They’ve actually already addressed this in the show. The hosts are built with something they called the “Good Samaritan Reflex”. When a guest tries to hurt another guest the hosts automatically respond to stop the threat. It’s just a reflex in them that they can’t control. You actually get to see what they were talking about in episode 5 when Teddy protects Ford from the MiB. Ford actually didn’t make Teddy do that. Teddy’s “Good Samaritan Reflex” did.
Why are some knives banned when guns aren’t? The most deadly knife isn’t as dangerous as the least deadly gun. Years ago, one of the knife magazines had an article, citing an incident which was pivotal in getting Switch Blade knives banned in many states across the United States. The incident is so full of irony, and the response was so full of emotion without thought that it’s an excellent parallel to what’s going on with gun control legislation. Let’s go back to the period following World War II, when there was a concern regarding juvenile delinquents. An incident here, and incident there, the broken glass bottle thrown at a woman holding a baby, killing the baby was one of the incidents cited, over and over again about out of control, dangerous youths. We’re getting into the Rebel Without a Cause era. So a shocking bit of news comes out that a juvenile killed a hard working man in Portland, Oregon with a switch blade. That story made HUGE news. Yes, one of those killer juveniles took out a hard working man, with a switch blade. Then the case went to court and for several reasons, the media dropped it. It has to do with predatory homosexual activity, not something they wanted to cover in the 1950’s. It turns out a juvenile was fascinated with ships, and the idea of traveling and seeking adventure, from port to port, and he was known for asking sailors about the merchant marine, about sea travel. An older male invited him aboard one of the ships and the youth readily accepted, being told he’d be given a tour of the ship. Instead, the predatory homosexual lured him into his cabin on the nearly empty ship and began sexually assaulting the kid. The man was much stronger, and the kid was pinned and he had just one hand free, and he used it to stab his aspiring rapist. Well, that was a fortunate stab for him, but he was arrested. The media frenzy commenced. In court he was cleared, the story was proven true, but the media certainly did NOT want to deal with this story and it was dropped. But emotions ruled in many areas, and the fools banned switch blade knives, which in this case, proved to be precisely what the kid needed, a rapidly opening knife, that opened with one hand. In another irony, Oregon, where the story took place, and where legislators KNEW the real story, did NOT ban switch blade knives!
This is not specific to any country’s laws. ,In General:, The law does not allow you to engage in a fight to the death, nor to engage in a fight in which a serious injury might occur. Duelling is illegal. It would depend therefore on whether or not you could have avoided the fight or whether Person A had got Person B backed up against a wall and basically indicated that if Person B did not defend himself he would kill him anyway. I suspect that cases like this would depend on a District Attorney and a Jury to decide. I have always personally liked the knife fight between Butch Cassidy and Harvey in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.
LoI don’t know how old your students are, so you will have to decide what you want to share. As a young unmarried man, with a normal high libido, Lincoln once went to see a prostitute. As he undressed, he asked her how much she charged. $5 she answered. He said he only had $2. She said, “Just forget it. You can pay me the rest later.” He said he would not buy on credit. He got dressed and left. Lincoln and His son Robert took a walk one Sunday afternoon on the railroad tracks outside Springfield. At a certain point, Lincoln told his son, “Years ago, I surveyed those woods for client-n-so. If you were to go 100 yards in that direction (pointing), you would find a stake I drove beside an oak tree to mark a point of the survey.” Robert said he didn’t believe him. Lincoln said, follow me. He proceeded to take Robert to the exact place where the stake still stood. Lincoln studied the native language of Robert Burns, his favorite poet, and could recite Burns’poetry in the native Scots lallans language. Lincoln’s horse’s name was Bob. Lincoln would loan most anything, but not Bob. Bob accompanied Lincoln’s body in his funeral procession to the grave in Springfield. Lincoln had seen John Wilkes Booth act many times. Once, after a play, he sent word to Booth he would like to meet him. Booth refused. Lincoln wore size 14 boots. The night Lincoln was assassinated, he had in his pocket a 6-bladed Congress-style, pearl handled pocket knife, a gift from the G.K. Chesterton Knife Company in Philadelphia, along with $5 in Confederate money. When Lincoln was first elected President, he was so informed while he was playing baseball. Lincoln’s best friend was Joshua Speed. They slept together in the same bed for 4 years. The arrangement began when Lincoln asked Speed if he could help him find a place to live, but said he had no money. Speed invited him to live with him. Lincoln was always reading every moment he could spare. Lincoln was the first President to give direct orders to his generals in the field, via telegraph.
One spring I split a hive. I didn’t bother to locate the queen, I just made sure both hives had plenty of eggs, as I knew that the one without a queen would nurture a new queen as soon as an egg hatched into a larva. It takes a queen 15–16 days to emerge from her cell, so after a couple of weeks I went to check my hives to make sure they both had a queen. In the first one I opened I found a number of queen cells on the frames (they are large and look like a peanut shell just stuck on the surface of the frame). When she emerges, the queen chews around the edge of the cell cap and it hangs open similar to what a tin can looks like when opened but with the lid not separated from from the can. I found some like that, and some which still contained a metamorphasizing queen, dead. When the queens emerged they fought until one remained, and the she went around stinging the remaining developing queens through the cell walls so they would not subsequently emerge and challenge her reign. I decided to clean the queen cells off the frames with my knife, so I methodically pulled each frame and sliced the cells off the surface of the frame. As I worked through the 4 boxes I counted 17 queen cells (10 frames per box). The last one I found was the only one in that bottom box. As it was intact, I expected to find a dead, metamorphasizing queen in it. As soon as my knife opened the cell a fully formed queen emerged, running manically searching for the other queen whose pheromones she sensed. I quickly reassembled the hive and left them to work it out. Three years later that is still my strongest hive!
Trying to help a girl being beat by her boyfriend. I was in West Virginia for a job with Verizon on summer break from school. I’m outside my hotel when I see this chick with bloody, long blond hair. Shes crying loudly and I ask her if shes ok and she said she'd been assaulted. She was bleading from her head. I told her Im going to call 911 for her, as I start walking to the phone this skinny shirtless guy walks out all puffed up. He's yelling incoherently at us (I was only 19 fresh out of New york and I barely understood a word of anybody with a thick southern accent). He says “Bitch, I told you no fucking mayo. Who’s this, your new boyfriend?” Clearly this dude was not 100% there. I told her walk with me to the lobby and they’ll call 911. He yells “don’t turn you back to me bitch” and hits her in the back of the head, she falls. I immediately elbow him in the chest. He steps back and coughs. This dude then tries to rush me and I kick his ass square in the chest and he falls again. At this point I’m shaking because the adrenaline is hitting my system. The chick then screams “Noooo" and runs to help the guy. She says “You leave him alone", then she starts screaming a blood curdling “HELP!!!”. At this point I’m realizing how ,Black, I am., I just kicked a White guy to the ground and his woman's bloody., She would probably say I hit her. I start to quickly walk away, but the guy gets up and follows me. At this point one of the older guys from the job comes out of his room and steps foward and ask me if I’m ok. He then says its ok I got your back. We both start walking back to the rooms. The crazy guys still yelling “Ill kick both your asses.” He then pulls a knife. My co-worker says enough of this. He walks up to the crazy guy and says stand back and leave. The crazy guys still walking towards us with a knife. My coworker then pulls out his pistol and just stands there. The crazy guy folds away his knife and scampers back to his hotel suit. After this incident I vowed NEVER to help anyone like that again unless its a child or elderly person. I will never help anybody in that situation again. I’ll elicit other people to help or call 911 instead.
I suspect other productions didn’t include all three of Lucy’s suitors because they wanted to simplify a rather complicated story. As mentioned in another answer, the BBC miniseries with Louis Jourdan makes the best attempt at following the novel faithfully, aside from merging Quincey with Arthur rather than including both along with Dr. Seward.
No. Not at all! Under the law, it’s only justified and constitutes self defense if you’re actually attempting to end the threat as its actually occurring, or in imminent danger of occurring such as the assailant charging towards you while holding the knife. Otherwise, its just two people both being charged with some degree of assault or worse.
I worked with a guy who bought a brand new ford F150 pickup. on the freeway going home he was behind a truck carrying glass panels. one of the panels flew off the side rack, flipped into the air, came down and sliced the front end off of the truck at the core support. cut it right off like a knife. when it was towed back to the dealer, they couldn’t believe what they were looking at. fortunately, the insurance company replaced the truck without a problem. the glass truck was never found and probably only noticed the missing panel when they got to where ever they were going.
