Being raised in Dallas my favorite areas would be in East Dallas. White Rock lake. Drive down Swiss Ave in the Lakewood area to almost downtown and look at the historic homes. Baylor Hospital on Gaston Ave hand museum. Arboretum near White Rock. Maybe the Trinity area. Some eclectic, historical areas in Oak Cliff.
I’ve always chuckled at the “Empire State of the South” moniker and wonder what prompted that. I’m told it was because Georgia is the largest state by landmass east of the Mississippi and it has a very diverse and robust economy. OK…whatever. I’ve been to New York City and New York State and the comparison is rather laughable. As for comparing ATL to Detroit I’m not sure if that’s serious, what you mean by the comparison or perhaps its just a tad racist? Atlanta did indeed have automobile manufacturing…Ford assembled Model T’s at a plant on Ponce De Leon, there was even a home-grown brand, Hanson Motors from 1917 to 1924, and GM had a factory at both Lakewood and later up in Doraville. Ford also had a large plant down in Hapeville but Ford and GM pulled the plug on those operations about a decade ago and now the nearest automobile factories are Kia over in La Grange, Mercedes in Alabama and BMW in South Carolina. I know Trump got into a twitter war with Congressman John Lewis about his congressional district being mired in poverty, but I can assure you Trump doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Yes, some of Lewis’s district includes poorer neighborhoods, but also some of the most expensive neighborhoods in town. If you think by connection ATL is a city in terminal decline with whole sections of town abandoned like Detroit or headed in that direction, I would say you are sadly mistaken.
Have you ever said something to a car salesman that left him speechless? I called him a damn liar to his face, and said he had no reason to make up such a stupid lie, and he wasted my time and I did this in front of other salesmen, customers and the sales manager, then I stood there and explained the lie he told. Ford. My family had purchased Ford pick-ups for decades. We sold the Ford F-150 and decided we wanted a smaller Ford pick-up truck and went to a Ford dealership on South Tacoma Way, in Lakewood/Tacoma. So we were walking around the lot, and a salesman came up and said he could get us a current new Ford pick-up truck with lots of accessories for $18,000. [I don’t want to keep writing NEW, as we buy NEW vehicles, so just assume that’s what we’re talking about and the parameters of a potential purchase.] Even though this was a while ago, that was outrageously low! He was steering us toward F-150’s, and we’d been shopping for a smaller truck, but an F-150 for $18,000 back then would be incredible. So he keeps showing us pick-up after pick-up and none of them are even close to $18,000, so I told him to get us straight to an $18,000 pick-up truck. He guides us into the dealership and I figure he’s going to call up an inventory sheet, or find one in a related dealer or distributor, he comes back with some brochures. I told him to cut the crap, I wanted to see the $18,000 pick-up. He opens his hands and says “Well, to be honest, we don’t have anything that low.” “You’re a damn liar! You’re wasting my time with your lies. There was no reason to make up such a stupid lie. You said you’d show me an $18,000 pick-up truck minutes ago, and now you’re saying you don’t have any.” I said words to that effect, nice and loud. Pointing right at his face. To this day, I don’t know why some sales person would make up such a stupid, easy to pin down lie, but that stupid, lying son of a bitch did us a HUGE favor. We went out and bought a Toyota Tacoma. We’ve bought eight more Toyotas since and even my Ex Wife, finding that we have only had to take in our vehicles for regular service and had no mechanical problems, in the many years since the switch has three Toyotas out front of her home. I don’t even know the names of people working in the Toyota dealership’s service department, but with Ford, I not only knew the rep’s name, but some of the mechanics and I could mark their life events, and match them up to problems with Ford pick-up trucks. Oh, and before any Chevy or Dodge folks get chirpy, our commercial vehicles were Chevy and Dodge decades ago, and we went to FORD because Chevy and Dodge sucked, and the Ford trucks had less down time. If we’d only gone to Toyota much sooner, we’d probably have the same vehicles from the 80’s! That salesman, by being a damn liar, and turning us off of Ford, did us a HUGE favor because I can’t imagine how much we haven’t had to pay for mechanical problems we would have had, if we continued buying Fords.
2nd generation (‘65-’69) Chevrolet Corvair, upgraded with current technology, AND continue the station wagon, van and pickups (‘61–’64). At the time, it handled better than any American car, except the Corvette (they had similar fully independent rear suspension), and better acceleration than early pony cars (an air-cooled aluminum engine weighs less than a water-cooled engine with the same displacement — better power-to-weight ratio). Corvair Corsa convertible. Corvair turbocharged engine (the first factory turbo option). Corvair Corsa engine (4 carbs) Corvair Lakewood station wagon. Station wagon AND a trunk (in the front)! Corvair Greenbriar van. Note that all but the rearmost windows roll up and down. Ford and Chrysler vans of the same era’s windows only popped open at the bottom. Most American cars at the time did NOT have air conditioning. Corvair Rampside pickup. The ramp and deep bed make loading easier. Bell Telephone Company used these to easily load telephone cable rolls.
Disclaimer: I have no personal nor commercial connection to any of the entities I reference in this answer, these are just the top results from internet searches and off the top of my head. I do not endorse patronizing any of them. To get the most out of it, I would take it to a car show. There are a number of Ford specific and some are primarily Mustang shows around Florida in the next two months. I would pay the roughly $25-50 entrance fee and put a “For Sale" sign on it. If you do not want to pay, go early and park as close to the entrance as possible. If that is not something you want to do, put it up on an online car sales website. (ie Ebay, Hemmings, Autotrader, etc.) Failing all else, I think CarMax advertisements say that they will buy cars, even if you don't want to buy theirs. You would probably only be offered “trade-in value". October 13, 2018 9th Annual All Ford Powered Car and Truck show Nick Nicholas Ford in Inverness, Florida.
