ford fiesta mk3 Q&A Review

What engine other than Chrysler was a hemi?

Think the '80s & '90s 1.6L European ford 4 cylinder CVH engine was a hemi (H of the name being for Hemispherical head design). Quite a decent engine -especially in its mk3 rs turbo Fiesta and mk 3&4 Escorts. (torque steering idiot cars but very entertaining - especially chipped- weighed less than a ton and very lively)

What 10 cars defined the 1990s?

For the UK certainly hatchbacks and probably when “premium” German cars started to become more of a common site on UK roads. What Defined The 1990's? : Lookers Ford Fiesta Originally launched in 1976, the Fiesta celebrates the big 4-0 this year. Considered a stalwart of the Ford brand, the Fiesta was credited with being one of the most popular cars of the 1990’s. Today its popularity is as enduring as ever and while hurtling toward middle-age, this compact hatchback is now celebrated as being the UK’s best-selling car of all time. It was during the 90’s that the Fiesta underwent its biggest post-launch transformation. From boxy and angular, a new engineering platform and shape ensured it emerged complete with smooth lines making it popular with young drivers. Was the ,Fiesta, your first car? Volkswagen Golf Providing as much enjoyment on screen and they did on road, Volkswagen were as well known for their TV commercials in the 1990’s as they were for their cars. From squeaky earrings to business men and even the Bluebells singing ‘Young at Heart’, the award winning ads drew on influences from pop culture through to timely societal trends. For many the Golf – especially the GTI version - was the epitome of cool. Its versatility meant that it was equally at home functioning as a small family car as it was as a car for young professionals. With reportedly nearly 140,000 still on the roads today, its mantra ‘If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen’ proves itself to be true. Renault Clio Hearing the words ‘Nicole’ and ‘Papa’ in the 90’s could only invoke the image of one thing – a Clio, mais oui. The ads were so popular that in 1996, one survey found the word ‘Nicole’ was recognised by more Britons than the Prime Minister at the time (John Major in case you'd forgotten), actor Bob Hoskins and presenter Chris Evans. Originally introduced in 1990, the ,Clio, has gone onto become one of the consistently best-selling cars of its generation. Voted European Car of the Year twice, in 1991 and then again in 2006, it is credited with restoring Renaults presence and stature after a difficult period of trading in the 1980’s. Its on-screen popularity helped propel it to the overall best-seller list for the 1990’s with demand fuelled in particular by the Williams hot hatch – a favourite with drivers due to its agility and out-right fun factor. BMW 3 Series (E36) With a lifespan of 7 years (1991 – 1998) the 3 Series went on to find itself named annually in Car and Driver Magazine’s ’10 Best Cars List’. Driven by Pierce Brosnan in ‘Goldeneye’ in 1995, the 3 Series has enjoyed its time in the spotlight with appearances in movies such as The Chase, Hangover 2 and Beverley Hills Cop. Last year a 1996 3 Series which had featured in one of the madcap Top Gear challenges (driven by Richard Hammond in Germany) was auctioned off. Probably best to check the suspension with that one….and the steering column…..and the engine…and…well, pretty much everything. Originally available with four and six cylinder engines, rear suspension was the ‘Z-axle’ Multilink suspension, as used in the Z1. With approximately 88,000 on the road today, there is still plenty of scope for more celebrity moments. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 190 range, the C-Class was the smallest model in the marque's line-up until its sibling, the A-Class, came along in 1997. The first C-Class (W202) sedan was first produced on 1 June 1993 and ceased manufacture in 2000. Almost unrecognisable from today’s sophisticated and sleek C3, nonetheless this German-built classic marked a shift toward greater interior comfort and the inclusion of more standard equipment such as power-steering, a 5 speed-gearbox, and central locking. Indeed, many of the things we take for granted in 2016. Back in the day a brand new 1995 C-Class would have cost just shy of £30,000 – today on the second hand market this could be picked up for a few thousand, with owners describing them as ‘the best of the marque’ and ,‘the best car so far in my life’,. Makes the C-Class sound awfully tempting doesn’t it? And a few more from ,The greatest and most definitive cars of 1990s Britain - Car Keys You couldn’t have this list without mentioning the Mondeo! Ford Mondeo The first Ford Mondeo was introduced in 1992 to replace the ageing Sierra. Originally dubbed the ‘Mundano’ by the press, the Mondeo went on to become a huge success with hundreds of thousands of Mk1 Mondeos sold in the UK. The popularity of the car led to the term ‘Mondeo man’ being coined by Tony Blair in 1996, a label used to encapsulate the sort of everyman voter Blair’s concept of New Labour wanted to target. Blair’s victory in 1997 is cited by many as the moment which kicked off the ‘Cool Britannia’ movement good and proper, securing the original Mondeo’s status as arguably the most 90s car of all. Subaru Impreza Turbo Prior to the release of the Impreza Turbo, for many all you needed to know about Subaru was that the badge read “U R A BUS” in your rear view mirror. But the Japanese brand’s dowdy image was instantly shattered the moment a certain Mr McRae won the 1995 World Rally Championship in ,his Impreza,. Britain went rally mad, to the point that waiting lists for special-edition Imprezas like the P1 stretched back 18 months or more, and the country was flooded with an influx of blue-and-gold turbocharged road weapons. The Impreza Turbo offered limitless grip and sports car-beating performance for a tiny fraction of the cost and has given birth to a whole range of cars that have thrilled enthusiasts and scared pensioners for nearly 30 years. And a final 3 from ,The best cars from the 1990s Porsche 996 - 1997-2004 – from £15,000 A reputation for troublesome engines has driven 996 values down, but there are fixes available; buy smart, and you get a pukka 911 that’s terrific to drive without having to pay the usual premium. And try to remember the last time you saw one of these on the road. See? They’re getting rare now. Toyota Celica Mk7 - 1999-2006 – from £1500 The last of the Celicas still languishes close to banger territory, yet its sharp styling still looks fresh today. Bear in mind, too, that beneath the skin sits the same rev-happy 1.8-litre engine as is fitted to the Mk3 MR2 – not to mention a chassis that’s similarly fleet of foot. Won’t hang around at these prices forever Jaguar XJR - 1994-1997 – from £3800 This was the last manual XJR (codename ‘X306’), and it proved a worthy, supercharged challenger to the BMW M5 and Mercedes E500 super-saloons of the day. The 4.0-litre straight-six was good for 326bhp and the rare five-speed Getrag manual gearboxes have a reputation for reliability. Modern Jaguar owes a lot to this svelte contender.

Would you buy a car made by Ford?

The quick answer would be “Yes” I have owned several over the years as well as many other makes. The most memorable and the best in terms of “ enjoyment per £” , was my first car . A 1937 Ford model 7W Ford 10 (1172 cc side-valve) .I was thirteen. It cost me a good few weeks to save up my pocket money to pay the £5 to get it.It spent the rest if its life careering around a field as my friends and I learnt to drive, to control skids in mud and dig it out ocassionally and I learnt the basics of car repairing. After getting a driving licence , I had a 1958 Ford 100e Prefect which my older brother gave me. A rather slow 1172 side-valve again but after a few “alterations” (a Cortina engine and gear box )it quite became quite nippy. I had a 105e Anglia, a Fiesta MkI, a Mk3 Escort 1600 at various times. The quality took a steady dive in the seventies in terms of a depressing abilty to rust and I steered away from Fords for years and instead had Opel, Citroen, Peugeot, Volkswagen ,several different varieties of Land-rovers and no particular issues with any of them. My mother had two Mk 2 Fiestas which were dreary, awful rot boxes but then in her mid eighties she decided to buy a Ford Ka which she loved - I was surprised how well it handled - better than many so called sport cars I had driven. My wife bought a Ford C Max 2 litre tdci in 2011 -Superbly put together , comfortable, torquey performer and has proved to be utterly reliable. We have kept it a long time- it just keeps going. I have driven new Fiestas and Focuses (as hire cars) and I would say they handled better and seemed as well ,if not better ,put together than a brand new BMW 1 series that I hired for a week recently. What the the blue oval badge lacks in snob appeal it more than compensates in other areas.

Can we use front wheel drive engine such as Honda B16 series to run a rear wheel drive car?

yes. quite easily. here in the UK we have the Aerial Atom, a little lightweight 2 seater powered by the engine from a Honda (civic type R from memory) which has the engine/gearbox mounted behind the deats, rear wheel drive, with a specialist gear linkage to get it all to work. if you are considering mating it to a conventional rear drive layout, then as long as the transmission physically fits to the engine, either directly or via an adaptor plate, then the engine wont know the difference. fabricating engine mounts and bell housing adaptors OR fabricating a gear linkage are the only real (potentially) difficult parts of such a conversion. again in the UK in our motoring history we had cars like the mk2 Ford Cortina and the mk1/2 Escort, which were rear wheel drive and powered by the 1.1/1.3 ohv ‘kent’ engine. this engine later found its way into mk3/4/5/6 Escorts (front wheel drive) pretty much ALL small engined Fiestas until the mid 2000s, the ford Ka (all of which are front wheel drive)

Video game Music, which theme/song would you rate the highest?

Very good question, I am not musical expert so I can’t judge a composition on its technical merit. I can only share my subjective opinion. Analysis of Spotify data suggests what we like in our teens sets out musical taste as adults, but I’ll come to that later. Our musical tastes peak as teens, says study My own personal favourites 2011 Far Horizons: The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Just hearing this wants me to fire up a new game and go adventuring. An absolutely stunning piece that captures the natural beauty of the world. 1993 ,I,ntro Music: Jungle Strike Shamelessly ripping off Top Gun this little piece of Midi magic was all that was needed to get any 12 year old completely overexcited. 1991 Ken’s Theme Street Fighter 2 A lot of fuss is made of the Guile Theme but I’ve always preferred this. 2001 Just a Day: Feeder Gran Turismo 3 Like like practically every British 18 year old in 2001 I listened to Feeder and wanted a PS2. To this day Feeder songs remind me of 3 things. Finishing my A Levels, buying my first car (a lovely K reg 1.1 Mk3 Ford Fiesta called Tallulah) and being blown away by the amazing graphics the first time I played my PS2. 1996 Hell March: Command and Conquer Red Alert In 1996 this was about as cool as it was possible to get. However 4 years later… 2000 Hell March 2: Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 Westwood Studios setting the standard for video game intros. However as far as I am concerned there is one video game theme that surpasses all others, The orchestral version is one of my all time favourite pieces of music. 1997 Main Theme: Final Fantasy VII If I get my way that will be the music at the start of my funeral. At the end I’m having this.. I first heard 6 of these 7 themes by the time I was 18. Either game music is getting worse (which I don’t think is the case) or you really are hardwired to have a long lasting love for the music of your youth.

Have you ever bought a vehicle at a car auction, where no one seemed to be interested in the vehicle, so you ended up getting it for an incredibly low price?

About 15 years ago, or thereabouts, I bought a mk3 Ford Fiesta for the grand sum of £12.50 from ebay. No, the price isn't a typo. The reason it was so cheap, was that it was a Category B write off with rear end damage. Cat B - Body shell should be crushed. Signifies extensive damage, although some parts are salvageable. Should never re-appear on road, although reclaimed parts can be used in other road-going vehicles. It made me roughly a couple hundred pounds in profit selling off working parts and then the shell to a local scrappy.

Why were so few cars front-wheel drive 40 years ago? Was the technology that difficult?

40 years ago was 1980. in 1980, here in the UK/Europe, front wheel drive was increasingly normal. 1980 saw the launch of the front wheel drive Ford Escort mk3, the Ford Fiesta was already around and had been for a few years, the Vauxhall Astra/Opel Kadett was also going FWD in 1980 and the Cavalier/Vectra following suit within a year. we had also had the Austin Mini (the REAL mini, not the BMW abomination, and NOT a Cooper as they dropped the Cooper at the factory for a number of years) since the late 50s/early 60s, the Austin Metro (used Mini engines and transmissions) and other cars from British Leyland (Austin, Morris, Rover and Triumph) were front wheel drive, like the Triumph Acclaim. in the models i have named we have probably covered 5 or 6 of the top 10 selling cars in the UK at the time, so outside of America, FWD wasnt uncommon at ALL.

Why did Renault have greater success with Le Car?

Greater success in what respect? Where? Le Car, or the Renault 5 as it was more commonly known, was one of the best selling Renault models of all time in the market sector and demographic it was aimed at. I owned and drove a Renault 5 TL 3 door as my first car for several years. With a 957cc engine and a whole 47bhp, it was certainly no speed demon, and it certainly had it’s idiosyncracies but as a ‘first car’ for a new driver, it was certainly hard to beat for running costs, economy, insurance and keeping on the road very cheaply. The Mk1 was very similar to the old Citroen 2CV in that it had the umbrella handle gearstick on the dashboard. The Mk2 facelift models had a proper floor-change gearstick which made it much more conventional and placed it firmly in the ‘first car’ options along with the original Austin Mini, Ford Fiesta Mk1 and other similar sub-1 litre budget cars. The later Mk3 (Graduate and Campus) models had better specifications and more performance but lost a lot of their character. My ideal classic car? A mid-engined Mk2 Renault 5 Turbo. Now that really is a French pocket-rocket!

What cars do non-wealthy car enthusiasts usually drive in your country?

In the UK, (England at least) : Ford focus ST (mkII is common) Ford fiesta (Normally 2000’s models ) Vauxhall Corsa VW Golf (older versions) VW POLO 9N (modified) VW POLO MK 2, 3 and 5 (4 mentioned obove aka 9n ^) VW Lupo Seat Arosa (rebadged Lupo) Vauxhall Astra pre 2009 (hatchback, saloon, coupe and van) Vauxhall Astra VXR (old and maybe new model) Vauxhall Vectra SRI Vauxhall Zafira mk 1 (GSI) and 2 (VXR) BMW E46: 320d and other non M models (sedan, estate, coupe and convertible) Mazda mx5 (early 2000’s and prior) Seat Ibiza FR mk3 and 4 Skoda Fabia VRS diesel or petrol Ford mondeo ST mk 3 Honda civic EP3 Type R (older, non-modified versions of the civic in general are harder to find and old Type R’s are rare and costly) Seat Leon ( I've heard people call it “the poor man's Golf”. Its still a nice car imo) Skoda Ocatvia VRS older shape Audi A3 (older models) And I'm sure there's plenty more. Notes: Vauxhall is a UK car brand. Yet vauxhall is essentially a rebaged opel, with roots from Germany.
