Are you materialistic?
Like many, I try to make as much money as possible and spend the least amount as I can, but RARELY at the expense of comfort. Although, I don’t confuse comfort with overkill. And that means that I tend to go to great lengths to get the best stuff at the cheapest price—which often ends up actually being free. My main computer, for example, was fished out of the local electronics dumpster. That’s not to say that it’s bad in any way, however. After I cleaned it up, wiped the hard drive, and essentially refurbished the laptop, it is now the fastest computer I currently have. How fast, you ask? I can run a DAW, Google Chrome, MS Outlook, UTAU, Discord, and run a system scan all at the same time, and nothing lags. And I got it for free! Out of a fucking dumpster! I’d say it’s worth around $250 today, but I got it for free. My monitor is the same deal. I fished it out of the same electronics dumpster, and even thought the aspect ratio is a perfect square (and it also doesn’t have a logo anywhere that tells me who manufactured it), it has worked quite well up to this point. The resolution isn’t particularly impressive, but I don’t really do anything that really requires high resolution anyway. I’d say it’s worth around $50 today, but I got it for free. The phone that I currently use piggybacks off of my family’s plan that we’ve had since last year, so my parents are paying for it. The plan lasts until Summer of next year, so until then, I can use unlimited calling/text/data for free (on my part, at least). It’s also a pretty high-end phone, so I haven’t the need to switch phones anytime soon. $188 per month. I have it for free. I currently live in an apartment with a roommate, and it was my genius idea to split the rent by how many square footage we claim for ourselves. Since I chose the guest bedroom as my room, as well as the attached bath, I only have to pay about a quarter of the rent—my roommate pays everything else, as he’s the only one who uses the living room, nook, kitchen, master bed/bath. $2,440 per month. I pay $650. Don’t worry, my roommate is totally chill with it. He makes a far better income than I do anyway. I don’t have a mattress; I sleep on foldable tatami mats that sit right atop the wood floors. However, this decision to sleep on tatami mats instead of a mattress was not to save money—it was because I liked it. Average price for a good mattress: around $1500. I use tatami mats for $200. My pillow is probably in the top 10 most expensive things that I’ve ever bought. It’s a $1000 Sleep Number pillow. The issue with most pillows I’ve had is that, after sleeping on it for a while, it molds into a permanent shape that becomes very uncomfortable, and must be replaced. So I figured that buying an expensive high-tech pillow that doesn’t lose its shape, lasts for a lifetime, and comes with benefits like natural thermal management, was a much better investment than having to buy a new cheap pillow every few months. Even though its initial price was around $1000, I bought it during a Christmas sale, which bumped it down to around $900, and since I was a new customer, they discounted further down to $850. Through some negotiation with the saleswoman, I only had to pay around $810. I’ve got one blanket and a duvet, both of which are silk. I didn’t buy any of them—they were gifts from a family-owned bedding shop in Taiwan that had very good ties with my grandparents. They’re extremely high quality, and I’ve been told that they would normally be worth several thousand USD. Initial price: $1500+ EACH. I got them for free. My daily driver is a used 2010 Lexus RX, which I got for just a hair under $13,000 because its previous owner was our neighbour when I still lived with my parents. And even though it’s not terribly quick, sporty, or high-tech by today’s standards, it’s still a damn good car. Most of the leather has been preserved because its previous owners used cloth seat covers, and it’s quite comfy. Even though it hasn’t got the Mark Levinson sound system upgrades, it is still better than any audio device I currently own. The car hasn’t needed a single repair every since it was bought, which is nice. Average price today: around $18,000. Saved $5,000. As for most other necessities, I purchase them from MUJI. It’s got unique and high quality items at a more-than-reasonable price. Of course, I could solve most of these problems by landing a job that pays A LOT more than what I currently make, that would demand more of me, but it would infringe on my comfort. Right now, my comfort levels are at the perfect level for me. Nothing major is being compromised, and I’m definitely not going overboard with unnecessary comfort. So, am I materialistic? I’d say I’m in the middle, but probably not “in the middle” in the same way as most others who are also in the middle.
