jaguar zoo attack Q&A Review

Why did a jaguar attack a woman taking a selfie at the Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park in Arizona?

Because she was stupid. Jaguars are apex predators, wild animals, and can't be trusted. Even in a zoo, even if you know them. The woman broke the rules by climbing over the barrier to the jaguar's enclosure, and got too close. Because she was stupid, and in our Insta-world, of ,course, she had to try to get a selfie with a 250 pound cat that can bite through a caiman's skull. If she had died she'd be a prime candidate for a Darwin Award.

Can a Jaguar handle an attack from a tiger?

And can Bruce Lee "handle" a boxing match with Mohamed Ali !? Jaguar and tiger are completely different categories. The tiger is twice as big and five or six times as strong. Paw strike. Demolition of the ground. Clamping. Head bite. Breaking the skull with one squeeze. This happens when a tiger catches a leopard, which on average is slightly smaller than a jaguar, but in almost the same category. The same awaits every jaguar failed to escape a tiger. A quarter of a century ago, in the Sofia Zoo, where the cages of predators are next door, the adult male Siberian tiger had been dropped to move to the neighboring cages. In less than half an hour, he killed a younger Bengal tiger and two of the three jaguars living together. The third jaguar was badly injured. They managed to drug him before he entered the lion and the lionesses cage, and continue to kill.

Why was the Brazilian jaguar shot?

First, it was not in Rio, it was in Manaus (the capital of the state of Amazonas). The simplified explanation,: it became stressed on its way back to the Zoo, attacked one of the military officers, and had to be shot. The real explanation,: because we, humans, are fucking morons. We still believe wild animals are there for our entertainement. We believe that showing an endangered animal at an event such as the Olympic Torch Run is “cool” and shows the world the richness of our fauna. Yeah, we’re stupid like that. Who’s to blame for such a beautiful animal’s death? There is no question here: we are. The jaguar behave as expected, being WILD and all! It belonged in the jungle, not in a fucking show.

Which is cooler, a jaguar or a tiger?

Indisputably, and with scientific evidence… I can assure you that it is the jaguar, which is cooler than the tiger. Although both of these “Big Cats” are awesome beyond words; both fill a very important niche in their respective biomes; both are apex predators; both love swimming, and use it in their hunting… the fact remains that the body temperature of a tiger is a toasty 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and the temperature of a jaguar is a considerably cooler 94.8 degrees. These are the established healthy norms for these two beasts, determined by the insertion of a rectal thermometer, in the hands of a skilled veterinary professional. I would suggest that anyone unskilled in taking rectal temperature readings of tigers and jaguars, not try this at home. But if you must, you may want to confine your efforts to that of a domestic cat, whose temperature is between 101 and 102 degrees. Domestic cats aren’t nearly as cool. And if that’s not enough to convince you… perhaps this beautifully aquatic, underwater fishing jaguar will help you make up your mind: Just ,try, to tell me that that is not the coolest thing you’ve seen today. Granted, I may be biased. I have worked with several jaguars, but never a tiger. In any case… jaguars ARE the coolest! In full disclosure, there is one single source that cites a jaguar’s body temperature as being 98.6. I’d need a Big Cat zoo vet to settle that. But it is still a cooler temp than a tiger’s, so my answer remains the same. Not only is the jaguar the coolest Big Cat… but it's also the most honorable. The data doesn't lie: ,Stefan Pociask's answer to Are there any examples of jaguars attacking people?

What would happen if a sub-adult jaguar escaped from a zoo to the Sundarban Delta? Will it be able to survive or not? Why?

The Sundarbans delta, located in the Bay of Bengal between India and Bangladesh, is a region covered in thick, dense jungle overflown by rivers, making it the largest mangrove forest in the world (around 6,000 to 10,000 square kilometers) – sure enough, the Sundarbans is a network of marine streams, mud shores and mangrove forests that contain a wide variety of wildlife. Thus, it is an ideal habitat for a fugitive jaguar, whether the cat is a fully-grown adult or a sub-adult. Also, keep in mind that the jaguar is among the few big cats to be adept swimmers. Not only that, it’s also one of the few terrestrial predators to actively kill its prey while in the water! Not to mention its incredibly powerful bite-force – one that can easily break a crocodile’s skull or even a turtle’s shell! – and its yellow coat filled with black rosettes, which allows it to blend seamlessly in the dense foliage and undergrowth, do come in handy. As I said before, the Sundarbans contain a wide variety of fauna, including monkeys, deer, wild boars, turtles, snakes and crocodiles – an all-you-can-eat buffet for the jaguar, whose diet is known to regularly include reptiles. So, a jaguar that has escaped from a zoo to venture into the Sundarbans delta would be perfectly at home in this ecoregion, since it’s covered in overflowing jungle – an ideal place for camouflage and swimming –, and offers lots of quarry to hunt and feed on. However, there’s a downside: within the depths of the Sundarbans, lies danger even for the jaguar, even worse than snakes and crocodiles – I’m talking about, of course, the region’s tigers. Sure enough, the Sundarbans is home to over 100 Bengal tigers, one of the largest tiger populations in one area; and the striped cats are the biggest of all felines, and thus stronger, far more powerful and far better built than jaguars, not to mention they’re also avid swimmers, crossing up to 29 km (18 miles) per day – so, water offers little to no protection. Sometimes, the jaguar might fight back and fend off a large tiger, but only if the attacker was unsure of itself or was itself a sub-adult. Also, despite its stronger bite-force, the relatively small spotted cat cannot land a fatal blow on the much bigger tiger, and hence cannot kill it, unless Stripes was a small cub. And in the case of a sub-adult jaguar, the tiger will make short work in killing it. To sum it all up, a fugitive sub-adult jaguar might establish its domain in the Sundarbans delta, venture deep inside its jungles, swim in its rivers, and hunt its local fauna, but still, it has to carefully stay well clear of an oncoming tiger, whether male or female – otherwise, it has but death to greet.

If a Lion confronted a Jaguar the way they do leopards, would they have a harder time intimidating or fighting them? Are jaguars big enough to defend themselves from a lion?

I can only answer this factually (as opposed to fantasizing) by using a close approximation… and that would be a tiger against a jaguar. I saw a despicable you tube video of a jaguar and a tiger in the same cage, apparently at a zoo somewhere in South America. This was fairly recent. The reaction of the jaguar, in the same cage as a tiger, was that the jaguar was terrified out of his mind! The tiger (and therefore also the same with a lion) was easily twice the jaguar’s size and weight; probably more. This unfortunate jaguar was literally bouncing off the walls, trying to escape the cage and somehow avoid the tiger, which was mostly just sitting there. The jaguar was in such extreme panic that he actually attacked the tiger several times while flying all over the cage. It was extremely disturbing. What made it even worse was that the disgusting crowd of human tourists was all around the cage, laughing and clapping at their wonderful entertainment. I don’t know how long that jaguar lasted in that cage, or what happened to him, but it really angered me. The jaguar was no fool. He had no doubt in his mind that he would be murdered if he didn’t get away from the beast that was so much bigger than he was. Although this was a tiger and not a lion, I’ve no doubt the results would be the same. Jaguars are not big enough to defend themselves from a lion, no matter their bravery. Size matters when claws are involved. And jaguars, even among their own kind, are not particularly aggressive to each other to the point that they often fight each other. Of course, sometimes it happens, but jaguars prefer to live their lives without major wounds if at all possible, and therefore avoid things that might shorten that life. Even so, yes a jaguar would be much more of a challenge to a lion than a leopard would. But in the end the result would be the same. Jaguar’s strength lies in the fact that they are ferocious and effective hunters… predators. Not in their fighting ability. They’ve no need for that nonsense. Jaguars just want to be left alone. EDIT: It was pointed out that there’s a sign in the video that was in Spanish, therefore I corrected the location as being South America, and not Thailand.

What permanent injuries or disabilities will the victim of the March 2019 Arizona zoo jaguar mauling likely face?

Cat wounds have a very high incidence of infection. In general, if the wound is highly contaminated we might just leave it open to heal on its own without sutures. That could take weeks. But, more likely than not it will be sutured after a thorough cleaning and she will be placed on antibiotics. That will heal in about ten to fourteen days. Now, the psychological scars of climbing over a barrier to take a selfie with your back turned towards a vicious predator that has been caged in a small pen, then getting attacked, that will take years. And, finally, sadly, the intelligence deficit is permanent. Maybe terminal.

What are some unknown facts about the giant river otter?

They are really underrated, not many people know about them and there are few scientific researches too. But they are certainly amazing animals. Never heard of them before? “Hi! Nice to meet you!” The giant otter or giant river otter (,Pteronura brasiliensis,) is a South American carnivorous mammal. It is the longest member of the Mustelidae, or weasel family, a globally successful group of predators, reaching up to 1.7 metres (5.6 ft). Atypical of mustelids, the giant otter is a social species, with family groups typically supporting three to eight members. What are some animals in the zoo that seem cute and harmless but that are actually very dangerous?

Giant river otters Never heard of them? (see also ,Sergio Diniz's answer to What is an organism that is predator and prey to the same animal?,) “Hi! Nice to meet you!” They are cute, no? Sure, they are, but very efficient and “badass” predators, that can even kill a man. It happened in a Zoo as a matter of fact, but before going to that, let’s learn more. Main characteristics: As the name says, ,they are just… giant! The giant otter or giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) is a South American carnivorous mammal. It is the longest member of the Mustelidae, or weasel family, a globally successful group of predators, reaching up to 1.7 metres (5.6 ft). They will kill and eat smaller caymans and anacondas. In group, they can kill (but would not eat) a full grown jaguar (protecting their territory, themselves and their offspring’s), specially inside water (see ,Two Hungry Jaguars Are No Match for This Plucky Otter,). Did I say, ,anacondas,?? If the anaconda size allows, these guys here will make a bite too (see ,Sergio Diniz's answer to What animals prey on anacondas?,): See also ,Sergio Diniz's answer to Besides humans, what are the natural enemies of Anacondas? One clear case where animals can perfectly hunt alone (and do it most of time) but still live in packs. In fact, they are the only mustelid to live in packs. See ,Sergio Diniz's answer to If animals that hunt in packs (like wolves) end up in a place where they can successfully hunt their prey individually, would they still stay in the pack? They can scare off an adult jaguar. How many animals can brag about scaring of a hungry jaguar? Not many. They can easily put a bigger jaguar into the corner while in group. Jaguars, however, will eventually kill and eat them if it is able to surprise one alone or a puppy… on land! Relationship with humans They have been hunted close to extinction by humans. Natives believe they are a nuisance as they interfere in their fishing and fish stocks. However, attacks to humans are rare, but a few cases were reported, including a famous one about 40 years ago, ended in a casualty. A Sergeant went to rescue a 7-year-old boy who fell into a giant otter pen in Brazil. ,Many bites from the otters’ sharp teeth caused his death. photo: Tadashi Nagakomi/CB/D.A Press
