The Brazilian engine - the 6.6 and 7.8 inline six engines before they introduced the Cummins 6BT and 8.3 for the F-Series Super Duty. Those were absolute piles of shit. I’m not going to mention the 6.0 or 6.4 Powerstroke (of which the 6.4 was definitely the worse), because they’re not Ford engines… they’re Navistar engines… Ford didn’t use an indigenous diesel in its pickups until the 6.7 Scorpion. The 6.4 Powerstroke was the MaxxForce 7, the 6.0 Powerstroke was the VT365, the 4.6 liter used in the Ford LCF (which was a 6.0 PSD/VT365 minus two cylinders) was the VT275, the 7.3 PSD was the T444/T444E, and Ford didn’t badge engineer the engines before that point, having used the Navistar 7.3 IDI and 6.9 IDI before rebranding the T444E as the Ford Powerstroke. Engines which were exclusive to the European market, I really don’t know anything about those, so this is going to be a US-centric answer.
Without a doubt, EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI, usually the last week in July (Monday-Sunday). EAA has held its annual fly-in since 1953; first at Timmerman airport in Milwaukee, then 1959–1969 at Rockford, and since 1970 in Oshkosh. It is by far the largest airshow in the world and one of the largest gatherings of any kind. During the show, the Wittman Regional Airport becomes not only the busiest airport in the world, landing and departing more aircraft in the 9 hours it is open for non-airshow operations than the other-busiest airport Atlanta Hartsfield does in 24 hours, it becomes the third-largest city in the state of Wisconsin. Generally, over 600,000 people and 10,000 airplanes visit the show each year. Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better, but in this case it is. The best and brightest in the aviation industry give lectures and workshops; you can get rides in a Ford Trimotor, B-17, helicopter, and others; the best airshow performers in the world will show their stuff; thousands of exhibitors showcase their wares and there are airplanes everywhere, both on the ground and in the sky. You want to see aircraft? They’re all here. Vintage warbirds like Corsairs and P-51s are there by the dozens, though there are dozens of other types of warbirds as well. Cessnas, Pipers, and other more common aircraft show up by the thousands. Vintage aircraft are well represented, and you’ll see dozens (each) of Stinsons, Wacos, Swifts, Fairchilds, and others. You’ll see types you’ll rarely see anywhere else like Meyers, Anderson-Greenwood AG-14, Boeing 40, Beech Starship, Rutan Boomerang (and other Rutan one-offs), Grumman seaplanes. They’ll range in size from foot-launched ultralights all the way up to the Airbus A380 and Boeing LCF Dreamlifter. This year, I’m looking forward to seeing one of the two Martin Mars seaplane firebombers. Oh, airplanes not your thing? There’s also helicopters, balloons, gyrocopters, the Goodyear Blimp, powered parachutes, if it flies, it’s there. Basically, there is something for everyone at Airventure, no matter what segment of aviation you love; if you love all of it, the sheer size of it will blow your mind and hurt your neck from whipping it around to look at what awesome aircraft is making that noise… It’s as close to heaven on earth as there is; this will be my 12th year in a row of camping on the field for the entire week. As cool as all the aircraft are, the people are even cooler and some of my favorite people are the friends I see once a year at Oshkosh. Camping on the field is the best way to maximize my time with them and the best way to get the most out of the show; I wake up every morning to the sound of the Trimotor taking off, gorge myself on aviation all day, hang out with great friends at night, fall asleep and dream about airplanes only to wake up once again to a reality that’s better than my dreams. I think it would take 6–8 weeks to see it all, and I wish I could live it year round, but alas, we’re only allowed one week a year. If you have any aviation enthusiast in you, Oshkosh is a must-see that should be on your bucket list - And I hope to see you there!
