My parents run a farming business including cattle and mixed grains. I am so thankful for my childhood exposure to agriculture, which included operational planning, asset management, financial analysis, risk versus rewards, and yes - rolling up my sleeves and getting my hands very, very dirty (don’t ask, don’t tell). (Not me in this picture, but thought it was a great representation of a farm kid!) So I say BRAVO to introducing the younger generation to the world of entrepreneurship. It is a gift that will last a lifetime. Before we get to the how, ,let’s start with the why,. Per, ,Investopedia,: An Entrepreneur is an individual who, rather than working as an employee, runs a small business and assumes all the risks and rewards of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes. Entrepreneurs play a key role in any economy. These are the people who have the skills and initiative necessary to take good new ideas to market and to make the right decisions that lead to profitability. The reward for taking the risk is the potential economic profits the entrepreneur could earn. In the scenario where you introduce a young person to entrepreneurship, ,the goal is to have a brilliant learning experience versus financial necessity,. There are many probable, positive outcomes. Life Skills Gained,: There are many skills to be tried and exercised as an entrepreneur, all of which are incorporated into life and business or where ever your career takes you. Resiliency., No one is immune to life’s challenges and the practice of recovering from disruptive change is a valuable lesson early on. Financials Planning. ,Understanding financial basics in business will lend to understanding of personal finance and beyond. Selling and Marketing., No matter who you are, the art of sales and marketing is an absolute asset. Whether you are interviewing for a company or working to get your own clients, the more you practice, the more you will achieve. Intrapreneurship Prepared. ,Skills learned as an entrepreneur directly correlate to future success of a intrapreneur, every CEO’s most valued asset. An intrapreneur acts like an entrepreneur within a company and is usually a resourceful, action-oriented, intelligent risk taker who acts within the boundaries of the organization. Should the career path lead outside of entrepreneurship, all experience learned early on will not go to waste. Trends Adapted., With the world economies as they are, entrepreneurship and contract employment is on the rise. Outsourcing is the answer for companies in uncertain times, while work-life balance is the answer for many temporary workers. In many cases, the jobs are just not available. To raise a child to be equipped to work in any scenario, to be resourceful to and provide for themselves is essentially a survival skill. Now, for how to get the younger generation interested in entrepreneurship. ,In my life scenario, is is my family’s livelihood to be entrepreneurial farmers. Although, sending a young person to work on a farm would be a ,brilliant, life experience, here are some other suggestions of introducing one to the world of entrepreneurship: Role Models,. This will embarrassingly date myself, but some of my childhood fictional heroes included ,The Babysitters Club,. The stories were about a group of girls who ran a club and had “exciting” baby-sitting adventures. They had a private phone line, they had a schedule, they got paid, they even managed some expenses. The girl-nerd in me loved them to the point I forced my little sisters to participate in many clubs of my creation. For young people, what grabs their attention? Who could grab their attention? Here are some possible resources: Books,. ,Brightly ,recommends reads for various age groups, including 8–12 year old. This includes books like ,Billy Sure Kid Entrepreneur, by Luke Sharpe, ,Grace Stirs It Up, by Mary Casanova, and ,The Making of a Young Entrepreneur: The Kid’s Guide to Developing the Mind-Set for Success, ,by Gabrielle Williams. Movies,. There is a documentary called ,The Startup Kids, that may be worth checking out. The kids are older then 12, but it may spark some interest. Young Role Models., There are many young entrepreneur examples that are making the news, including 9 charmers on ,Business News Daily,. Adult Role Models., There are also many adult entrepreneur virtual role models that can be introduced like ,Andrew Ca,r,negie, or ,Henry Ford,. A Familiar., Who do you know in real life that could help with the introduction to entrepreneurship? Of course the best role model, will always be you. ,(Wink!) (I know, right??) Skills and Interests,. My interests growing up were in sports, music, and travel. My skills were more business’y in nature. Thus, I gravitated towards a career in global business balanced with a life of sports and music. Assess,. This same reflection process applies to everyone, including the younger generation. What are their likes? What do they gravitate to? What are their interests? The writer may be interested in freelancing, while the jock may be interested in lawn maintenance. By exploring a beloved activity together, the more likely it will stick. It can be reinforced by making some extra spending money. It can be anything,. You can even make video games an entrepreneurial pursuit. Felix Kjellberg (aka ,PewDiePie,) made his millions playing games on YouTube. When the goal is a learning experience, there is much that can be learned from replicating parts of his business model. It’s all in the name of fun! Collaboration,. The most important part is to work with you child, in order to set them up for success. Again the primary goal is to have a learning experience, so: Brainstorm ideas., Again, reflect on their skills and interest. What type of businesses would they enjoy most? Baby-sitting or pet-sitting business Online store Lawn care Freelancing Arts and Crafts Running errands Cleaning services (I did this one too, when I was 12 years old in fact!) Open a bank account,. Nothing gets is more incentivizing them with the possibility of making some bucks. Make a plan., I intentionally did not include the word “business” in the plan part, as it needn’t be complicated. The ,$100 Start-up, has a very simple one-pager that will serve the purpose. This will also include establishing a budget, which may or may not include some upfront investment from mom and dad. Be supportive,. There will be ups and downs, including some moments when motivation will be lacking. However, by being there for you child and guiding them through the tough moments, you will show them a path of recovery for all future life hardships. Exploring entrepreneurship with your child is the greatest gift, as I can testify from experience. I didn’t always appreciate it at the time, but I am super thankful now. And yes, I still go home to get my hands dirty. It’s the best. Enjoy the journey! ***** Final note: Please, always vet resources before sharing them with your child, including resources in this answer. You know what’s best and appropriate for your child, as everyone is different.
