mitsubishi galant vr4 Q&A Review

Do you love driving your car or is it just another appliance to you?

I love driving and owning cars and trucks. I’ve loved anything with wheels and an engine since I was 5 years old. It’s been a goal of mine since I was a teenager to have cool cars. When I was in college I worked full time just to afford modifications for my car. Everyone else was worried about gas money, I was buying custom wheels. I’ve had sports cars, luxury cars, 4x4 trucks, even some rare limited production cars like the Mitsubishi Galant VR4. Cars are just big toys for me and my life would be much less fun without them!

What old car makes are worth restoring?

All of the previous answers are very good so I'll just make a small list: Alfa Romeo 164 V6 Audi 200 (C3) - a more luxurious version of the 100 Audi 80 Coupe BMW E30 Citroen CX (especially the Prestige and GTI) Ford Sierra XR4i and (especially!) Cosworth Honda Prelude Jaguars (basically all of them) Lancia Delta Integrale Lancia Thema 8.32 Mercedes W126 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 Peugeot 205 GTI Renault 5 Turbo Saab 900 (especially the Turbo) Subaru XT Toyota Supra VW Scirocco Volvo 240 Volvo 760 ...these are just some that come to mind. I included specific versions if they're likely to fetch better money then the rest of the range.

How did you decide what vehicle to get when your engine blew?

I've only had one engine blow among my dozens of vehicles, but I didn't replace the car. I just put a new engine in it! The car was a rare 1991 Mitsubishi Galant vr4, one of 3000 sold in the US. I loved it. So I just found a Japanese take out engine and dropped it in. Cheap and easy and I got to keep one of my favorite cars ever, for a few more years.

What 'modern' cars (from 1990+) are most likely to appreciate in value and become classics?

S13-S14 and S15 S chassis cars hello drift tax? Nissan skylines especially the coupe models especially when they hit the 25+year mark Toyota Supra already there in some cases unless the upcoming one is a huge success. But its gotten to the point where it can’t go any higher (except inflation) Honda Civic EG and EK (cult classic) Lexus LS400 (first proper Japanese high end luxury car) Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Mitsubishi Galant VR4 (ok this one im not sure about, it really depends) Subaru WRX.

What are some cars that are cult classics?

Anything that has a decent group of loyal followers that love them. In my opinion here are a few future/present cult classics. Datsun/Nissan Z car Old school Toyota Corollas. 8th Gen Mitsubishi Galant/ Legnum VR4’s British sports cars. Ford Mustang. Chevrolet Corvette. Old Holdens. Ford Falcon (more of an Australian thing) Nissan Silvia /180/200/240sx. Honda Civic (yeah there are actual genuine Honda guys out there) Ford F series trucks. Tri 5 Chevrolets Chevrolet Camaro. Toyota Supra Nissan Skyline. Mitsubishi Evolution/ Subaru WRX.

If you could choose a car from each car company, which cars would you choose?

There is a huge number of manufacturers producing a myriad of cars. So its difficult even to choose one from all. Anyways, I've tried choosing a few: ASTON MARTIN: V12 Vantage S AUDI: TT RS ALFA ROMEO: Brera Spider BENTLEY: Continental Supersports BMW: 2002ti CADILLAC: CTS-V Coupe DODGE: 1970 Challenger. R/T FERRARI: 512 Testarossa FIAT: Tipo FORD: Sierra RS Cosworth JAGUAR: Mark II LANCIA: Delta Integrale HF EVO2 KOENIGSEGG: CCX (in Lapiz Lazuli) LAND ROVER: Range Rover Sport SVR LAMBORGHINI: Murcielago SV/Diablo VT MERC: SL65 AMG Black Series, G63 6X6 MG: MGC Super Sebring MITSUBISHI: Galant VR4 AMG NISSAN: Silvia S15 OPEL: Speedster Turbo PORSCHE: 911 Carrera RS2.7 RENULT: 205 Rallye ROLLS ROYCE: Wraith SKODA: Prev. Gen Octavia vRS SUBARU: Impreza 22B WRX STI TVR: Tuscan VOLVO: 850R

What car do you regret selling?

There are numerous cars I regret selling that I’ve owned in my life. I’d say the one that stands out the most is the 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 that I built from a shell sitting in a field. If you don’t know what that is, Mitsubishi imported 3000 VR4 models over 2 years. 2000 in 1991 and 1000 in 1992. That’s it. 3000 cars for the entire US. To say they are rare is an understatement and I was lucky enough to own one! They were AWD, All wheel steering, turbocharged sport sedans. It was Mitsubishi’s way of saying, “sorry your safety standards won’t let you have our EVO, but here’s a Galant with the same engine and drivetrain”. This one isn’t mine because back when I had mine, we didn’t have digital cameras so any pictures I had of it are long gone. I restored this car after sitting for several years in a field. The timing belt had broken, thus destroying the engine. I towed it home and over the next couple years made it a wonderful driving little car. I upgraded everything. Fuel system, intercooler, turbo charger, full exhaust, intake system, camshafts, rebuilt engine, stronger clutch, lighter flywheel, full suspension, wheels and tires, stereo, etc. The interior was in great shape actually so after some cleaning, it looked great. I would race V8 powered cars and embarrass them since they thought my Galant was just a standard Galant. Nobody knew about the Vr4! With the AWD, I was already across the intersection before they finished spinning their tires. AFter a few short years of owning this car, I got some stupid idea about wanting another type of car so I sold it online and bought something else. To this day I regret selling that car.

You have endless money but you can only buy classic cars (before 1995). What would you buy?

Oh, let’s see here, there were quite a few pretty bad ass vehicles before 95. I’m not into the old classic cars much but I’d buy some restomods, like a 68 Camaro with a modern drivetrain. Forget carburetors, fuel injection is where it’s at. Let’s do a Toyota FJ40 restomod too. How about a tow rig for the toys above? A 72 F250 with a built and bulletproofed 6.0 powerstroke turbo diesel should work. That takes care of the 60s and 70s, and let’s forget the 80s, nothing there interests me much. But the 90s…oh yeah. Let’s start with a 91/92 Mitsubishi Galant VR4. I actually had one of these and wish I still did. AWD, AWS, turbo charged 2.0L. Bolt on mods and some cams and it’ll be 400HP all day long. Can’t forget the Dodge Stealth/Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. SAme recipe as the Galant but larger and decidedly not unassuming. Came stock with 320HP, twin turbo 3.0L V6. I actually had 2 of these over the years, one with upgraded turbos, fuel system, exhaust, intercooler, etc. Awesome fun car. And while we’re talking about Japanese supercars, let’s do a 1995 Toyota Supra turbo. No OBDII nonsense but all the goodness of a turbocharged inline 6 and RWD. Let’s throw in some more turbocharged coolness with a 92 GMC Typhoon. AGain, more AWD turbocharged fury here. Powered by a 4.3L turbocharged V6, it would show even supercars back then its taillights. Are you sensing a theme yet? That’s enough for now, go ahead and send me that check please.

What's an unusual car you would love to own?

Mitsubishi galant (sedan) or Legnum (wagon) vr4 (performance model) low mileage and in good condition. >>>> Very rare in my country.

Buying a new car. Which is nicest out of these options?

Not to burst your bubble, but actually owning and daily driving any of those vehicles will be a pain in your ass. Even if you're filthy rich and can do everything regarding repairs and maintenance, you'll still hate driving them every day. Something like that would be nice as a spare weekend car for fun bu tnot to drive every day to work, in the rain, snow, 100 degree temps, etc. Just finding parts will be next to impossible. I love older cars but when I say older, I think from teh 90's. They have great performance, reliability and are generally cheap and easy to work on. things like the Acura NSX, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, Galant VR4, Mitsubishi Eclipse AWD turbo, Chevy Camaro LS1, Lexus LS400 or GS400, from the late 90s, etc. Minimal computer invasiveness, yet just enough to actually make them reliable and efficient.
