Check out eBay too. eBay and Craigslist have some great project cars which just need some love and could be transformed into masterpieces. Hope this helps. :)
It was sort of the European Mustang. A sexier body on a pedestrian chassis. Falcon here, Cortina (?) there. It sold really were here in the US, behind only the VW Bug. But then the exchange rate killed it by 1977. My roommate had a new 76. Ford made many versions for decades, some very fast! I’d love a 1972 V6/4speed Capri.
I didn’t know they ever made a Capri with a V4 engine! Straight fours, yes. Straight six yes. V engine? I don’t ever remember one and one of my colleagues collects Capris. The 3 litre Tickford was possibly a muscle car, if you could control the rather twitchy back end. Power is nothing without control. I do recall years back when he had the 2.8i and I had just acquired a Porsche 924 (2 litre VW-based model). They had just built a new road near where we worked on the outskirts of Southampton which wasn’t officially opened at that point, but was accessible. We decided to go for a bit of a race one lunchtime. The Capri had a good chunk more power but the 924 had such better handling that it was an easy win.
You should assume that it does and take appropriate precautions when working on the bodywork. Lead paints are still widely used in industrial applications (including automobile finishes) and laws restricting its use vary widely. While use of lead based paint in residential applications was restricted in 1978 in the US, industrial use is still widely unregulated.
The ,Ford Capri, was produced from 1968 until 1986. Consequently, a ,1964 ,Ford Capri would be a figment of the imagination and likely to have a top speed of approximately zero. Over the years the Capri was built with a wide range of engines. The smallest was the 4-cylinder 1.3 litre crossflow engine which would have given the car just about enough power to get out of its own way. On a good day. A variety of other engines, up to a 3-litre V6 engines were also fitted to Capris, and in the later years a 2.8 litre fuel-injected engine gave a top speed of about 210 km/h (130 mph.)
