What ignorant thing did a retail employee say that made you walk out of the store without buying a single item? Have you been to Florida lately, because insulting and driving customers aware seems to be a common business training tool at many businesses down here. It’s really not fair to lump things that way because there’s a lot of great folks down here who really do their best to make everyone happy and often without just rewards. It’s just that there are many who do all they can to rip customers off and drive them away. It’s the bad ones who ruin things for all the good people because with so many negative experiences, one becomes automatically suspect when interacting with any business for the first time. MarkKw Oh boy, where to start … how about with Sears? This took place in 2005 when I was looking to purchase a new kitchen range and before the refrigerator that Sears knew was defective but kept selling anyway nearly burned my house down (yes, Sears was well aware of the defective components used in the refrigerators and freezers which caused thousands of fires, but they kept right on selling those fire hazards to their unsuspecting customers and then denying all warranty claims). Anyway, I go into a Sears retail store where the sales employee boldly and loudly rips me a new one for touching the “DISPLAY MODEL” range. Well, I told her where she could shove the range and the sale as walked out. Filed a complaint with Sears who didn’t even bother to respond. For the manner in which I and my friends have been treated by employees at Ford dealerships (numerous ones) I will never again ever consider buying any Ford product. Of course Ford could ,not ,care less because they don’t bother to respond to customer complaints either since they make it corporate policy to blame the customer for their substandard products. The final straw was a Ford factory representative accusing my 79 year old female friend of “street racing” as the reason her Ecoboost engine was burning more oil than gasoline with only 9000 miles on it … yup, despite the thousands of other Ecoboost engines that were suffering the same failures, Ford categorically denied responsibility for the defective engine and insisted on blaming the customers. Well, take your Ford and shove it! Wholesale but still fits the question - after having done business with Johnstone Supply for more than twelve years in Pennsylvania, I go into their store in Ocala, Florida wearing my clearly marked company uniform. I inquire about some parts and the idiot behind the counter goes into a tirade (literally screaming at me) about how it’s “illegal” for me to even be in that store without a Florida HVAC contractor’s license and all sorts of other nonsense and lies. When he paused his tirade of insults and lies just long enough to catch his breath, I informed him that I “had” been a Johnstone customer for more than twelve years with millions of dollars in sales but no longer would be because of him. I went back to my office and sent three emails to corporate about the incident and was completely ignored. Well, I ordered the few items I needed online from a mom & pop HVAC supply in Tennessee who were more than happy to have my business, so they’re the ones who have gotten the subsequent millions of dollars in consulting and referrals since Johnstone Supply was no longer interested in getting my business. Nothing quite like the “factory authorized Cummins engines dealer” insisting that the 555 Cummins engine is not a Cummins product. Yup, once again it was an Ocala, Florida location where the “factory authorized Cummins engines dealer” employee said to me, “How many times do I have to tell you that that isn’t a Cummins engine? Are you some kind of idiot or don’t you understand English?” … yeah, he said that as I read off the Model and Serial number from the “Cummins” tag on the side of the “Cummins” engine. I called the aftermarket parts dealer and they were thrilled to deliver $1800 in parts for the Cummins engine to me faster than a pizza would have gotten there. Marathon gas station and convenience stores. I walked out of one a few months back in Plant City, Florida because the card reader on the pump wasn’t working and when I went into the store to pay cash, the clerk was talking on the phone and flippantly waved me off when I tried to hand him $50 for gasoline. Just yesterday I stopped at another one in Bushnell, Florida where the coffee was ice cold and when I asked about it, the clerk said, “Use the microwave.” Uh, nope! I’m not paying $2 for microwaved coffee. Last time I’ll ever set foot in a Marathon. Target store Clermont, Florida. I wait in a long line and after more than 20 minutes I finally get to the register with probably $250 worth of items I’d just moved from the buggy onto the belt line and the middle-aged black female employee at the register blasts out, “I’m closed!”. I look completely astonished not only at her nasty attitude, but when I look at the supervisor standing a few feet away and ask if someone else id coming, with just as much nasty attitude as the cashier has she says, “No! Y’all needs to go to another register!” Meanwhile the light is still on at this register and at least eight people with buggies in line behind me. So I replied to the supervisor, “How about I just go to a different store like Walmart!” and I walked out as did most of the people in line behind me. Yeah, Target Corporate was as disinterested in losing business as their store employees. That was 2006’ish and I haven’t been in a Target since and never will either. Steak-n-Shake Tampa, Florida, this was before me and several friends got serious food poisoning from another Steak-n-Shake and were blown off by both the local store where it happened and Corporate. Anyway, I place my order, paid and then waited in line for the take out. When I check my sack to make sure they put everything in, one item was missing and the others were literally just thrown into the sack with the fries spilled and the burger out of the wrapper. I handed the sack back to the clerk and asked, “Does that look acceptable to you?” She flippantly replied, “Take it or leave it. I don’t care.” To which I said, “Fine, give me my money back.” and she said I would have to talk to the manager. Waited over ten minutes for the manager to finally waddle from the office to the counter where she was completely disinterested and argued with me for at least five more minuted before returning only part of my money claiming she could not refund the State Sales tax because the order was completed. Yes, I tried contacting Steak-n-Shake corporate several times about this and the food poisoning incident was completely ignored so I ignore them too. Napa Auto Parts … yeah, pick a Florida store any Florida store as they all seem to have the same attitude of “screw the customer while insulting them”. Up until incident that broke this camel’s back in 2015 I had been a Napa commercial customer for 30-some years. I call the store to verify inventory and pricing before driving 20 miles to pick up four sets of trailer bearings. I get there to find out that the price was $80 higher than the price he quoted on the phone. I need them nonetheless and after driving 20 miles back to the job I find that six of the eight SKF bearing are defective. Another 20 mile drive back to the store to find out they don’t have any other bearings and they can’t take these back because now they’re “used” because I removed them from the opaque plastic sack they come in because otherwise you can’t see the bearing. Argument ensues over getting my money back and end up having to call AmEx to do a charge-back because the store refused to give me a refund. Numerous calls and emails to Napa corporate were never returned after I was assured that someone would “get in touch with me within 48 hours” … it’s over four years, still no return call or email from Napa so I haven’t been back there either. Bed Bath & Beyond Orlando, Florida - trying to find a particular product a friend saw in one of their ads and when I tried to describe it to the sales clerk, she looked at me and said, “Well, if you don’t know what it’s called, how am I supposed to know what you want?” With that, I didn’t even reply. I just walked out the door. Home Depot Lady Lake, Florida line of people trying to check out backed up well into the merchandise isles. One register open and count them, four HD employees standing around talking to each other behind the one checker who was working her butt off. One customer yelled to them, “Hey, do you think you can give this lady some help or open another register?” to which one of the employees replied, “We don’t work the front. If you can’t wait, go somewhere else.” That’s when most of us waiting in line dropped our stuff on the floor or left the buggies sitting and walked out. That was a good move too because not only did I save about $15 buying the stuff at Lowe’s down the street, but they gave my service dog a bottle of water too. Bonefish Grill Gainesville, Florida - the experience started when I got a very snarky look for walking in with my service dog, nonetheless I said to the lady, “I don’t mean for this to sound rude or pushy, I’m just on a tight schedule between doctor appointments and was wondering about how long it takes to get an order since I’ve never been here before?” Half turning away from me she replied, “If you’re in that much of a rush, why didn’t you go to McDonald's?” Yup, walked right back out the door and haven’t gone back and never will. RoMac Supply Leesburg, Florida - Walk in, wait in line while the employee yaps with someone on the phone for quite some time about nothing related to business. Finally I get to say, “I need pricing on steel roof panels and trim.” to which the counter clown replies, “If you have to ask for pricing, you can’t afford it.” Nope, didn’t waste any more of my time, walked right back out the door.

Would you let your 19-year-old daughter travel with her boyfriend?

My Gulf Oil supervisor Dad and my Texas first grade elementary teacher mom (both very devout Methodists and church finance team members/occasional Sunday School teachers) let me go in college with my steady boyfriend I met between my Sophomore year and Junior year go to Florida on a similar trip. We didn't do the Disney thing there but on a trip a year later, we did the opposite trip and went to Disney Land in Anaheim and to travel up & down Pacific Coast Highway in a very planned and financially responsible trip we both saved for (even deciding to rent a Chrysler LeBaron white convertible in Albuquerque Airport) just for the thrill of driving a convertible car for two weeks on this long summer road trip from there through the desert (with the top down) and deciding at the split to go to Palm Springs rather than Vegas (best decision ever cause California kids go on Spring Break there and we saw two weather systems in the same day—mid 80’s sunny weather laying out by the pool of the cheapest motel we could find on our college-age budget that was clean inside but had a cool, very crowded pool area of college kids—Westward Ho motel-a very Retro 50’s-60’s motorcourt all one level hotel). But back to Florida trip first. We were going to visit Daytona Beach, Florida for my first Spring Break trip ever. Luckily, his oldest sister of this mostly famous Camp Pendleton CA Marine Drill Instructor/Gunnery Sergeant/Exec VP-Houston ExLog Geologist dad, let us stay at her home in Ocala, Fl. She was a news reporter with a hubby who worked for the National Forest Service. My Mom was more worried than my dad about her unmarried college-age daughter going on an over 1,000 mile road trip but after much pleading on my part, they finally consented. First if was heck no, then maybe, then well ok. Then ok but take your Dad’s Gulf gas card for purchases on the road so you won't run out (they could secretly track our progress by the gas fill ups on the way & back which you could probably track online or just calling the gas credit card company these days). I was told to check in every night to advise our planned trip which we laid out beforehand with a paper map (my Dad was an engineer, planner of everything and a details guy though not a hovering person). We decided where we might initially stop at which planned cities based on how far we thought we could drive daily without pooping out first. Turns out that from his Mom’s Spring, TX home to Ocala, Florida (not far from Daytona Beach) was 13 hours, 4 min. (Longer if you count a few gas station breaks, snack and potty breaks). So we headed out early AM (so we’d only be driving a few hours in the dark when the sun came up) but at least we’d be on IH-10 East mostly the whole way so a big, giant safer interstate freeway (not smaller, rural roads that might flood in rain or any bad weather on the way). But we did check the 10 day weather forecast and Spring Break in March looked perfect—80’s and warm sunny weather—perfect Spring Break weather for college kids to hang out and listen to famous bands that beer and other local Florida radio station and city events planners had cultivated for playing daily outdoor concerts (I think Marshall Tucker Band, possibly ZZ Top and maybe other famous 80’s bands like Flock of Seagulls were playing). It was the 80’s so lots of popular music —this is a more middle of the road, southern college age Spring Break version of Coachella concerts these days. My parents were smart. My dad didn't want me to starve either so he gave me his gas card so we wouldn't break down in a nice new Toyota celica (a sophomore year Dec birthday gift—my first car which was a surprise from my Ford/Mercury loving, all-American typical car buyer to buy me a foreign car but I loved it—-white but hated the light blue interior—whose Toyota design idea was that—-obviously someone who loved the 50’s/60’s powder blue interior colors). We were also given a surprise envelope of $1,000 cash from Dad for a weeklong trip after deciding we would try to stay in New Orleans around the French Quarter (first night) and then second night in Alabama since the state of Florida is very wide and long and like Texas, it can take awhile to go from West to East or even North to South cause it's a giant boot like Italy). We phoned at night every day until we arrived at his older married sister’s home. We promised not to spend all of it but with a gas card and money (and actually only one night in hotel in Alabama cause we breezed through New Orleans, Mississippi and got to Mobile,Alabama in record time of only 7 hours (1/2 way) and spent the night at a clean 3 star motel (my Dad insisted on at least 3 stars and larger chain motels only in decent towns—his pref: Holiday Inns which Gulf did promotional Disney tie-in travel magazines back then for family road trips). Next day, we phoned our parents and drove another 7 hours to Ocala, FL and spent the night with his sister. Next day, we departed for Daytona Speedway to see that. Then we went on to Daytona Beach and stayed there with his sister all week commuting back and forth the rest of the week. We departed on Fri, spent Sat night back in Alabama and then were home on Sun in Spring. We were tanned, had tons of pictures to show everyone of our amazing road trip and had spent every last penny of that $1000. We budgeted for a hotel room in Alabama, set up an advance reservation, and planned for meals, snacks though we got free lodging all week from his sister. Sometimes it helps to have a friend or family and stay with them but blocking a hotel a few days is great too. If road travel has slight delays, we cancelled reservations and rebooked if needed (like canceling New Orleans and taking turns driving 3.5 hour driving shifts so we both could take rests on a 7 hour drive to Alabama). The money was spent on fun which my Dad anticipated college students might want. They had nightly bar drink specials but every place required a Cover charge to walk in the door so it wasn't the nonstop boozy drinkfest you might think. We might spend $10-$20 for a cover charge to buy a few beers and listen to live music. Over a week, that money was blown fast but we did enjoy the music concerts and night club 80’s dress up and dance scene. It was fun and memorable. We got back safe and sound. Check the weather, give them a gas card for gas buys only and a reliable safe car with no history of breakdowns. Give them enough cash in today’s 2017 world to allocate for fun and food but my Dad gave me a credit card for hotel rooms and ER uses only as a backup to the cash. Sounds generous? No. Realistic. Travel even by car cross-country is pricey. That's why some kids still fly. I used to fly everywhere on Braniff Air, Texas International?, Southwest, and Continental. Remember those airlines? I racked up lots of frequent flier miles flying to Oklahoma to see my parents through Tulsa airport after they left Texas upon my 1980 high school graduation and retired up to Grand Lake (once touted by oil companies as 4th largest US retirement place). These days Southwest still flies pretty cheap to Florida and I’be done blended flights on Southwest up there and Spirit Air to get back when return flights have been too pricey or sold out. They could fly if old enough to get a rental car these days—-can they? They would need a driver’s license, probably age 21 and proof of insurance. Not sure car rental companies rent to 18–20 year olds these days because kids used to steal these rentals and wreck them so they ruined it for the rest of good college kids. But Uber is awesome in Florida —we used it this past year in Summer 2016 for first time as a divorced mom with two teen sons and a pickup from Orlando MCO and it was pricey from Airport only $65 or so (no tips allowed) and paid with my iPhone app and a credit card you store on the app so no cash transferred. Best of all, they are fast. Don't call unless you expect them to be there within 3 min of your call—faster and cheaper than taxis or pricey car rentals where Universal hotels make you pay $20 day to valet and don't allow self-parking. Free shuttles from all Universal hotels to most Major theme parks (or boat rides on the water if you stay at their waterfront hotels). The airport ride is pricey cause Uber's there have to register like taxis and pay airport cab type fees to City. Once you get to your hotel, we took daily Uber's to the Universal front doors for $5 to $8 avg fee from Cabana Bay Hotel. Have fun. Let them go.
