Clearly and Obviously The peak steroid seasons in the 90s and early 2000s right before they cracked down on PEDs in the MLB saw this: 73 Barry Bonds, San Francisco (N.L.) 2001 70 Mark McGwire, St. Louis (N.L.) 1998 66 Sammy Sosa, Chicago (N.L.) 1998 65 Mark McGwire, St. Louis (N.L.) 1999 64 Sammy Sosa, Chicago (N.L.) 2001 63 Sammy Sosa, Chicago (N.L.) 1999 With no one cracking 61 since Roger Maris back in the 1961. These were good players, sure. Mark McGwire lead the league in HR a few times before his 70 HR outburst in 1998 and his 65 HR follow up season. But in the two prior seasons his combined total was less that 60. Sammy was a power hitter too, never getting over 40 until he got 66 in 1998. Same deal with Bonds who never got 50 except for the year he got 73. Sudden bursts of power all coinciding with the end of the steroid era. Other PEDs help players recover from injuries faster. Pitchers get injured quite a bit, it’s a dangerous motion to throw a ball 100+ times twice a week at 90+ miles an hour with motion. HGH and other steroids can help them recover quicker and get back in the game without missing time and getting a reputation for being fragile. Is this unfair? That’s an ethical matter up to the reader. Congress and baseball says: “yes” as do sportswriters since they’re refusing to let these players into the HOF (despite meth being rampant in the earlier baseball eras). But does it really?
There are no uniform, agreed upon criteria for Hall of Fame election. Some voters like to flex their muscle and just vote whom they feel like. Some voters felt that Ford was not qualified for first ballot election and thus had to pay his dues for election. Some voters may not have liked Ford. Some may have felt his achievements were mainly due to his playing for the Yankees.
Last year, the white Sox played consistently below career norms for a good portion of the players. With the addition of Jackson, Lawrie, and Frazier along with the departure of LaRoche, Melky should be in a good position to have more protection around the batting order. Melky will be rotating the DH role with Abreu, Eaton, and Garcia being in that mix, the Sox have primed themselves for flexibility. If the pitching can be more consistent and the players play at or slightly above career norms, the Sox can make a good run this year. Remember, the White Sox team didn't have a single hitter batting above 300 when they made their 2005 run, but had a team batting average of .262 which is crazy good. They had 4 of their starters have an Era less than 4 and all four of those starters had at least 14 wins and the 5th starter, Orlando Hernandez had a career year as well with a 9-9 record. Go White Sox! Source: http://m.bbref.com/m?p=XXteamsXXCHWXX2005-pitching.shtml&t=player_standard_pitching
Mom always told me don't say anything if you don't have anything nice to say. But sorry, Mom, it needs to be said: John Sterling of the Yankees. He is absolutely terrible, and it is a shame that Yankees fans have to suffer the pomposity and banality of his idiotic, self-promotional schtick during games. About once a week, Sterling launches into his, "It is high, it is far," home run signature call, only to have balls land on the grass before the warning track in the outfield, or hit the wall, or be caught by outfielders. Look, Phil Rizzuto was an American original - he would go on tangents, lose track of the game, whatever -- but you never thought that HE thought he was bigger than the actual game. That's not true of many modern announcers, sadly -- and Sterling is one of the biggest culprits. Other pet peeves: + Announcers who constantly get into "I, me, my" madness... I think here, in my opinion, etc. Hey dunbas: we know it's your opinion and what you think, because YOU are the one speaking. + Announcers who have to call players by first names or nicknames. Sterling does this constantly. "Gardy" for Gardner, "Jeet" for Jeter, "Grandy" for Granderson. He thinks it impresses listeners because it makes listeners know he is an insider; in fact, it just shows listeners he is an insufferable ass. + Stupid calls that become signature calls. Sterling's "A-Bomb from A-Rod," is neither funny nor witty; hopefully, A-Rod is done and we will not have to hear it again. + Announcers who do not do their job: Specifically, forgetting to tell us score, inning, outs, on base situations and counts. Folks, it is radio. At least once a batter, tell us "3-2 Yankees, bottom of the seventh, runners at first and second, 2-2 to Jeter coming up..." so we know what the hell is going on in the game. The job of an anouncer is not to be witty, or cool, or cute - it is to provide information to an audience he or she is serving, to be their "eyes" at the game. Just saying.
Yes,but it did not happen for him.He was past his prime and he did not make the Minnesota Twins roster during spring training.
No. Baseball was always a nerd-fest for stat freaks and the steroid era ruined that. Analytics has brought it back.
Who was the greatest MLB pitcher of the 1960s: Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, Mickey Lolich, Sandy Koufax, Juan Marichal, or Whitey Ford? These six are all excellent pitchers. Here is their career WAR.
