lexus ckd Q&A Review

Are Toyota cars really Japanese if they are manufactured in a U.S. plant and sold in the U.S.?

Yes of course, they are Japanese. Toyota is a Japanese company, wholly owned by Japanese and headquartered in Japan. Key people Takeshi Uchiyamada,(,Chairman,) Shigeru Hayakawa (Vice Chairman) Akio Toyoda, (,President,) Not American names by any stretch of the imagination. What Toyota do is to design and engineer their products in Japan. They then ,export, their product internationally, either complete, knocked down or made completely in-country. In the case of the USA, Toyota have large manufacturing plants throughout the country (Google it) which make just about everything, but to Japanese standards in the same way they are made in the home country. Economies of Scale. Most Japanese - and other car marques - companies do this in the country where they are the most successful, and as Toyota is the largest seller of vehicles in North America, this makes sense. I own a 2008 Nissan truck in Philippines which is “made in Thailand”, only it isn’t. It’s made in Japan and shipped to Thailand to get the interior fitted. Nissan do this because they consider different styles of interior suit different nationalities. For instance, those who buy mid-range cars in Malaysia always want a black interior (which I don’t like, being a Brit), whereas those who buy Jaguar, Mercedes etc tend to prefer lighter interiors. Otherwise that’s about the only thing that changes in the different countries where vehicles are “made” - with or without the inverted commas. The beige interior of my truck is far more “utility” than the interior of my UK brother in law’s 2008 Nissan truck, which has all the gizmos UK buyers want - including the black and silver SS interior which is also in the new trucks in the showrooms here in Philippines today. Usually in UK you have a choice of interiors, whereas here in Philippines you don’t. Toyota Philippines is the largest distributor in this country, but the products are only assembled here, not made. In Malaysia cars may be direct import (Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar etc, - high end vehicles) with other makes being either “CBU” (Completely Built-up Unit) or “CKD” (Completely Knocked Down). The VW is an example of “CKD” - a means to avoid certain import taxes - but when I asked about where they were re-assembled, the showroom said “They come with their wheels separate, otherwise it’s a complete car!” Toyota Malaysia cars are “CBU” in that they are only assembled in country, though the Lexus brand are fully imported in the same way as other luxury car brands (the volume isn’t there to warrant assembling in country, and cars are prohibitively expensive in Malaysia, with high depreciation). Then if we look at the Jaguar luxury brand, these are all designed and made in the UK at the company’s various factories there, so are a totally British bit of kit. But they are owned by the Indian company Tata, who presumably rake off all the profits… Toyota Camry USA, - “mid range car” made in USA Toyota Camry Japan and Malaysia, - “large luxury car” - made in Japan, assembled in Malaysia. Very good seller for Malaysian buyers who can’t afford the eye-watering prices of imported luxury. Even a Mini is more expensive in Malaysia than a Camry. Toyota Camry UK, - “big car” luxury version, with slight changes to grille and probably interior. Spot any similarities amongst these? All designed in Japan. Toyota doesn’t attract much “Corporate Car-park Cred” in UK, with those places predominantly Mercedes and BMW country. This clip below from a UK site shows the difference in the fickle car-buying public worldwide - what’s sauce for the goose is not necessarily sauce for the gander… Except in Philippines where you have what you are given. “The ,Toyota, Camry name is to return to UK dealerships in 2019, it has been revealed. The big saloon will slot into the range next year as Toyota kills off the slow-selling ,Avensis,. (,note UK “big” as opposed to US “mid-range” - Ed,) The Camry badge was last seen in Toyota’s British showrooms 14 years ago - although the model has enjoyed substantial sales growth in other markets since then. Toyota currently sells more than 700,000 Camrys per year.” (AutoExpress) And, back to the point, most definitely a Japanese car maker…

Why didn't General Motors launch the Cadillac brand in India?

CBU or atleast CKD ,either way Cadillac would have been very expensive.See the exorbitant prices at which Toyata is pitching Lexus in India.50k$ cars are costing in crores here in India.Shame on Toyata + Indian tax structure. Even more so General motors don't have service centres to provide quality service for their own cars forget about Cadillac selling well in that scenario. Moreover Cadillac doesn't hold market in India. Here BMW Audi Merc are more sensible choices.Neither we have road infrastructure for long wheelbase low slung cars in India.Only if they had wanted Cadillac to build up their repo but i think even that opportunity is almost gone now.Chevy’s brand image is devasted after announcement of it stopping production in India.Honda might someday launch Acura brand in India because they are serious about their image even if that means losing few hundred crores in project.Chevy cheated Indian share holders with fake investments and that shows how serious they are(were) about Indian market.Sigh!

Why do Japanese car manufacturers use English characters, not Japanese ones? For example, the R-34 Nissan skyline has “Skyline” imprinted on the back, Toyota/Lexus use English alphabet characters for the jzx-100 and Silvia.

The automobile started in Europe and the USA. The first imported vehicle was a Panhard et Levassor M4, in 1898. Up until the beginning of WW2, both Ford and GM had CKD factories in Japan. Parts names were in English, the cars on the road had English or European names until 1904 when we had our first developed/made in Japan car. We probably thought that it was only appropriate to use western words to name our cars. We have a group of people who could be labelled as “Car Graphic (a monthly auto magazine)”people who have a tendency to appreciate European cars. Traditional Oily Boys. We used to describe them as “high share of foreign matters in their blood”. People like Mr. Jiro Shirase is an iconic Oily Boy. His first car was a Paige in 1914. When he was in Europe attending Cambridge, he drove the Bugatti 35 and Bentley 3 liter. His last car was the Porsche 911. Mr. Shirase’s letter to Mr. Okada, Chief Engineer of the first generation Soarer at Toyota, is famous. Japanese manufactures had to convince these guys that their cars were acceptable. They didn’t want to start with their legs being pulled because of some not so western looking emblem.

Who takes the profit of vehicles like Infiniti, Camry and Lexus? I mean they are Japanese brands but designed and built in the USA.

Those brands are all Japanese brands and they are designed and built primarily in Japan. Other manufacturing plants such as Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Australia build for their home markets in Asia Pacific, Nissan has a large plant in Sunderland, UK. This does not mean that the car is actually designed and built in country. For instance, I have a Nissan truck, ostensibly built in Thailand, but actually all the parts of the car are from Japan with only the interior being designed and fitted in Thailand, even though it is known as “Thai Built”. In Malaysia cars are either “CBU” (Completely Built-up Unit) or “CKD” (Completely Knocked Down), though they rarely are. VW for instance is CKD, but the car is supplied from Germany with just the wheels missing! Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW etc are all imported and not “made” in country. Toyota are manufactured in the Philippines near Manila, though I am not sure how much of the car - if any - is actually fabricated there as opposed to assembled. They also have a plant in Malaysia though the Malaysian and Philippines cars differ only in the type of engine and interior (no diesel versions in Malaysia, though most are diesel in Philippines). A Toyota Camry in Malaysia is available top of the range with a 4-cylinder 2.5litre engine, whereas in Philippines a V6 3.5litre is available. The ones built in the US are for the American market, as the Japanese are smart enough to know what each country favours most in their cars. The profits go to the manufacturers themselves. In Japan. I don’t know how much of the car is actually made in USA (see above) but they are certainly not designed in the US. The most popular car ,assembled (,my italics) in the U.S. with the ,required percentage of domestic content, (my bold) is the Toyota Camry for the second year in a row, says ,New Cars, Used Cars, Trucks For Sale, Auto Reviews | Cars.com,. The top five all come from Toyota or Honda. Malaysian Camry - designed in Japan Toyota Camry USA - designed in Japan
