Ok, but the Project Cars 2 soundtrack is wonderful.
What was your first car?
I owned a MK1 and you could unlock it with a screwdriver. My Dad owned a few Fords in the UK. He was a Del-boy type mechanic/car trader. I remember a Ford Orion he had, where he left his keys in shop by mistake whilst returning to the car for something. Not wanting to return to the shop, he saw a guy getting out of a Fiesta, asked the guy to borrow his key, and unlocked his own Orion with no hassle. Cars are not difficult to break into. Do not leave anything on show that might tempt a thief.
Because the design team got it right
Because throughout the 70s, front wheel drive was becoming fashionable, car manufacturers had realised that it held many advantages for road-going cars including a lighter drive train, less drive train losses and better traction in adverse weather conditions. Escort Mk II: Same colour as mine but minus the searchlight batteries, great fun The lighter drive train was afforded by the absence of the reasonably hefty prop shaft and definitely hefty differential axle; drive train losses, once again, courtesy of the absence of the prop shaft/diff axle arrangement and better traction because the engine was directly over the drive wheels. Escort Mk III: Not the same colour as mine - great fun but not really a great car The UK motor industry was actually late in catching on, with the first UK front-wheel drive car , the Vauxhall Chevette, not launching until 1976 while the German VW Golf Mk I and the French Renault 5 had already been in production for 3 - 4 years. But catch on it did, eventually, and Ford Escort Mk IIIs started shipping out of Köln and Dagenham in late 1980, suggesting a design and incubation period starting somewhere in the late 70s. Like most who’ve owned both, I preferred the Mk II, it was just all-round more fun. The Mk III had pretty sharp handling matched by its appetite for front tyres but the XR3i’s CVH engine was coarse, didn’t like being revved and was a bit gutless in mid-range.
