ford earthroamer Q&A Review

Which car would you choose if you could pick any car for a road trip to anywhere in the world? Where would you go?

I would go everywhere and anywhere. Especially unimproved roads. Probably start with the west coast of the Americas. And then if the bug is still with me, then cross over from Chili to Argentina and circle around the east coast and finally cross over the northern part of Canada. And then cross the ocean to Europe and go from there. The EarthRoamer is luxury all terrain camper truck build like a high end carbon fiber sailboat on a modified Ford F550 chassis. Fully self contained with massive solar array and extra large fuel and water capacity. LTi - EarthRoamer

There is a zombie apocalypse or something like that happens and You have to drive for survival don't know what would you be up against, Which vehicle would you choose. Car or bike and why?

Its simple for me , I would pick the EarthRoamer XV-LTS Simple reason its living offroad house. Its based on Ford F550 and the above stuff is just basic you can customize anyway you like.

What are your favorite truck and bus models?

There are far too many trucks on my list to choose one as a favorite so I’ll list my top 5, in no particular order. An Earthroamer Toyota BJ70 Ford F450 Early 90s dodge diesel Ford Excursion If I ever win the lottery, I”ll have one of each of these. Actually, I already have an Excursion, so 4 to go.

What is your adventure car choice for exploring US wilderness and winter mountains, especially Washington?

I’d get a turbo diesel Ford Excursion. I”d put a small lift on it, a winch bumper, locking differentials, aggressive tires and add a lot of interior features and convenience items for extensive use off pavement for camping and survival. That would be my affordable choice. Excursions have tons of room inside and being turbo diesel, they get good gas mileage. You can even put a mattress in the rear cargo area and sleep! My money is no object choice would be an Earthroamer. self contained , turbo diesel power, the Earthroamer will take you anywhere for weeks of fun away from civilization.

What is your favorite car and why?

I’ve skipped over this question several times in the last few days as it came up in my feed but I finally decided to answer it, maybe because my subconscious finally came up with 5 vehicles I’d want. It’s very stressful trying to determine exactly which 5 of the dozens of awesome machines out there I’d choose! So without further ado, here are my choices, in no particular order. First, an Earthroamer overland camper. Fully self contained and able to travel just about anywhere it can fit. A Canyonstar 3920 Toyhauler. That way I can camp in comfort and haul my off road toys (those will follow). A rockbouncer for hard core off roading. Mustang GT 350R Lastly, something to drive when the Mustang isn’t practical, a Ford F250 turbodiesel. 5 vehicles really isn’t enough to satisfy me, I still need a powerful sedan like the Cadillac CTSV modified by Hennessy for even more power. and a smaller off road vehicle like a Can Am Maverick X3 turbo. There you have it, my 5 top choices in vehicles, hopefully not as boring and predictable as the usual supercar and Eurotrash choices!

Are there any hybrid pick-up trucks available in the US market?

For all my loyal fans: I’m trying to keep this article up-to-date, but things are moving fast in pickup land! First of all, it’s worth noting that hybrids are a short-term transitional technology, so in the long-term, nobody’s going to bother offering them. Ford and several other manufacturers are already starting to cull the hybrids from their lineup. They’re unnecessarily complex, and don’t really solve any real-world problems for any significant number of buyers. So I’ll list both the hybrids and the normal full-electric trucks here. Of the major manufacturers, the ,2019 Dodge Ram 1500, is a 48V mild hybrid, and the ,2020 Ford F-150, is hybrid, But, like I said, those hybrids have been in the pipeline for a long time, and I wouldn’t expect them to last very long, since full-electric is crowding right along behind. Ford’s ,full-electric, is hot on their heels. Ford has released a teaser showing their full-electric F-150 ,towing a 1m lb train,. GM has bumped the release of their ,full-electric Silverado and equivalent GMC, out one more year to 2021, and boy are they ugly! There was also a 2009–2014 Chevy Silverado Hybrid (thanks for pointing that out, Darin) and some of the best new EV motor development was done for the hybrid version of the Escalade. Fiat/Chrysler, a day late and a dollar short, have finally (Oct 28, 2020) announced that there will be an electric Dodge Ram, but have not specified a date. The ,XL Hybrids F150 and F250, are supposed to be available right now, in 2wd and 4wd, though apparently only to large fleet purchasers. And they’re pretty mild hybrids, like the Via Motors ones. The ,Tesla Cybertruck, is now orderable, in three trims. The low-end is RWD, 250 miles range, 7,500 lbs towing, for $39K. Mid-range is 4WD / two motor, 300 miles range, 10,000 lbs towing, for $49K. High-end is 4WD / three motor, 500 miles range, 14,000 lbs towing, for $69K, but delivery is one more year out. The styling on this truck is, uh, polarizing. Some people love it, others hate it, but at least you won’t look like another F150. And there are some really nice features… The active air suspension carries over from the Model X, with eight inches of travel. There’s a rigid tonneau that you can supposedly walk on. And the tailgate extends to a loading ramp, all the way to the ground. Maybe some of those features won’t be completely ironed out by first ship data, a la the falcon wing doors, but who knows? Maybe Tesla will be tougher on their suppliers and get something that works right on the first try, despite being new and tricky. Fisker accidentally tweeted about his ,Alaska pickup,, thought to be a pickup version of the ,Ocean, SUV, so it would most likely share its 4x4 and 300hp specs, and might be available in the cool ,Force E, trim. Fisker is an excellent designer, but doesn’t have the greatest track-record of building stable companies. The ,Lordstown Endurance/Workhorse W-15, is reservable now at $52,500, but not actually shipping yet. And the Lordstown renders (above) look way better than the early Workhorse prototypes (below) did. Notably, they own a 10% stake in ,just bought a shuttered GM plant for the purpose of building electric pickups,. The truck is supposed to have a 200 mile range, top speed of 80mph, 600 hp, 6,000-lb. towing capacity, and a pack of about 75kWh. On the other hand, it’s also supposed to use four hub-motors, so all this may be a pipe-dream. UPDATE: Workhorse says they’ve ,dropped their pickup line, to focus on delivery vehicles… So I guess this means a split, and Lordstown is a completely separate entity? More update: Yep, and ,Lordstown has announced, that they’re using ,Elaphe wheel-motors,. The ,Bollinger B1, is more in the Bronco segment than the pickup segment, but is orderable now for relatively-near-future delivery. The ,Bollinger B2, is, essentially, a long-bed crew-cab version of the B1, reminiscent of the old long-bed Toyota FJ Cruisers. Like the B1, you can pay now, but you won’t get it for a while. Very unlikely to be vaporware, though, in my estimation. Both the B1 and B2 are priced at $125k. Bollinger has also now announced ,regular and crew chassis-cabs,! We know the next chassis-of-choice for ,EarthRoamer, now. :-) The ,Rivian R1T, has a patent for a very modular design, and is available in a three-row SUV on the same skateboard. The truck version has a full-width equipment locker behind the second row doors. Rivian is now owned by Amazon and Ford, and has bought an old Mitsubishi assembly plant, so they’re a pretty going concern. One of my favorite would-be truck builders is ,Neuron,, who have an excellent sense of design… Pictured above are the ,Met, (left) and super-cute ,Star, (right), and they have some other interesting ideas around mass transit and ISO-container-size skateboard platforms. Oop! Update, ,Neuron’s now shown some real steel,, the T/One. And they showed a Torq semi as well. The ,Havelaar Bison, was announced in May, 2017, two prototypes were built, and it was reservable at that time against a $52k list price, but is no longer featured on Havelaar’s web site as of late 2019. Bob Lutz’s ,Via Motors, was supposed to be doing pickups, but they’re actually selling vans right now. Presumably they’ll get the pickups out eventually. They’re just throwing hybrid drivetrains into Chevy trucks. Speaking of GM, the ill-fated ,Hummer, brand is nominally back in play, in both SUV and pickup variants, announced for fall of 2021. They’re trying for 400 miles of range, but that’s at the cost of a 200KWh traction pack, and it’ll take 1,000 hp to lug all that around. A full reveal is scheduled for May 20, 2020, and it’ll be one of the many products coming out of GM’s newly-refitted all-EV Hamtramck plant. There’s the ,Nikola Badger,, nominally slated for September 2020 release, with a 300-mile battery range, and an optional serial-hybrid fuel-cell range-extender for another 300 miles after that. 455 hp., 4wd, 8,000 lb. towing capacity. Then there’s the ,Atlis XT,, which, so far, is definitely vapor. Last I knew, they hadn’t raised the minimum stakes to build a single prototype. Honorable mention (because an SUV rather than pickup) in the sketchy-vaporware category is the ,Triton Model H,, recently (April 2020) announced, which appears to be aimed squarely at the Suburban / Expedition category. 200kWh pack, claimed 700 mile range (which seems difficult to pull off, at that weight), 4wd, 1500 hp, 130-inch wheelbase. If you’re into sketchy vaporware, you’re welcome to wire these guys $140k for a place in line. The Lifan Pickman is available in the US now, costs less than $8k, and has developed a vocal fan-base among those who like their trucks small and practical. No power windows here, but it is available with normal locking doors. A cool feature is that the bed sides are drop-down on all three sides, if you need a flatbed. FWIW, Lifan is actually a very large manufacturer of mainstream sedans and vans and trucks in China; this is atypical for them, and it’s the only thing they’re selling in the US. ,Cheaper clones, from ,smaller manufacturers, cost as little as $3k, though that may be FOB or EXW. In the “real, but not available in the US yet” category, there’s the ,Nissan Rich 6,, which looks pretty reasonable (250 mile range, half-ton, crew cab) but is currently only available in China. Technically, this is the first full-size, mass-market electric pickup from a major manufacturer, beating Ford, Chevy, and Tesla to market. Meanwhile, if you want to try to homologate something yourself and are looking for a bargain, there are literally hundreds of electric pickup models available on Alibaba. Many are very compact and utilitarian, others (like the Ningbo Berzon Hida pictured above) are pretty normal looking. If you want to look at historical models as well, there was the ,Ford Ranger EV,, available from 1998 through 2002. And the ,Chevy S10 EV,, available in 1997 and 1998. There are also ,egregious vaporware crowdfunding projects,, and scams galore.

Are Ford F650's put to good use or are they just used to show off?

I was chief engineer for the generation of Ford medium duties that were built in the Blue Diamond JV between Ford and Navistar. My team planned and helped engineer and develop this truck family. While I was not involved in the present generation of medium duties now assembled directly by Ford I have a very good understanding of the product line and its applications, so this answer reflects uses of the truck family going back many years. A very large percentage of medium duty trucks are sold into four application categories: Van body, including refrigerated vans. For example Ford F-650s are being manufactured in great volume for U-Haul van body rental. Platform bodies, including wrecker-retrievers, farm trucks with grain sides, and so on. Some of these have hoists, cranes, and/or winches. Dump bodies, including the hybrid landscaper body, which has both service body compartments and a dump bed. Service bodies, which include those with equipment such as digger derricks used by utility companies. There are a large number of other applications, such as Propane tanker, beverage truck and tractor, RV puller, drilling rigs, etc. The question posed seems to imply that the questioner noticed some of the more “exotic” applications which are often striking, such as the ,EarthRoamer, conversion: These are not mainstream applications of the Ford medium duty series. However, they do illustrate the range of applications they are able to fit. The more mundane look like this F-750 with Propane delivery tank equipment, powered by a Propane-fueled Ford V10 engine: Or this F-750 utility truck with aerial bucket lift; these operated by DTE are powered by a variety of Ford gasoline, diesel, and CNG engines: And finally, the ubiquitous F-650 wrecker-retriever. Very specific planning decisions were made to insure Ford owned this market: Ford F-650 and F-750 series trucks are primarily used in demanding applications requiring reliability, durability, and productivity. They are mostly not “toys” - but if you can afford to make a toy of one, it would be “tons of fun” to play with.

What pickups does John Mayer use?

This article states that his EarthRoamer XV-LTS is based on the Ford F-550 chassis, with a Power Stroke V8 engine. ,Musician John Mayer Shows Off His Beastly EarthRoamer

What car would you take for a road trip across the USA?

If money is no object, I'd drive something like this Mercedes Unimog: Go anywhere capability, comfortable, able to camp anywhere as it's fully self contained, and great for exploring back country areas. I'm not much for cities, so I'd spend more time out in the wilderness than driving through cities. In fact, i'd try to take as many dirt roads as possible for the entire trip. If not the Unimog, then this Ford diesel pickup based Earthroamer: Same idea as the Unimog, just a little bit smaller.
